Likeable Lightwood

We stayed here last week but unfortunately due to the wet weather the camper got stuck in the mud at the entrance to the CL. We were towed out with a tractor and the owner said that they had gravel and drainage pipes to put in which the site obviously needs as mentioned by previous reviews and the fact that it is open all year. We were relocated to the farmyard next to caravan storage! CL field looked very scenic though and location is great for visiting our son in Sheffield. The owners have a great website with lots of walks on but too muddy to partake. Our dog got poorly whilst we were staying there and we had to use the vets down Lightwood lane who were very good. There is a reasonably regular bus service on main road at top of lane.

Lovely, peaceful CL so close to the city

We stayed overnight here on our way back to North Yorkshire from Cornwall, to visit friends in Sheffield. Such a lovely, peaceful and quiet site. Remarkably so, being so close to the city of Sheffield and just off its southern ring road, and yet having such a rural outlook. At twilight we saw bats and enjoyed the sounds of nature around us. Kay, the owner, was very helpful before our stay via email and friendly when we met her. We’d definitely recommend and will certainly be back.

Bad Experience at this site

Unfortunately we had a bad experience at this site and would not return or recommend now. We have never left a negative site review until now however we feel upset at the owners lack of ownership to the situation we encountered. When we booked the owner was very friendly and accommodating. As we are still shielding she agreed we could have the end pitch and put string to block it off so others couldn’t take it, which was very considerate. When we arrived it was pouring down and very muddy at the entrance to the field. No one can help the Yorkshire weather but maybe some gravel at this entrance part of the field may be helpful as the wheels on the car was literally caked in mud. Regarding tranquility to say the site is down a narrow lane there is quite a lot of noisy traffic up and down on the road, especially early morning directly behind the caravans so not the most peaceful of sites if that’s what you are looking for. There was a huge pile of horse manure at the side of our pitch. As the owners had just placed the string at the edge of our pitch we assumed they thought this was acceptable. The pitch we were on had lots and lots of flies and flying bugs/insects which can’t be helped by it was probably encouraged by the huge pile of manure! We tried to cover it with some tree branches. I stayed in the caravan after the first couple of days and we kept on all the fly screens to try and keep out the bugs as I have a problem with my Immune system and didn’t want to get bitten. Unfortunately I was and had to speak with my Doctor. They advised I leave the site and I stated antibiotics. So we had stayed 4 nights out of our planned 8. When we spoke with the owner she said she was very sorry about the manure and felt awful that the pitch had been left in that state. and was so sorry but yet refused to refund the remaining 4 days of our stay. We felt that half the fee would have at least shown some recognition for the situation, and we said we would be happy to accept half the fees back but unfortunately they refused. This was a very disappointing reaction we felt. We had to find somewhere else to stay and pay again. It is a very basic site however this is reflected in the low price so is expected and so overall a good site price. We appreciate the low site price but that had nothing to do with the situation I have described above. It is just so disappointing to have received the response and attitude we did as a customer from the owner to the problem when they acknowledged the pitch should not have been left for us like it was.

Lovely views and area

We stayed for a few nights in December……..perhaps not the best time after a very rainy time as the field was hugely slippery! We were warned about it beforehand and there are plans for HS. The views were lovely and there are some lovely walks from the site. Sheffield has a lot to offer. The owners were very nice, and were prepared to tow us out if we got stuck!

Nice site

Great no frills place to stay for access to surrounding countryside. Superb views. Good welcome and easy access to walks without moving the motorhome. Great location for us to catch up with friends living that end of Sheffield. Need to use levelling blocks but that’s a regular occurrence wherever you park up. Great to have own access to water tap and EHU, a deciding factor to use this site. This is our second visit over a number of years and will be happy to return again. Excellent value for money.

What's not to like?

Just returned from a three night stay at this site. Electric Hook-up, your own water tap, very peaceful/tranquil site set in the countryside yet so close to Sheffield, Chesterfield, Peak District etc. Lovely views over the valley, plenty of country walks direct from the site, decent size pitches, grass nicely mown. All this for £10, yes only £10, a night. Kay was available on the end of the phone on the couple of occasions we needed to contact her. Some people weren't happy about the toilet disposal being on the farm 150 yards away, but as others have said that's not an issue really, and you can drive round if you want. All the details are explained clearly on their (very good) website so you can clearly see what you're getting/not getting. However, there isn't a link from the CAMH CL listing to the website so you have to find that yourself and details on CAMH listing are a bit brief, so my constructive suggestion would be to add a link to the website on the CAMH listing. We would recommend this site as an excellent "no frills" site with EHU and at £10 it must surely be one of the best value sites in the whole CL network

Won’t be the last visit

Stayed at this site over the weekend as it was our side of Sheffield and it certainly won’t be the last time we go. You can’t believe that such a peaceful area can be just 5 miles from the centre of Sheffield . Easy to find using directions given and the site was just what we were looking for; if you want peace and quiet then you’re at the right place. Yes the toilet emptying is at the farm but that isn’t really an issue but there a few things that need pointing out. Firstly, the site itself is down a very narrow Lane so make sure you have your wits about you as cars tend to come speeding around the blind bends. Secondly, the pitches aren’t marked out so you have to guess where to pitch up but each pitch has its own tap so we just went to the right of a tap to give us an idea. Handy for trams and busses into Sheffield as all you have to do is walk to the top of the road and the trams are straight in front you. There is also a shopping centre just up the road and an Asda supermarket 3 miles away for those essentials. All in all a great weekend and a great place to get away.

A pleasant weekend

I don't understand previous reviews for this rural/city site. We found it to be exactly how the web site described it. You can't beat it for value. Very quiet setting on the edge of the city of Sheffield. The site is fairly level. Despite the recent heavy rain we found the ground to be very firm. The EHU proved to be reliable. Ok so the chemical disposal is at the farm 100yds (ish) down the road. That is the farm you pass on the left every time you leave the site. Who wants chemical disposal beside their pitch anyway?? Having arrived on the Friday afternoon we got to meet Kay (and their dogs) on Saturday lunchtime. Very friendly and welcoming lady. if you are visiting this area I would definately recommend this site. We are hoping to be back at some point.

Super Value - Great Location

Located on a quiet country lane just a few miles outside Sheffield this CL is run by a very helpful and friendly couple (Kay and Chris). Even in October (2017) the site is still accessible is somewhat soft under foot. Power supply is okay but tripped out when my we used higher power appliances (coffee make and hairdryer). But Chris came and reset the circuit breakers after we sent a text. Water supply is on the CL location but to get rid of toilet waste you need to go up to a point on the farmhouse site just about 75m back up the country lane. Very quiet and pretty I am sure we will be back again.

Crackin' Site!

Luvly site, down a country lane just off the main ring road, secluded, quiet. Bit wet but that's our great British weather. Easy to find if you follow the directions. Mostly flat, Yes the toilet emptying point is at the farm, but I just put my cassette in the car, job done. The owners were very friendly & helpful. We have relatives in nearby Rotherham so ideal for us. I think some members expect too much from a CL & all for £10 a night!. What more can I say, we will be back, Thanx Mavis. Lol.
