Xmas 2023.

My wife and I decided to do something different this year and went to this CL site. We have been before and found it ticked a lot of our boxes. Communications with Mark and John where spot on, gave us accurate information we required. Booking is pretty straight forward using their webpage. We did pick our pitch from the site plan you can see on the website, but unfortunately when we arrived someone had already pitched up on our designated pitch. No staff were on site, which we were aware of, but a quick call to John sorted that out and we could use either of the two remaining pitches. The approach road, Green Lane, is narrow in places, but there is a few areas for passing, but we never needed them as the road is fairly short. Pitches are hardstanding but you have to be aware of the small grass areas as they do get muddy and bogged down a bit. We had a bit of rain on the last day. We thought we may struggle getting off but nothing to worry about there. Motorhome, 7.4m long and 3.5t. We were given a code to a key box to get a fob for using the buildings showers and toilets. These are like been back in senior school. Communal areas, but shower curtains and private changing areas if you need them. We used them everyday while we were there. Not a problem at all. We like the area for the walks. Wide hard standing footpaths so ideal for bikes, pushchairs and wheelchairs. Easy access into Durham from the site. 16amp hook up with RCD resets but didn’t have any problems at all. The WiFi has a very good signal. All this for £20 a night is a steal compared to some CLs we have been to, charging a lot more. Thanks again to John and Mark. See you again no doubt.

A patch of grass next to a car park

Whilst it could have been idyllic, staying at Durham Amateur Rowing Club CL was far from ideal. Noise from a function being held at the clubhouse went on until way after midnight on Saturday night. Noise from rowers setting up boats starts before 8am each morning, with some male members' gratuitous bad language being far from appropriate. Local youths came prowling round looking to steal high value bicycles leaving us wary of security. On a plus side, very close locality to Durham made visits into a lovely city very much easier, but local food shops are a little bit of a drive away. All in all, not the relaxing tranquil stay we had hoped for.

Close to Durham

Site on edge of car park but after initial early morning rowers, the site was quiet and only a few dog walkers having coffee and cake. At 5 pm ish it got busy again with rowers until late evening and then it went very quiet. We were given a fob to access for the toilets and showers. The showers had plenty of hot water and had both individual shower cubicles and individual changing areas. Whilst we were there no one used the shower at the same time as us. It was great watching the rowers on the river whilst walking into Durham which is a pleasant walk. Durham is a lovely city to visit. There is a medium size Tesco in the market square so we didn't take the car out at all. Nice dog walk both on the river bank and the wood close by.

A wonderful base from which to explore Durham

A perfect location from which to explore Durham situated on river walks in all directions. It’s about a 15 minute walk to the centre and 20 minutes in the opposite direction to visit the wonderful botanical gardens. On arrival it was a little difficult to access the club to book in but a friendly rower helped us. We were given a tour of the facilities and given a fob which gave us 24 hour access to the toilets and showers which were clean, plenty of hot water with communal changing rooms. Site was mostly quiet with wonderful birdsong in the morning. Could hear student party on Friday night but all quiet by 11.30pm. It was lovely to chat to students, watch them row and remind us of our student days. We would use again.

Lovely Stay

Spent 3 nights at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club site. Arrival Friday and the bar was open. Easy check in with a friendly tour of the facilities. Lovely riverside location. Easy access to water and hook up point. Used shower facilities and whilst the club was busy in the mornings I had the shower room to myself. Great to watch the rowers prepare the boats in the morning and practicing on the river. Even had the fire service on Sunday morning practicing their rescue techniques. 15 min walk into beautiful Durham and great walks in all directions. Will return.

Great spot easy access to city centre

This was a great find just a 15 minute riverside walk to the city centre. Only 5 pitches and I gather they book up quickly. Hard standing but you have to drive over grass to reach the pitches. Some noise in the morning as an active club so lots of coming and going but didn’t bother us. Tight on the side of the river no extra charges for dogs or WiFi will definitely return.

A pleasant surprise, will return.

After reading previous reviews was expecting to be parked on tarmac at edge of car park with no views. What a pleasant surprise; a grassed area with 5 hard standing pitches, 3 of which are facing river so dependant on your height/ windows you could get a good view of various boats. Water and waste in centre of car park as used to wash boats off as well. Excellent for dog walks; circular one round river & woods, large park just outside club, 10 min walk into Durham with more river walks there plus a good mix of usual & independent shops. Toilets clean and modern, showers- ladies have shower curtains then communal changing, men's are open. Husband enjoyed fishing within site boundary with minimal boats passing. Will definitely return.

Ok - not bad - wouldn't rush back

We came up here to see my nephew at Durham Uni. There was no one to welcome us - luckily i paid before we arrived - we didn't see anyone managing the CL AT ALL during our stay. The CL was VERY MUDDY the electric points were a bit chaotic. Once you have spent an afternoon in Durham - there is not a lot else to see and do - just handy if you have a relative at the university really. Not that impressed with the CL site itself - tatty and muddy :-( Sorry.

We would stay here again

Overall we enjoyed our 2 night stay at this site. However, there are one or two things that need improving: There was no one around when we arrived so we had to work out for ourselves where to pitch which isn't obvious as the site is really just an extension of the rowing club car park. We went off for a walk and found someone when we returned who was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The site itself is not the most attractive we have been on, (as said above re carpark extension) and, although it is right on the river, hedges stop you being able to see it from the van. Please note that the shower and toilet facilities are not available between 9pm and 9am and that they are shared with the rowers. I cannot comment on the men's but the ladies had a communal changing area which was not my cup of tea at all. Saying all that, it was surprisingly peaceful and offered lovely riverside walks straight from the site into Durham (20 mins) and it was a bonus having a bar on site.

Central location - ideal for visiting Durham

Spent 4 nights here during July peak season, arrived within the allocated time given when booking in prior. On arrival given the fob to access the building between 8am - 9.30pm The CL is an area off the main car parking to the rowing club, it has the potential to be busy but only a few comings and goings when we were there Pub on site opened from about 6ish - 9.30. Level site, great for motorhomes, good WiFi which kept our 7 year old entertained. Ideal location to see Durham main town walking distance along the river. Lovely watching the rowers/boats sail past . Good facilities will visit again.
