Perfect

Myself and my wife have stayed here several times over the years and also at various times of the year. As usual, a warm welcome from Catherine and the site immaculate as usual despite the awful rainy weather in previous weeks. Park and Ride just around the corner and If you prefer a 30 minute walk into York and the Wall. We hope to have many more enjoyable stays in the future. Well done Catherine and see you again soon. Paul and Alison Thatcher.

Convenient site

Convenient site for visiting York with hard-standings. We chose it instead of Beachwood Grange because of walking the dog on & off site. Walked into York following footpath just outside site in about 35 minutes and can walk other way to nearby retail park in 5-10 minutes. There are several supermarkets there too. We visited York for the Xmas markets. Was charged for dog which I complained about as there was no mention on website or in book at that time, though I have since noted website has been updated. We asked what the dog charge was for as no dog walk on site as can't walk on grass as all fenced off! Bit pricey when you add up extra charges for awning etc. Nice to have a shower (20p / £1 meter) & toilet provided but no heating so didn't use as was very cold at time of visit. There is no drive over waste disposal or dog walk from site - only the footpath next to the ring road. Some road noise, but to be expected from proximity to ring road.

Fab site

Lovely site which has all you need for the perfect stay. Not to far to walk into York but if you prefer, Park and ride just a couple of mins away. Catherine the site owner is a lovely person and always has a warm welcome for you. Stayed here quite a few times now since 2015 and will certainly be visiting again. 5 stars for certain

Not maximising the potential of the site

This is a lovely site, convenient for visiting York but: When you drive in the first thing you see is a "Keep off the grass" sign and the grass area fenced off with rope. Not very welcoming. The price is £25 + £2 for a porch awing (What cost is involved in an awning?) It is nice to have the toilet and shower, although they were a bit tired, but 20 pence for 3 minutes is expensive when paying £25. 3 minutes is a very short shower. My husband ran out of time and put in another 20p which didn't work so had to put in another 20p. There was no information provided re the bins/recycling etc. A box and 1 bin provided but no information about what to put where. Not acceptable in these times of recycling. It would have been advantageous to have some information about the area. eg. how to get to the park and ride, other places of interest etc. The toilet emptying point is totally unacceptable - no flush, just a slow running hose which was not strong enough to wash away solids. This site has the potential to be excellent if a bit more effort and interest is applied by the owner.

Excellent city site

A fabulous site for visiting York. all hardstanding, with easy access off the Main Malton Road and a prompt friendly welcome. The site is spacious with 6 pitches and plenty of space for dogs or children. Facilities include a easy access grey waste water drain and Drinking water Point with a separate Black water disposal point. There is a Single utilities room with Toilet Hand basin & Shower, All are basic but tidy. The site is just in the next field to the larger Monks Cross Park and ride bus terminus and car Park, with the journey taking just 15 to 20 mins into town, no need to drive to the car park it is a 5 min walk less than 1/4 of a mile. The monks cross site itself is a large Retail park with all shops you would need for a days retail therapy. Plus all of the Main Chain eateries of fast food , Pizza , coffee Etc Even tough the location is close to the Retail Park we had no issues with traffic noise. Dog walking is limited but just across the road approx 2 mins walk is a large Victorian Enclosed common and park with more than ample space for the biggest of dogs. There are no pubs locally but we would recommend the Walnut tree, just 1 mile away, 5 mins by car or 25 mins walk along the cycle route

Slightly underwhelmed!

We have just returned from a pleasant trip to York enjoying all the tourist haunts and also an International Rugby World Cup game at the stadium 10 minutes away from the site. We chose this site as it was quoted as £21 per night when booking was made, walking distance to the park and ride and retail parks. No need to pay the 'big site' prices and drag the motorhome through the city. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and told the prices had increased to £25 per night. Good job I had a little extra in my purse to cover the difference. The site is accessed easily from the main road but down a poorly maintained shared driveway so a bit bumpy and mucky, caveat to that, Autumn is a mucky time of year. There is a gate to open beyond the small industrial unit that is always closed and the road surface slightly improves once on site land. The pitches were hardstanding, not quite level and needed a tidy but caveat, Autumn!! There was no view from any pitch due to very high hedging. The elsan point was only just adequate in the fact that it was there. It was grotty, very unhygienic and smelly. The washroom lacked any ambience. It was cold with no where to put anything if you wanted to use the 20p for 2 minutes shower and would be greatly improved by a lick of paint and pipes being covered and more professional signage regarding general usage. We also didn't find the advertised drive over waste water drain. This site provides however a welcome host who was very friendly and very easy access into the city and surrounding areas. If we return to the beautiful city of York, we would stay at Chowdene again as it's a great base and being in a motorhome, apart from the elsan point, we are happy to use our own facilities.

Easy access to York

We stayed for one night in September. Nice flat pitches, good amenities, shower & toilet clean. Lovely welcome. Very close to one of the park and ride locations into York, 10 mins walk, although as we stayed only one night, we needed to park our van at the park and ride rather than walk to it. There is a height limit at the nearest P&R so we went to the next one round which has a specific campervan parking area. Only drawback to this site is the noise level from the ring road, which we found quite significant and seemed to continue through the night. We did have our pop top up so perhaps in a motorhome or caravan the noise level would not be an issue.

Could have been better

On looking at the photos of the site it seems to suggest that it’s not just hard standing but may have a choice as some of the photos have vans on grass. I must say it did feel like we were allowed on our hard standing pitch and no where else as all the field had high stakes with a rope cording all the field, the small field as you enter says ‘keep off the grass’ . It was also a bit of a challenge reversing onto your pitch without touching the fencing rope and stakes. We had a dog with us and the only walk we found ( we were on site for three nights) was around the retail park. I did ask the owner if she could advise us on a local country pub that served Sunday lunch, the only suggestion was a large chain pub and didn’t seem to know any pubs locally. I did find the site some what expensive, we were even charged for a porch awning, at £22.00 per night just for the pitch I would have thought that the showers would be free, not that we needed them. All in all an ok experience but please open the field for usage. A bin for dog poo would be good.

Excellent location and site

Lovely welcome from Catherine who met us as we arrived. Site easy to find and well laid out and maintained with allocated hard standing pitches and EHU. Facilities within easy reach from each of the pitches. Shower for 20p very reasonable; £1 plenty of time to wash hair and shower with no rushing and time to spare. Grey water waste point from motorhome is on the way down the lane if you need it (via pipe not drive over). Plenty of personal space around pitches and not encroaching on each other. Very peaceful and calm site. Superb location for easy access into York either by using Park & Ride (Monk’s Cross 10mins) or walking (30mins). Clearly marked flat walking/cycling paths. Monk’s Cross has everything you need including supermarkets and petrol if you need to stock up at any point. York is a fantastic city and easily accessible from this site. Would definitely use this site again.

Lovely CL site

We loved this CL which is perfectly situated away from the main road in an enclosed paddock which is a haven for wildlife, Deer, Fox, Birds (and the odd Mole). Hardstanding pitches with EHU, Sunshine all day (when it is out). Nice 35min (for us) walk into York, busses available en-route. Park and ride 10mins away as is the shopping (Monks Cross). Friendly greeting on arrival. Good facilities for, water fill, water drain, toilet and chemical toilet empty. We used our caravan shower so no comment on the site shower other than it looks just fine. We were there in October and the weather was good which meant we could sit out in the nice surroundings. Plenty of space between pitches and plenty of space if you want to do outdoor activities. Will be returning for sure.
