Fabulous Views but we didn’t get off to a good start

Recently stayed on this site for 9 nights. Arrived but no one to meet us and no information board indicating where to site van and no pitch markers so we set up on the most level area left with a wonderful view. Unfortunately we were then asked to move as the area we had chosen is not for caravan use. A sign indicating this would have saved us an hour and a lot of hassle. Then had to move to a very sloping area of the site so our awning was a bit haywire. Facilities were ok but could do with a bit of sprucing up. Washing machine was a definite plus. Always more than 5 vans on site, as many as 9 at one time.

What a Gem of a Site

I recently stayed here at South Port 'o Spittal, with my Husband a 2 dogs. What a beautiful site. The views from the site are quite breathtaking, and the place has a lovely quiet feel to it. The site itself is very well maintained and tidy.... the grass was beautifully cut and was cut several times during our stay. There is no extra charge for the toilet and shower facilities which are clean and tidy. I had absolutely no problem using theses facilities, toilet stalls were well stocked and lovely hand wash also available. There is a Laundry and Information Room too. The cost of the washing facilities are, I think, very reasonable, £2 per wash and £2 per 60mins drying.. just leave you money in the honesty box. For a small site the facilities are outstanding, and have recently been upgraded..I don't know of many Certificated sites that have as good facilities. There's lots to do in the area, and we found different things to do each day.. Well worth a visit is Corsewell Lighthouse.. the afternoon cream tea was brilliant. Loads of fabulous beaches too for walking the dogs. Marburry SmokeHouse just beyond Newton Stewart is well worth a visit too. All in all we had a wonderful 10 days here.. the weather was wonderful and both John & Ian Beck made us very welcome. If I could I'd mark this site with 6 Stars.... We will definitely be back to this hidden gem. £12 per night is an absolute bargain.

Wonderful CL

Enjoyed 11 wonderful nights at this super CL. Hard standing and grass pitches, grass lovely and short and picked up when cut. As we had glorious sunshine when we were there the ground was firm and dry, so can't comment on the grass pitches if very wet. There are ladies and gents toilets and free showers, basic but clean and perfectly adequate, I am a bit fussy with showers but had no problem using these. There is a washer and dryer, £2 per wash just pay in an honesty box. Also washing up area with information. This CL with its facilities and location for £12 per night £1 for awnings, is exceptional value. Not sure whether I would recommend the site for families with young children as very quiet. The views over the sea are lovely, and we had some cracking sunsets. Even though it was half term the roads there were very quiet so easy to get around to all the lovely places to see all within easy reach, isolated beaches, forest, coastal paths, nature and lighthouses. The quirky Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel well worth a visit. Had one meal out at The Crown Hotel in Portpatrick as we had friends staying there, excellent food, and also a lovely village, and harbour. Good coastal walks from there too. We have never visited this area of Scotlanf before, usually head up to the Highlands, only booked this CL the day before we left as the weather forecast was good for up that area. We were pleasantly surprised with the area and the great CL and sure we will be back.

Great Stay

We stayed here for 7 nights in April . The site was easy to find the lanes were narrow but lots of passing places and to be honest very little traffic. We had a hardstanding pitch for our 7.4 motorhome and also room for our Smartcar trailer and car. We had a great welcome on arrival . The facilities were being painted and we found them to be all we required. The price to use the laundry was very reasonable. The views were great , And great areas to walk the dog .

Fantastic little site

This really is a lovely site. We have just returned after 8 nights here. Pretty much, wherever you pitch you will have amazing views over the Irish Sea. On the site there are toilets and showers and the added bonus of a laundry room. There are hard standing pitches at the top, only one would you be able to have an awning, maybe, we pitched on the grass. It did get a bit splodgy, but there was an awful lot of rain. The owner seemed really nice and helpful. We didn't see much of him, but this was not an issue. On the last night, I went to pay and ask if we could stay an extra night!! You can walk or cycle into Port Patrick and there are lovely cliff top walks in the area as well as some beautiful beaches and bays. On an evening we would walk down to the little beach half a mile from the campsite. A great week for a family of 4 and a puppy! We will definitely be returning.

Far from the madding crowd

This is a spacious site with four hardstandings (no room for awnings) and two large grassy areas (room for awnings but certain areas very soggy after rain). Plenty of room to spread. The views out over fields of sheep and then the sea to Northern Ireland are outstanding. At night you can see all the lights twinkling on the coast. As in the rest of Galloway, lush plants abound. Loved the plantings round the toilet block. It could be Cornwall in this part of Scotland. On the subject of toilet block, this is the only aspect that lets this site down. There are 3 pre-fab type units, well past their best-before date. The fabric was falling apart in several places. (A new shower unit appears to have been installed in the ladies' block.) The floors were always pooling with water, and cobwebs and dead insects abounded. However, there was always a good hot shower with no silly tokens, and the washing machine and drier in the laundry block was a very fair price. It would be expensive to replace this toilet/shower block, CLs vary in facilities, and the token-free showers and non-rip-off laundry offset the dilapidation as far as I was concerned. As for the wind turbines, you get used to them very quickly. This is a great site for visiting the lovely coast of Galloway, Portpatrick, various subtropical gardens, and the hills and lochs of Galloway Forest Park. You could try a boat trip to Belfast too. I enjoyed cycling up and down the Rhins. Mr Beck (owner) is the nicest gentleman you could wish to meet.

Great CL

For a couple of miles approaching the CL the roads are single track, nothing to worry about as very little traffic and passing points. Arrival at CL you are confronted by a view over the Irish Sea towards Northern Ireland, stunning. The CL has seperate Ladies and Gents toilets and shower, we didn't use as they looked like they needed a good spring clean. There is also a laundry facility at £1 a load, real value. Although we got BBC radio there is no wifi and no EE phone signal, can't comment on TV. Stranraer is 5 miles away and has a good selection of shops including Morrisons with a filling station. Plenty of places of Interest close by. This site is truly value for money at only £10/night. Will definitely return.
