Lovely CL site close to Caen Locks & towpath

We stayed here for a few nighrs in July 2020. Lovely site & owner, which is a 10 min bike ride from the Kennet and Avon canal. The site is a lovely field, grass is kept very neat. The road outside the farm is fairly busy in the day, but not too noisy in the field. A bit of noise from farm machinery cutting and dicing logs but not a problem. The campsite is close to the canal at Caen Locks (29 locks one after the other, which impressive), and the towpath ride. We rode to Bradford on Avon along the canal towpath which was lovely. We also rode up to the Roundway with its white horse & had great views over Devizes and further afield.

Superb

Our first time to this lovely well kept site, which even after the bank holiday is full. We booked here in place of a 5 star adults only site in Chippenham which we have used for over 4 years, but a change in owner appears to have resulted in the reviews for that going downhill fast. Yes this site doesn't have wifi, toilets or serviced pitches, but what it lacks in those facilities it makes up for with a wonderful warm welcome, fantastically kept grass and the minimum requirements for caravanning. If you are a foodie you have some fantastic places to shop. An Italian bakery in Devizes, 2 superb butchers in Bromham and Devizes a farm shop at Bromham and a local cider producer about 1/4 mile from the entrance to the farm. There is a selection of good takeaways and restaurants between here and Devizes, plus a great ice cream parlour in Rowde. This is a working farm so you get all the wonderful sounds and smells you'd expect but the peace and quiet makes it super relaxing. We've already booked again for a months time, even though we only live 6 miles away it's worth it.

Cycling advice

We stayed for just one night on our way home from Cornwall, with the idea of cycling on the Kennet and Avon canal. It was well worth it. The site is a pleasant field, which was fine for our motorhome as the weather has been dry. As it's a farm you will hear the usual farm machinery noises, and the road is fairly busy in the day, but not too noisy. Plenty of lovely bird noises too, and we watched a wagtail escape the attentions of a sparrowhawk. It's not far from the campsite to the canal at Caen Locks (which are very impressive), and the towpath ride towards the east through Devizes was very pleasant. Just be careful on the road outside the campsite at busy times. It is unrestricted then 30mph within a half a mile, when you reach Rowde village. We'll return one day to try the ride towards Trowbridge on the canal.

A lovely family holiday!

We stayed here for 7 nights with our 2 children. It is a lovely site, there are no real views as the hedges are high but this does not spoil the site at all. The owner keeps the field very tidy. The owners and his son who help out were very welcoming and friendly. The son had good knowledge of the area and was able to help me map a run out and also advise on places to visit. The site is situated nicely for visiting local areas. We will definitely return in the future.

One of the Best

The previous accolades are fully justified. We were warmly welcomed by Ann; Chris and son James were both working on the farm. Although no longer caravanners themselves their previous experience has meant they are able to provide the facilities we all wish for. We were on site at a very busy time, but were never inconvenienced by noise, even during late night harvesting. As well as harvesting [James is a whizz on the tele-handler stacking the bales of hay] it was also a stressful time as the cattle were being tested for TB, which they passed! Although tv is listed as fair we had good reception, nor did we have any problems with 10 amp power. As well as Devizes, the site is well placed for Melksham, Calne, Chippenham and Bath, and Laycock and Corsham used as film sets for period dramas. We went to the George Inn in Sandy Lane, about 3 miles on the Chippenham Road. They do a very good carvery at a reasonable price. We shall be back provided Ann and Chris are not victims of their own success.

Tidy venue

A local CL for us to explore North Wiltshire. Well maintained by friendly owners and spacious with easy access. Visits to Lacock and the Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal are a must and we liked Devizes which has broad selection of all the usual services on offer.

One night stay...perfect!

We don't live far at all, but wanted a night away in Dora our twin axle. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The site is well maintained, easy to access pitches are all level, grass and there is EHU. There is a water and waste point and recycling facilities onsite. The site is quiet, peaceful and the pitches are well spaced apart. Even though the weather turned on us and it lashed down with rain at the start of the evening and during the night, we had enough rest and recuperation during our stay. There's lots to see and do nearby, Devizes is a lovely market town (market on Thursday) and the Kennet & Avon Canal Caen Hill Locks are not far away. You could nip down the road in the car to the Rowdy Cow Cafe for a coffee, lovely lunch or one of their super ice creams. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend Horse Lane!

BEAUTIFUL CL

We have just left this lovely site having spent 5 nights there. This was our second time here and we will definately come back again. It is a beautiful site, well kept with easy access to the water and disposal facilties. Lovely owners who are very friendly. There is a little bit of noise from tractors but it is a working farm and it was no problem. Devizes is a lovely little market town with good shops and supermarkets. A visit to Caen Locks nearby is essential as it is a remarkable piece of engineering. The CL is thoroughly recommended. Thank you to the Collett family for a lovely stay.
