Excellent CL but ....!

The site itself is all that you can expect from a well run CL - hard standings, water and electric hook-up points. But, and its a big but, the chemical toilet disposal point was to put it mildly, mank!!!! It has obviously judging by other reviews this year, been causing problems for some time and it nearly overflowed twice when I stayed before the liquids drained. It was reported, but not seemingly attended to, so I wondered if the holding tank was well overdue being emptied. This is something that the next Caravan and Motorhome Club CL inspection should pay attention towards, as I am not the only member to point this out. That said, caravanners could help themselves as floating around in the debris, were what was obviously non-flushing wipes. Come on folks, do your stuff as members, we don't expect to find that. You wouldn't do it at home, so why do it when away?

Comment from the Club

Thank you for your review and we are delighted that you found the CL Site excellent. We wanted to reassure you that the Chemical Toilet Disposal Point has now been rectified.

Perfectly acceptable site but......

We stayed for two nights over Easter and the site was fine but I thought the site had fully serviced pitches ( one of the reasons why I booked it ).You pay on arrival in the pub and the woman who took my money confirmed that the pitches are fully serviced but they are not. There is one tap at one end of the site - the pitch we were on was the furthest from it ! - but that is not a reason for not going to the site. It appears that there is a lot of confusion because there are two CLs called Fox and Rabbit. The one we stayed on is called Fox and Rabbit Inn which incidentally does not come up on the Club's website. If you search for Fox and Rabbit on the Club website, a site called Fox and Rabbit Holiday Cottages and Motorhome CL comes up which says that it does have fully serviced pitches and is at the same general location but owned by somebody different to the one we stayed at. I did not find out exactly where this other one is but I think it was in a field to the south of the site we stayed at. Anyway, if you go to the Fox and Rabbit Inn CL's website - foxandrabbit.co.uk - you will find a link there to the Club's website with all the details for the Inn site but you cannot find that by looking on the Club's website ! I do not understand why and I have raised it with the Club so hopefully the Club will sort it out. I would endorse the good points about the site made by others, especially the access from the site to open countryside, although it would have been nice if there had been a gate in the south east corner of the site onto the public footpath which runs from the pub past the site and into the vastness of Dalby Forest. I ended up lifting my dog over the fence and climbing over it to walk along the public footpath, instead of walking all the way back to the pub to get onto the path and then having to walk past the site to get to the point where I climbed over. A previous review complained about the state of the toilet disposal facility but it was fine while we were there. Another review referred to noise from a nearby "industrial site" which I think must be a barn associated with the adjacent farm. We did not hear a lot of noise from there - bearing in mind that you have to expect agricultural machinery working in the countryside, we did not find it objectionable. Although there is a lot of traffic on the A169 past the pub, we found that the CL was far enough away from the road for the traffic noise to not affect our enjoyment of the site.

Excellent for the Many Places of Interest

Visited Fox & Rabbit Inn site 1st - 8th August 2020 Excellent site with easy access and welcoming staff. Good food in the dog friendly pub. Hard standings are good with easy access to water points refuse area and chemical disposal point. Many places of interest are within easy drive, Nice site for our dog too. I would have given 5 stars but for the grass needing cutting and the noise to early evening from the adjacent industrial site. Peter & Veronica Caravanner from Kent

Dirty Elsan point full of human faeces Reported - no action taken

I am sure this is a better site come the summer dry months but in winter is very messy on the entrance and sadly you have to walk through puddles to open the entrance gate. Hard standing was not bad. The Elsan point was disgusting and reported by us but NOT sorted or even looked at for that matter. It seems it is a well know problem at this site and had been reported the week previous. It was over flowing with human faeces, solid excrement. WE will not return.

Good site, good food friendly staff.

This was a last minute booking for us as we had made others plans which were cancelled last minute. Despite our initial disappointment we decided we would try here with it only being a short 70 mile drive from home. What a gem of a CL Site. It’s the second field in and you still get road noise but we weren’t disturbed by it at all. The pub has a good menu and we ate there twice in our 4 night stay. Big thank you to the staff for their warmth of welcome and service. The pitches are well spaced and level, with trees to make a wind break, so even on windy days it wasn’t to bad. Lots to do if your walkers and cyclists we walked in to Dal y Forest from the site and spent our days walking amongst the spruce trees. If you like Scarborough and Whitby are far and there lots to see and do if you wish. All in all a 5* CL.

Fox and Rabbit, Very Good CL

We know the area well, and looking for a Winter base, the Fox and Rabbit ticked all the must have boxes for us! Superb moorland location, just off main road between Pickering and Whitby, so great for getting out and about. Contacting the pub with our late booking was easy and welcoming, directions are good, big pull in area to left of pub that will get even the largest of outfits safely off the road. This first area is Summer overspill for pub, you pass through first gate into newest bit of site, with five very nice and tidy gravelled hardstandings pitches looking down across a large grassed area, out towards the Moors. Each pitch has hook up and picnic seating, one tap serves all pitches. Passing through a second gate brings you to the more mature CL area. This is more sheltered, surrounded by dry stone walls and a thin belt of mainly conifers. We had gale force winds during our stay, but the pitches were very sheltered. Big grassed area overlooked by all pitches, which are large and deep, each with a hook up. Small service area up near gate has tap, Chem Toilet Empty and rubbish bins. We were offered a key to toilet (small refundable deposit for key) but we didn’t need it. It’s there, but no idea what it is like. No MH drive over point, but a bit of hose will reach into Waste drain, and water fill tap is next to site service road. This second field is further from road, so quieter. Walk of around 200 metres to pub, which serves lovely food, but book a table as it is popular. Pitches are well away from pub car park. So much to see and do in area, it’s a place we return to constantly. But it’s also one of those sites that is just nice to stay around and chill out. Lots of bird life, probably deer, certainly rabbits and the odd Fox!😁 Pickering is a quick 10 minute drive away, for Co op and Lidl, lots of great independent shops and market. Castle and Church well worth a visit, Home of North York Moors Railway, with train links to Whitby and elsewhere. Petrol stations in Pickering and Whitby. Dog owners.......dogs very welcome, including in the pub. Lots of footpaths all around, and of course some wonderful walking and cycling. There is access directly into Dalby Forest for walkers and cyclists. Motorist entrance five minutes away. All in all, a very nice place to stay, and good Winter value at £15 per night. One we shall definitely use again.

Very Good

Just got back from a weekend here and this is one to return to. We would advise the owner to at least double the width of the road in front of the hardstanding pitches, this would save on having manoeuvre over the grass which when wet, as it was this weekend, is quite boggy. The pitches are long enough, we have a twin axle caravan, but again could do with been wider allowing the parking of the car on hardstanding saving the owners grass. There is a small amount of road noise but nothing that could be deemed intrusive. The pub has good well cooked food and drink with a menu that is varied and inexpensive. Overall this CL is one that without doubt we will return to...open all year....£15.00 per night including electric....what more can we say. This almost a five star review!!! Thanks
