Only 2 miles from the club site at Garlieston – but stay here instead.

Previous contributors have got it right. It's a pearl! Judith is a good host and helped us solve a couple of problems that arose. Typical Yorkshire hospitality! The views are outstanding and we were blessed with lovely weather (mostly) for our 6-day stay in September 2016. Access is via fairly wide lanes with little traffic; the swing into and out of the site is straight forward (we have a 13m rig). Once on site, the breeze can be a bit brisk and a conventional awning (we left ours at home) would have been a bit tricky to put up or take down. The facilities are first rate: 5 or 6 flagstones around the tap (no mud) and the enclosed concrete area with bins and toilet sluice are also mud-free. It is necessary to lift your grey water container about 350mm to empty it – so if you use a 45 or 50 litre waste-away/waste-master… don’t let it get too full if you cannot lift 45kg. The field (its more of a garden) is gently sloping and would require levelling kit in some corners – we managed without. The DAB signal was a bit patchy on some channels – but Radio 4 and 5 came through clearly. We didn’t try the TV signal… with views like these, why would you want to? The 3 phone network was pretty poor (but it always is away from main roads and big cities), the O2 signal was good for SMS and ’phonecalls… data was ponderous but worked eventually for email and ‘low demand’ items. We are “softy” cyclists and the nearby coasts are generally level; the Forestry Commission “ride” at Kilsture is gentle and relatively mud-free but with a real wilderness feel to it! While in the area you should pop down to Garlieston (pretty sea-side village) and look at the more conventional caravanners crammed on to the club site, paying loads more than you and having to smell each-other’s bacon and listen to each-others TV sets. Chacun à son goût. Wigtown is a little gem (20 minutes north by car) and the book festival is a peach. While we were here we enjoyed beach-combing, “beltie” spotting and we saw a red squirrel… wow! We’ll be back!
