Good or Not so good?

Recently stayed at this site and the jury is still out on this one. Glad we read all the reviews before we arrived. Worth doing. It certainly helped not to get wrong with the owner and to make one aware of " the rules". The location is very good for the New Forest and the site is kept very well. The pub opposite is excellent. Local ales and superb food. The site is next to a very busy and noisey road. And I mean busy. Not too bad this time of year as not sitting outside but during the nice weather would not be good. Cars can't be parked next to vans. Not to our liking especially when wet. Showers were clean but did not work well. Scolding or cold. Electric showers with low water pressure not good. Would we go back? The pub yes. The Cl no not for us although there are many sites around not as good.

Countryside Gem

This was a last minute booking we made on the way to the new forest, and we are so glad we did. The site was lovely well positioned for the New Forest (and a pub across the road!) the toilets and showers were clean and all of the site well maintained - would definitely visit again for the New Forest!

A great site!

We have just returned from a lovely weekend in this great value CL. Mr Harnett is friendly and welcoming, and has a sound knowledge of the area. It is an exceptionally well kept site - the pitches are rotated and mown so that the grass stays in great condition; the hedges surrounding it are well groomed too. It is square in shape, and the cars are parked at one end, giving the site a roomy 'garden' feel. Spotless facilities - separate M and F shower/toilet , and an extra toilet. Great location too - Lymington, Keyhaven, Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst, Bournemouth all in easy reach. Added bonus - it is opposite a lovely pub - The Plough. No problems at all with the entrance. We are regular visitors to the New Forest area, and will certainly return here.

A very restful 2 weeks

I have stayed at this CL 4 times. The entrance is Very tight. I always pull across to the opposite side of the road to give myself the maximum room to pull in straight. The gate posts are very large and will make a mess of any caravan.  The site is very clean and tidy, the grass is watered and cut weekly. Mr Harnett rotates the position of the vans to give the grass time to recover. There is some noise from the road during the rush hour morning and night. The local farm food shop is excellent quality and price, this is the one with the very busy car park not the one very close to the site. The motor cycle museum has a very good cafe with cream tea that can`t be beet. Lots of other things to do and see.

A Slightly Different Perspective

Further to the other reviews I would concur that the entrance to this site is tight, although it was more the fact that it is straight upon you as you turn in from the road providing little opportunity to plan your approach that caused me a problem when I visited and left me grateful for the mover I have fitted on my 7.2m (circa 24ft) van. The other reviews paint the owner as a little overbearing, as a 36 year old 'whipper snapper' I think he is just old, as I suspect from their use of feet are they, and likes things done his way. If you also like to do things your way, then clearly that maybe a problem. Personally I was happy for the owner to tell me where he wanted us and help me level the van with some wooden blocks. I was also very grateful when I found that my electricity cable for the hookup was not working that he was willing to take the time to help and ultimately able to provide me with a spare from his garage. I also found when I talked to him that he was knowledgeable about the local area and able to provide suggestions for trips with the kids. There is a toilet and shower block on site, which for me is a bonus; at 6'2 and 16st, showering in the caravan is not a great experience. As for emptying the chemical loo down a manhole cover that seems to be an approach taken by many CL sites and I have certainly encountered worse arrangements on a CL site. Also, given there are two toilets within a minuets walk of anywhere on the site, you should not have to be emptying the chemical loo too often. Yes the site is next to a busyish (for the New Forest) road and there is some road noise, but I did not find this to be too much of a problem. I was able to park my car right next to my caravan when I stayed, but most cars were parked at the end of the site next to the road; perhaps a slightly quirky requirement, but the 25m / 30m walk this entails is hardly a massive inconvenience. The site was clean and well maintained and if the views were not inspiring because of the hedges (helping cut out some of the road noise), well just outside is the whole of the New Forest :-) All in all I would agree with ganda162's conclusion "not one of the best, but I suppose not one of the worst", I should note for completeness that I am at the disadvantage of not having stayed at other CL's in the New Forest.

Ease of arrival/welcome

Danewood, not peaceful at all.

Strange little CL. Site entrance was very tight, shipping length of our caravan is 22 feet, and did have to be careful. On arrival you are ordered where you are to put your caravan, no deviation. We wanted to site it length ways, but no the grass needs to recover. Where he wanted us to pitch was very uneven, even our leveling blocks were insufficient to rectify it. It was at this point we suggested pitching it parallel to the hedge. His answer was to come back with some off cuts of wood to raise one side of the van even higher. (He actually telephoned us some months after accusing us of pinching his bits of wood!) So now the awning did not fit properly because the van was so high off the ground on the nearside. The chemical disposal was lifting a manhole cover and just plopping it down there. There was many times disgusting things floated by from people using the loos! Site was very noisy, right next to a main road. Oh and you can't park your car next to your caravan, goodness knows why? I can only presume it's because your driving over the grass! There was no view at all, apart from hedges, from the caravan. I think that sums it up, not one of the best, but I suppose not one of the worst.

CL next to a busy road

I have visited quite a few CL sites but never have i met such an overbearing owner before. Cant park your car next to the caravan Must put your water tubs on some bits of wood so they dont damage the grass. Owner was a bit over the top but was very well meaning and polite chap. The showers are clean, views are poor as its surrounded on all sides by tall conifers. Dog walk was nice to have though. Do be careful when entering and leavig with your caravan, I tow a 27ft twin axle and got in and out but whilst i was there 2 other vans got damaged due to the tight turn. Very noisey from 0700 due to busy road.

access

The access and welcome were both poor, after having arrived at the time that I told the owner, there was no one to meet us, therefore we pitch our caravan.Only to be told 1 1/2 hours later that we were pitched in the wrong place. Not the welcome you expect. The reason being that the grass had to have time to recover. New Forest grass must have miracle powers of recovery as the next morning he put someone else on that same. If you do decide to go there make sure that you have a motor mover on your caravan if it is of more than average length. Our van is 21ft long and as the acess is so tight we managed to hit the "hedge" which actually is hiding a wooden post. One damaged awning rail, one expensive repair. The owner seemed to think it was run of the mill. We used the mover when we left his site.
