What a Gem of a find

We have just spent a week at Higher Shorston Lakes. It’s our first visit but definitely not our last. We were greeted by Kizzy and directed to our pitch we were the only ones here for 4 nights can’t believe it’s not fully booked. It’s has 3 hard standing pitches with EHU, a toilet and shower room for both male and female. Absolutely fab outlook looking towards Holsworthy with 19 acres of land to walk around, our dog loved it. It has 3 fantastic fishing pools to choose from I must of caught 200lb of fish the one day. All fish are in very good condition. Brett the owner is constantly working to improve the grounds and fishing and has put new stock in the pools. Overall a fabulous CL site.

A hidden gem

We absolutely love Higher Shorston lakes. We recently had our third visit there. The site is fantastic, beautiful surroundings and extremely well maintained. Kizzy and Brett are very welcoming and will act on any requests. The fishing lakes are very scenic and our dogs all love walking round the whole of the site where you often see Roe Deer and birds of prey. The site is a hidden gem but needs to seen to appreciate everything that is on offer. We will return again when we can in our motorhome. David and Jacie

Great site, Tight access

Directions to the road the site is on is easy to fine. The entrance to the site does not have the usual sign at the gate [its 20 yrds in] once you have found the entrance. It is a very sharp and small entrance and I would suggest almost impossible to get in with a very long MH, or a long caravan without unhitching, using motor mover and then hook up again....further down the track is another sharp narrow turn, the same might apply. The owner is in the process of altering this if he can purchase the land next door in due course. Once in, it changes, beautiful views with Holsworthy in the middle distance. 3 CL pitches on gravel and EH. The pitches are actually built into a slope and could be difficult to get in and out of for some, a little bit tight for a full awning on a couple of them. Brett and Kizzy are very warm and hospitable. Toilets and showers,1 girls and 1 boys, very clean a short stroll down hill to both, as is a water point and liquid and paper waste facilities. Another tap at the brow of the slope. The owners are fairly new here. There are 3 lodges on site, 3 fantastic fishing lakes [lakes are private to site users, only at £5 a day]. The lodges are fabulous [we had a peak inside]. We stayed 2 nights, it was very quite. The whole site is immaculate with more hard work being done every day. Well worth a visit. If I had to be a tiny bit fussy, it would be about the price at £25 per night, and no WIFI, albeit very very nice. Thank you Brett and Kizzy.

Outstanding owners

Shortly after arrival our electrics stopped working. Despite Brett trying every possibility it seems the control panel needs replacing. We could have managed without EHU but Kizzy insisted on us moving into one of the three lodges. It was wonderful and twice the size of our own tiny bungalow. I actually shed tears at the kindness of this gesture and we had a magical two nights overlooking the lake and watching the family of geese and the antics of the rabbits. Such a lovely peaceful spot and just what we needed as a respite from my Long Covid journey with my husband getting some much deserved rest. This couple deserve to make a huge success of their new venture and we will be back.

What a find, keep it to yourself!!!

Getting to the site is easy along A roads. Staddon Lane is wide to help negotiate the brick pillars at the entrance, no problem for our 7m motorhome. It was our first stay at Shorston Lakes with new owners Kizzy & Brett I have to say they were the most friendliest CL owners we have met. With a lovely welcome from Kizzy and the dogs, and a mention that we were their first visitors, as they had moved in 3 weeks ago. They have lots of plans for their new venture. The pitches are large enough for our 7 meter motorhome levelling blocks needed on pitch 1. Water point within easy reach. Views and sunsets from the pitches are lovely and look towards Holsworthy. We had our own designated toilet and shower. Great for peace of mind/ covid times. There are 3 lakes with great fishing I havent used a carp rod since I was eighteen and Brett was on hand every day with helpful advice and tips. He even helped with the net on the first catch! I caught into double figures every day and my largest fish of 6kg, from the bottom lake. Beautiful walk down past the lakes to the stream, lovely and peaceful, also great for the wildlife. Overall a neat, large open site, with plenty of space for campers. Many thanks for a great week, and good luck for the future to you both. Phil, Mandy and Leiya the parrot x

Pleasant and peaceful stay

We have just enjoyed a 7 night stay on this cl and wanted to leave a review as there hadn’t been one for a while. Booking was easy and Sylvia was a pleasure to deal with. Originally we had planned to stay in June but due to Covid lockdown we weren’t able to visit until mid sept. Positives for the site are well located and easy to reach the coast and countryside, being about 8 miles inland of bude. Site was well maintained and tidy with good facilities. Due to Covid restrictions Sylvia was only using two cl pitches, both hardstandings, although we were the only van there fir the week" this meant we had exclusive use of one of the toilet/showers reducing the risk of cross contamination. These were of a high standard and very clean.Rubbish was also to be double bagged and kept on the pitch until the end of stay so overall very good Covid measures in place. Fishing was very good with lakes well stocked and very picturesque. Views were also very good. Slight negatives were - pricey at £25 pn without WiFi. As previously mentioned access was tight on the entrance although we managed with a four wheel drive and large twin axle. Deoarture from the hard standing was also difficult as the the hardstandings cut into the slope were on the narrow side. Our porch awning just fitted. Some people may also have difficulty reversing up the slope into the hardstanding area. A mover is recommended. Overall an enjoyable and peaceful stay with friendly owner and we will probably return for the fishing and ease of access to the beaches.

