Peace and quiet on a small working farm.

A peaceful 5 pitch certified location. All hard standing with electric hook up. Two fresh water supply pipes. Shower in toilet in the farmyard at rear of the main house. Tidy enough and serviceable. Elsan point at rear of barns. Pitches are separated by grassed areas , nicely mowed on my arrival. Caldbeck is a lovely small village with pub, 2 cafes and a few small shops. Very hard ground. Well drained but need hard ground pegs for awnings. Owners are friendly and helpful.

Poultry farm

A pleasant site quite near 2 pretty villages, with easy access too other parts of the Lake District. The down side, certainly in warm weather are the flies the site has a large free range chicken barn and we were plagued with flies that managed to get in through the vents. It was not difficult to kill 20 plus flies a day inside the van, even when the windows were kept closed. Another irritation was the site owners dog who on an almost daily basis came onto the grass between the vans to do its business, I did complain about but the dog still kept up its daily routine. Not a site I would revisit.

Perfect for us

Just enjoyed a 4 night break at this perfect for us, very quiet CL. Enjoyed watching the lambs play. So nice to access walks from the site without driving. Lovely family run farm. We hope to return again soon.

Hidden Gem

I’m almost scared to write this review and attract too much attention! We booked this just as a stop over on our way back from Scotland, having already spent a few days in the Lake District. How lucky were we! A superb site, 5 level pitches spaced nicely apart. Fantastic views of the amazing countryside. Lambs directly next to us, free range chickens strolling through the site, idyllic. The village is a short stroll from the site along the lane, and is delightful. A village store, lovely tea/coffee shop next to the large stream with outside seating, several lovely well stocked craft shops, and of course the village pub. AMD the sun all’s. Breathtaking scenery all around us. We loved it so much we stayed an extra night, one of the loveliest CL’s we’ve been to.

Working farm with great access to multiple Wainwrights

Throstle Hall is a working farm which obviously has been a CL for many years. The farming family made us feel welcome and we were left to our own devices. We were the only ones on site following a busy Covid hampered season. There are five pitches, all level hardstanding. The farm has free range hens and sheep and working dogs. Eggs a plenty. Walk to Caldbeck takes about 7 minutes and The Oddfellows Arms is highly recommended. Shop has milk, papers, bread etc. Plenty of access to Carrock Fell and lots of other Wainwrights. We didn’t find a shower and toilet but this was probably down to Covid. Don’t expect totally peaceful early mornings as it’s a working farm. TV reception excellent if that’s what you want. Highly recommended

Throstle Hall, Caldbeck, Cumbria....Grand place.

This quiet CL is situated just before the farm alongside the drive about 1/4 ml off the Caldbeck to Hesketh Newmarket road. The entrance is the first on the left about 1/2 ml from the end of Caldbeck village, is nice and wide but not well indicated having the site notice on the left hand side of the entrance. There are 5 decent sized Hardstanding pitch, 3 of which are drive in drive out type while the other 2 are positioned in the corners looking down the valley. It appeared that when we were there only 4 of the pitches had EHUs. There is a toilet and a separate free shower situated behind the farmhouse. The village of Caldbeck has a pub, a couple of cafes and a small shop, and the graveyard is the final resting place of John Peel. There are numerous walks for the village, including the Cumbia Way and the C2C, and there's good access to Lakeland's Northern Fells. Carlisle and Penrith are about 15 mils away for any major shops, although there is a Lidl at Wigton 8ml away. Many of the lanes in the area are narrow and steep so quite challenging for most cyclists. There are few historic buildings in the area, Hutton in the Forest, Dalmain Mansion, and Isle Hall are all HHA properties, and there's also Wordsworth's house at Cockermouth. We will certainly return to explore more of this interesting area.

We had the best plot

There are two great pitches, where you have to reverse in, if hitched. We went in forwards with the motor mover and had a great view over the fields. . The other pitches have pros and cons. They are drive in and out, and you could even avoid unhitching a caravan if only staying the night. However, you are closer to neighbours. I suggest a look at Google Earth. All are level hardstanding of crushed rocks with dwarf walls because of the slope of the site. Putting an awning up can be a challenge and fortunately I had brought metal pegs almost by chance. They were needed. Agree with the other recent reviews. Lots to interest in the area (e.g., walks), while key attractions of the lakes do require a bit of travelling. Facilities were good (the WC/Shower should probably been described as exclusive use rather than non-exclusive). The welcome was good.

Great site on a working farm

We visited this site for 3 nights in Feb 18 & were very impressed. On a working farm with very friendly owners. Nicely situated for walking in the hills or along the river & only 5 minutes stroll to the village pub & shop. The pub served a good selection of beers & the food looked very good although we didn’t eat here. Nice shower facilities which were free with plenty of hot water. Good access road with hard standing pitches that were level. The water standpipes froze until after lunch but alternative facilities in the shower building if required. Great place, we’ll be back.

Throstle Hall CL

A nice little site especially for those with a small vans as there is a toilet & shower on site, which is always a bonus for us. That said it's ideal for larger vans & caravans too! The welcome on arrival was warm & welcoming & the pitches were level looking down the valley towards Hesket Newmarket. We chose to go there for a meal in the evening & stayed far longer than we intended.... great pub & food! Loads of old photo albums & books, warm & cozy atmosphere. The site has great TV reception but phone signal wasn't so good. It was peaceful & quiet despite being a working farm. The acces road is quite long & a little lumpy in places but shouldn't present any problems to the vast majority of vehicles & access onto the pitches is very good. The area around here is well worth exploring some really lovely places on the edge of "The Lakes" Penrith & Carlisle are not far away either. Well worth a visit!

FIRST TIMERS

Motorhome trialists who travelled 15 minutes from home for one night. Rained all the time but loved it and everything works! Very friendly hosts and easy site to use with more than adequate facilities. A warm welcome from three lovely farm dogs
