Ease of arrival/welcome

Spoiled holiday - beware what you get told about where you can pitch!

When we booked this site by phone, one of the comments made by the owner was "People like to set up on the bank to watch the canal boats." When we arrived we found a long bank, recently mown so we pitched up at the far end, delighted with the situation. A lady turned up after a couple of days and very pleasantly told us we were pitched in the wrong place. We queried this because of the information we'd been given and she told us we could stay. Later the same day two gentlement turned up in a large 4x4 and told us to move. I do admit they were courteous in their request but nevertheless we felt upset. We moved back along the bank, near to the pillbox, as the men had indicated this would be okay. As we were leaving the campsite early one evening, I was opening the gate to let the car out and was accosted by a man with a dog who made some remark about everyone was commenting that we'd been incorrectly sited. At that point I became rather cross and told this person (who I wondered might be the owner) that some signage might be helpful to prevent this happening again and furthermore, the owner should perhaps not be quite so gung-ho when talking to potential customers about being able to pitch up on the bank. There were some people nearby who also had to move. On the far side of the canal were several illegally moored and rather dubious looking canal boats. We rarely lock our caravan but we did so while on this site. It also seems to be a dog walk for most of the village and no, they weren't on the footpath but wandering about all over the site field. Yes, you can access the Downs, Caen Locks, Avebury, Bath and Stonehenge. There was a pub in the village and another along the canal a short way, and shops in Devizes (Sainsbury's and Morrisons) But we shan't be going back. I hope a later review will tell us if some sort of sign has been put up to prevent other caravanners/motorhome owners not having their holiday spoiled as we did.