Great holiday

Well just got home from a 10 night break at this site (300 mile away) and worth every mile, we arrived Friday evening and was met by Sylvia the owner who made us very welcome from the off, she showed us round the site and were everything was then left us to it, so firstly there are a couple of water points, chemical and grey disposal, recycle area, two shower/toilets one male one female which looked as new, toilet, very good shower tiled floors and washbasin in each. there is wifi in the games room free of charge, very nice lawned area facing each hardstanding pitch which are quite level. now to echo previous review just be careful on entering and leaving the site it was a bit of a squeeze for me getting out but my van is 7.5 meters, I would suggest asking the local farmer to scrape 3 feet out of the verge facing the entrance but I am cheeky like that, as for the fishing the top lake is like a zoo ha ha, if you are taking your kids/grandkids they will catch all day just take a tin of sweetcorn or pellets, I fished one evening on there and caught 158 carp yes 158 between 1 and 3lb each, the bottom lake is just a natural pond very quiet area to sit, I fished it twice only caught 1 carp each time biggest 7 lb, its full of tiny roach and rudd, the middle lake was low on water while I was there I caught around a dozen upto 5 lb off it, about 20 mins walk to town on a pavement after first 50 yards so safe walking, plenty shops supermarket, butchers, greengrocer, two fish and chip shops, around five pubs selling meals, its a very easy 15 min drive into bude you pass lidl and morrisons on your way, we had some great days, bude, bideford, Clovelly, widemouth, to name a few. if this site was closer to us it would be one of our regulars for sure, thanks for a very nice stay on a well kept site, ste and karen.

Twelve night stay in November

We enjoyed 12 nights staying at this lovely site. Sylvia was very welcoming from our arrival to our departure. The facilities were ‘under refurbishment’, but no problem, Sylvia let us know in advance and provided us with access to one of the lodges to use the bathroom facilities. When my parents suggested visiting the area for 3-5nights, Sylvia also organised the lodge for my parents and their dog to stay. The location was perfect for exploring North Devon, we enjoyed exploring Lydford Gorge, Hartland Quay, Instow, Cooksworthy Forest and Bude. Holsworthy is a short twenty minute walk from the site, we enjoyed the Holsworthy Carnival, and two of the local pubs were friendly, welcomed dogs and offered nice pub food. Two small negatives: the width of the pitch was ‘tight’ for our awning, and access into the driveway has two large brick pillars which were ‘tight’ for the length of our caravan. Overall a really lovely stay in North Devon.

One of our Favourites

Russ, myself and our niece Jessica thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this CL site in August. The hard standing, level pitches are nicely positioned and have great views. Sylvia was very welcoming on our arrival and nothing was too much trouble. The site was very quiet and peaceful with lovely nature walks around the grounds. The lakes look lovely, with lots of fish activity - my husband is a keen fisherman so will definitely be giving the lakes a try next time. CL site was easy to find and there's a local supermarket in Holsworthy five minutes down the road. Other facilities include a good games room, clean toilets and shower, Wi-Fi available and lots of tourist information. All in all - five stars! Jane and Russ.

If only I could this place SIX stars.....

The start of my holiday at Higher Shorston Lakes could not have been more eventful. I broke down at 6PM and called Sylvia, the owner to say we would be very late. She said the site was open and to just pitch up and we would talk in the morning. I arrived at 3am with a very tired wife and eight year old grand daughter. Later that morning I was greeted by Sylvia who was most kind and gracious, given that the tow truck had cut a 9 inch deep furrow in the grass on the way out! Sylvia kindly offered to help find an appropriate garage which she did and the car, three days later, was repaired. Throughout our stay Sylvia checked that we were OK without being intrusive in any way. The site is simply beautiful, set on one side of a valley. The pitches are grey gravel and although the ground slopes substantially, the pitches have been cut into the slope to form spacious areas each with an electrical hook up. The views from Pitch 1 at the top of the slope are amazing over the valley and towards the town of Holsworthy. The toilets and shower are modern and spacious and kept immaculately clean. I was impressed with the recycling area which is large and easy to access. The lawned areas were kept trim and tidy and the games room was a great addition with a pool table and table football. Both are high quality equipment. This makes a great place to explore places that are all much less than an hour away - Bude, Widemouth Bay, Tintagel, Boscastle and Clovelly to name but a few! The town of Holsworthy is about 1.5 miles away (25 mins walk or 5 mins in the car) and it has a good size Waitrose a Co-Op and plenty of other shops. Last but by no means least is the fishing - it is simply brilliant. In one morning my grand daughter and I caught 9 carp - common, mirror and ghost - all between 2lb (1 kilo) and 5.5 lbs (2.5 kilos) - amazing!
