No Hook Up? No Problem!

The Thorpe’s run a lovely site and they have a warm, but not intrusive, welcome. The site is well maintained and tidy. It slopes gently and we needed to ramp one side of the ‘van to get it level; there are spots on the site that are flat. The water supply is accessible with taps at sensible heights. The toilet disposal is a bit primitive and the lid to the grate is a bit heavy. We chose the site because we never use hook-up… but (if you really must have electricity) there are a couple of pitches that have access to the mains… check before arriving! “Steady as you go” through the gate; it isn’t that narrow but the gate posts are imposing columns of millstone grit and would be less forgiving than timber. The 4g phone signal on the 3 network was spot on and the O2 signal was good for calls and texts; data was very slow. The DAB signal was patchy.. radio 4 was OK but radio 3 was weak. I don't have a TV. I was here because I had to spend a few days in the Peak District while my wife was otherwise engaged. Being a “softy” cyclist I decided to test Derbyshire’s reputation for good cycling. Its brilliant! Tow paths have survived the derelict canals and the redundant rail network has been utilised as leisure trails. I was blessed with wonderful weather for mid-October and cycled for miles and miles without ever seeing a road. Good value for £8, lots to do locally, beautiful scenery – nearly as beautiful as Yorkshire. The Thorpes keep a couple of the prettiest horses I have ever seen - very playful. Forget the hook up! 100 amp battery, 20 watt PV panel, 5 days, £8 quid a night. No problem!
