A site of two halves!

We arrived on a Monday just after the school holidays in Sept. The access through Alfriston is tight so be prepared if you have a big unit, we have a small caravan and still got stuck causing opposing traffic to reverse. The access road is shale and lumpy so takes a while and the locked gates are not the best. Found a spot after waiting for some others to move out, there's no arrival / departure times enforced so be prepared to find a full site if you get here early. Facilities all great and easy to find. From Mon to Fri the site is an absolute delight, fantastic walking nearby, very peaceful, owls hooting at night. We would have marked it as one of our favourite sites but then Friday PM came and the hoards of campers arrived to the adjacent camping site. The access road was constantly in flux with vehicles and people all having a good look at the CL as they passed! The campsite encourages fires and so be prepared for a curtain of smoke and BBQ to cover the site at 7pm. The noise is just people enjoying themselves but then the the folk singers started...it did all quiet down by 10pm though. So Mon+Fri it's a 5 star site, Fri-Sun it's a 3 star site. We would definitely come again but avoid peak season and the weekend.

Peaceful location in a beautiful village

Had one night here before catching the ferry from Newhaven. Easy to find just take final access slowly as it’s a bit bumpy. We were given the code to unlock the padlock to the site but it was rather fiddly. Owner very friendly on the phone but we didn’t see her to pay until just before we left when we had a nice chat. She has lots of info on the area if you ask her. The field is an old orchard and you can pitch anywhere. Nice and open for sun. We weren’t troubled by the campsite next door. The village is beautiful and you can also walk directly onto the downs. We will definitely use it again for the ferry but will have 2 or 3 night to see the are first. Worth more than one nights stay.

Nice CL. Note pricing is £20 pn not £14

Nice CL. Good location and the CL itself is pretty, well done, and well kept. Note that the price is actually £20 pn not £14. When we were there the campsite next door (which is separately owned) wasn't bad at all: some noise but it didn't go on late. But we weren't there at height of season. I can imagine - it would be more intrusive at the height of school holiday season. Easy walk into Alfriston, and I'd recommend The George as a nice hostelry. Personally I think it is a touch over priced compared to some others of similar ilk, but I suspect it carries a bit of a premium as a convenient stopover for those going to the Newhaven ferry.

A lovely CL!

This CL was typical of what we love about them: Friendly owner, easy pitching (levelling blocks needed), great location for walking the beautiful Downs and surrounding villages, and fairly peaceful (bit of traffic & dog noise from the neighbouring site but didn't disturb us too much...). Clean facilities, plenty of space and overall, had everything we needed. Alfriston is a delightful village and there are many other lovely places to explore on foot. We chose not to use our bikes because the roads around are a bit busy for us. Overall, a great stay.

Great Location

Spacious CL where you can choose where to pitch and with a friendly and relaxed welcome. We stayed late august just before bank holiday and CL was full but quiet (neighbouring campsite also very quiet). Great location for walking, cycling and with easy access to Alfriston.

We will return!

Visited this site in October 2019 for 4 nights. Alfriston is a little tight in places with a big caravan but if buses and lorries can get through then so should you be able to. The lane up to the site does have pot holes but they are passable with care. Nothing too great to worry about. At the top of the lane, before you get to the camping field, there are locked double gates that allow you into the CL. If you miss them you can turn around in the camping field. The owner will give you the gate code when you book a pitch. The CL itself is a fairly large field with plenty of space. There is a hard standing area next to the gate that will hold 2 units. There are 3 taps around the field. Also 3 hookup posts each allowing 2 connections. The bins and chemical disposal area are hidden behind a wooden fence. They were fit for purpose. It did pour down for a couple of days so we were glad we had a pitch on the hard-standing area. No leveling blocks were needed here but in other parts of the field you will need them. We spotted a Fox, some rabbits and a squirrel in the field during our stay. There was a little noise from the camping field next door but that died down in the evening. I would not want to be camping in October I can tell you! Positives: Large well kept field with shelter if needed. Plenty of options to site your unit. 3 water points. EHU easy to plug into. Decent chemical toilet disposal area. Easy walk into Alfriston. Easy access to the south downs way, Newhaven, Seaford, Eastbourne, Beachy Head and Lewes. Negatives: Some potholes in access road. Some parts of the field need levelling blocks. Can potentially get noisy in the summer months due to camping field. No phone signal. Poor TV signal. Overall, despite the torrential downpour, we really enjoyed our stay and would return. The negative comments from preview reviews have mainly been addressed. Its a nice tidy CL.

Nice and Quiet

Lovely peacefull site, just the sounds of the wildlife, the owls hooting at night, buzzards flying overhead, foxes in the near by field. Wonderfull base for walking on the South Downs. Just a five minute walk to the lovely village of Alfriston. As said in other reviews the lane leading to the site has pot holes but this keeps the traffic speed down so it keeps the noise of the vehicles going to the stables low. We will use this again

We love this site!

This is a lovely site- plenty of room, beautiful surroundings and walks, family friendly and laid back. We've stayed a few times and always really enjoyed ourselves. We've never had access problems or anything else for that matter. Horse riders trotting past in the morning, easy walk in to beautiful Alfriston for a breakfast or ice cream and no phone reception- perfect!

Ruined

This used to be a lovely CL when run by the father but is now blatently overcamped so we unfortunately will no longer use it. The access is now terrible with enormous potholes and the ajacent field is used for camping therefore I do not consider it is a CL any longer. What a shame!

Not worth the money they charge

Just got home from this site, road leading up to it has large pot holes. Adjoining camp site can be rather noisey. Looks rather unkept ,water hoses just laying on the floor, water hose to wash toilet  cassette was split and sprayed everywhere. There was rubbish around( old plastic chairs, old rake stack of old tyres and rubble) there was an electric cable running from a barn to an electric point on the site. Three of the electric points had bags over them so were unusable. This could be a nice site but needs a great deal of improvement. Definately not worth the £13 / per night they are charging. The owner was nowhere to be seen no phone signal so was unable to ring. We saw the owner twice all week. Once to book us in the day after we arrived and again at the end of our stay to collect our money.
