Rural quiet site

This CL was £20 pn. The site is opposite a nice local pub serving food on some nights. EHU, wate Bins, water, elsan and grey water disposal available. Weak phone signal (no Sky mobile, limited O2 signal). TV signal was OK. Very rural area and narrow approach roads. The road was quiet overnight. The site was overgrown and felt unloved. I messaged the owner when we were pitched up and he came and collected the fees. We were visited by a baby deer in the morning.

TV Wifi Update

I don’t usually leave reviews but need to correct previous reviews. The TV signal is excellent! Writing this using the 3g signal on my phone (Sky) Use your phone direction North for best signal

Idyllic, peaceful location on the longest 'B' road in the country!

What a find. I couldn't have wished for a more tranquil and well kept site with all the basic facilities so handy and a good value food and real ale pub just steps across the road. The site is at the far west end of the B6318 in Cumbria - just a few miles from the Scottish border where it terminates a few miles further on. The other end is at Heddon-on-the-Wall, the drive to which, from the site, runs the length of Hadrian's Wall in an almost straight line - a trip I'd certainly recommend making whilst in the area. The site itself is well maintained with the grass neatly cut with tubs of flowers at each pitch by the EHU points. The pitches are all fairly level and are hardstanding which is great since the site is open all year round. The water and other facilities are just a few metres away from the pitches. I had no problem getting reception for the Three wifi unit although our van has an external aerial on the roof which obviously helps - around 3MBs up and down so Netflix streamed nicely once we returned from the pub and wifi calling worked just fine. First night we were there Maddy Prior (All Around My Hat) was dining in the restaurant - apparrently she lives locally and runs workshops from her home. I couldn't find many marked footpaths nearby however it's a short drive to many local attractions where there are plenty. Carlisle itself is very close and we spent a day over at Shilloth on the coast which is worth visiting and Beckfoot beach just to the South where it is easy to park a motorhome right in the dunes for free. Slightly further South is Allenby again on the coast which also looked unspoilt and very traditional. Parking for motorhomes is good at Talkin Tarn near Brampton and there's a nice circular walk from the CP to Brampton via the station and the former 'Dandy Line' to the town. All-in-all at the very top of our sites visited this year - of which there have been many.

Tricky to find

I will concur with the previous reviews. No TV signal, no mobile phone, unless you go back up the road. Now for those of you trying to get there, ignore the map or any other details. Post code & Long/Lat are miles out. They take you to a farm track opposite 3 bungalows. Correct NGR is NY519720 55 2'27" N 2 45'12"W. The signs are only visible when approaching from the pub side. It's a nice level site with hardstanding. Bins needed emptying (ok I know its harvest time). Generally unloved. No information about anything on site. We had to leave a note saying we'd phone to arrange payment when we got home. But for £11 we wern't complaining.

Yes and no...

This was such a pity. Good location in rolling, isolated countryside, with a lovely country pub opposite. The problem was we got the impression the owner was not that interested, the grass had not been cut for some time, nor had the bins been emptied, or the gravel pitches weeded. The whole site had an unloved feel to it. We even had to ask the pub landlord where the owner lived, so we could go to his house and pay him. The landlord also told us the owner had asked him if he wanted to take over the running of the site, and we got the impression the owner was happy to take the money (£15 a night, not cheap for what it was) yet do little else. The other problem was there was virtually no phone signal, which made connection to the internet almost impossible. For a couple of nights maybe not a problem, but we were there a week and quite honestly were not sad to leave. Had it not been for the pub opposite we would have felt totally isolated. So Crossings Inn highly recommended, Crossings CL less so.

Perfect Base for Touring An Ignored Area in The Borders (Scotland/England)

Not much to add to the previous reviewer except that we probably were happier as it suited as down to the ground. We also arrived in rain and were thankful for the hard standing as the grassy areas were quite soft due to this summers rainfall. We enjoyed the nearby pub every day but you need to know food is available only Fri-Sun. Very good for the prices charged. The site had all we needed which was water, waste disposal and hook-up electricity. It is an agricultural, animal rearing area and we enjoyed our vista of green fields and calves antics within. We were there to research the family tree so visited many small cottages and small townships with attached churches. We went down to Hadrians Wall and Lanercost Priory which were busyier but otherwise we seemed to be the only tourists around the site. The owner and evertybody else we met were very friendy once they realised you were not a potential sheep rustler. We would look suspicious as we took an interest in houses and photographed them. There are quite a few paths signposted but due to underuse they are mostly now difficult/impossible to follow without GPS/OS maps. In wet weather we would advise not to bother even trying. In summary we search out quiet places far from the madding crowd and this was ideal. We will return.

Weekend stay in rain

We arrived on site to a chorus of thunder and lightening and heavy rain! No-one about or other caravans on site pitches a bit boggy although hard standing lots of moss which soaked up water so it was like walking on a sponge. Decided to walk to Crossings Pub which is just opposite site thinking they were owner, found out they were not. Did have a nice chat and pint and discovered they sold meals and also did carry-outs. Food was pleasant pub grub, particularly goodd meaty cumberland sausage. Site owner turned up later that evening for collection of fees and was very pleasant. Facilities clean but tired, rather faded signs on site, pretty display of annuals. Nearby attractions of local abbey which had a particular nice tea room and Birdoswald fort part of Hadrians wall. Enjoyed peace and tranquilty OK for a weekend better when ground dries up. Perhaps another layer of gravel plus moss killer would help!
