The Old School House

Stayed here in November, & really liked the place, very friendly owners & a toilet too. The site is just off the road & access is a bit tight only attempt it coming from Broughton so you can turn right into the site! Do not attempt it from the other direction! Although the site is right beside the road after 10pm it's a very quiet road & noise is NOT a problem. The pitches are surrounded by mature trees which does obscure the views somewhat. This would be lovely place on a summers evening, there are picnic tables & even a fire pit. TV reception is OK on an omni. We went out in Broughton in Furness & had a great night. Lively place & friendly. It's not too far away but there are some steep hills. You can walk into town via a footpath or along the narrow road takes about 25 minutes.... get the local mini bus taxi to bring you back... it's worth it! A great place to explore from!

Quiet tranquil.

We are a couple with small two birth touring caravan. I would seek Barbara's advice if taking a large touring unit. Barbara sent an email with directions a few days prior to our visit these turned out to be useful as you will avoid steep narrow winding roads. We had a great few days loved the area best views from pitch four and five, plenty-full great walks from the site, near to the village 1.8 miles away where you can get all your needs, a short drive will take you to places of interest and more walks.  The single toilet doubles up as an information point. The site and facilities just as described, level hard-standing shale, well worth a visit/stay.

Tight squeeze for large units

Lovely spot. V friendly owner. Have 7m motor home.  Approach from south in daylight fine. Approach from the north in the dark beware. On a bend, have to swing out to align. Caught my wheel arch on gatepost

Great views

Great CL with excellent views towards the fells and down to the coast. All hardstanding, so great for our small motorhome, yet well laid out with plenty of young trees and well mown grassy areas so felt very 'country' & tranquil. All very tidy. Enjoyed lazing on our picnic rug in the Easter sun, when not cycling all the BIG hills and fabulous flat valleys :). Neighbouring valley of Dunnerdale was absolutely glorious and very quiet for walking or cycling. Recommend.

Excellent site

We had an amazing time at The Old School House, well kept pitches and facilities with really useful local information about pubs, walks and other bits and pieces available. The owner is lovely and said we could stay all day the next day if we wanted to go walking. There are so many great walks straight out of your camper! We also got engaged here and so happy to have spent it at a lovely site in a beautiful location. We will definitely be back!

Away from it all.

We have just spent 2 nights here and had a relaxing and peaceful break. The site seems rather small at first sight but the 5 all hard-standing pitches are well laid out and fairly private despite being quite close together. There is an electric hook-up for each pitch and a shared water point and grey water grid. The toilet, chemical disposal point and bins are down a short path towards the owners' house. The site is right next to the road but there is little traffic and it is very quiet day and night. We had no problem entering or leaving the site with our 6.3 metre long caravan and think it would be fine for all but very large outfits. The owners are friendly yet not intrusive and have taken a lot of trouble to add the little extras that make a huge difference to a site, such as a bench overlooking the amazing views and a grassy hollow with a picnic bench and an open fireplace for barbecues etc. We particularly appreciated the laminated instructions for local walks along the many public footpaths in the area, which were detailed and easy to follow, and the very informative things to do / places to go sheet, all obviously written from personal experience. Despite seeming to be in the middle of nowhere, the village of Broughton-in-Furness with cafes, pubs, an assortment of independent high quality food shops, a petrol station and a Tourist Information Office is under 3 miles away and Coniston Lake and village are about 7 miles in the other direction. In the summer there is a bus service (2 or 3 times daily I think) to both these places (and beyond) which will pick you up and drop you off at the campsite gates - timetables are in the Toilet / information room. This was our first visit but we will definitely return especially as the site has the advantage of being open all year.
