Doningto Park and Calke Abbey visits

We tried to book four nights on the CL to attend a show at Donington Park but the CL area was full and we were offered a pitch on the adjacent commercial area at £11 p.n. exclusive of electricity which is charged for by card meter. This we accepted not knowing really what to expect especially as the site is part of a small rural industrial area. Don’t let this put you off because the site is a gem and if the industrial area is used you wouldn’t know it. The site is divided into three areas, the CL, a 25 pitch low facilities commercial site and a rally field. Each area, while being adjacent, are separated by open wood fencing. The commercial area is accessed via a gravel track and 10 of the 25 pitches are hard standings, some of which are used as seasonal pitches. There are fine views from almost anywhere on this hill top site which overlooks the Staunton Harold reservoir beyond which, in the distance can be seen Breeden Hill on top of which the silhouette of church breaks the skyline. There is good access to dog walking and it is an easy walk through a field down to the reservoir’s visitor centre, but sadly the café was not open on the occasions we visited after some very enjoyable walks in the adjacent scenic countryside. Nearby is Calke Abbey and its estate which is well worth a days visit. The nearby town of Melbourne with its narrow streets lies is a short distance away and has full facilities but was not particularly inspiring. The only thing marring what is otherwise and excellent site, is it lies in the flight path of the East Midlands airport and there is some aircraft noise which may disturb light sleepers or those looking for absolute peace and quiet.
