Another excellent stay

After a last minute change of plan over the Easter weekend as the forecast was so bad in Pembrokeshire, we decided to come up to Cumbria (from Bristol) to visit my parents in Penrith and enjoy the North Lakes (and better forecast) as we know it's much quieter over Bank Holidays than in the National Park. We stayed 2 years ago when we first converted our campervan, the first site we have returned to! it had been wet but with mats on the corner as you turn into the further field, absolutely no access problems as so flat. Ian was also alternating the two fields, it's nice there is so much space and a fabulous view towards Blencathra. Ian keeps the fields well mown. As we're self sufficient with solar we don't need EHU so the "no hook up price" (currently £16) is very appealing for us. Even end of March in showery conditions our solar worked fine as there is no tree cover. we remained fully topped up over 3 days. Very fair pricing with "reasonable use" EHU too. We had our bikes and it's an easy ride into Penrith but the attraction are the lovely lanes in all directions (flat out towards Silloth), not busy. We rode to Caldbeck for a walk and lunch with family, and also a nice circuit to Greystoke when we arrived. On Sunday we had a fabulous time at the Boot and Shoe Inn at Greystoke that has a (free) live band on every Sunday afternoon 4-6.30. Many walks and it's great to chill at the campsite. love the bonus of a very clean toilet in the yard, and properly organised recycling. Worth staying for longer than just a "stopover" when travelling. We will be back.

Great location near M6

We have just stayed one night en route to Scotland. Lovely site and plenty of space to pitch. Access for our twin axle was a bit tight at the gated entrance off a narrow lane, but we managed fine. Will certainly use again, and hopefully spend longer in the area.

Pretty and quiet site

We spent a couple of days here in May 2022 as a start to the holiday year. It's a lovely quiet site with plenty of space across two paddocks so you can choose where you park up. The grounds are well kept, with trees and fields surrounding the site. The owners have provided recycling bins for all the different rubbish you may generate. Getting to the site was simple with easy access from M6 but far enough away so the only noise is the wildlife or passing tractors! Lovely to see the resident hens on site as well. It's in a great spot for visiting the local area, we spent time at Dalemain Mansion and then shopping in Penrith. The local pub The Sun Inn at Newton Reigny is excellent but please note they are no longer part of the DINE scheme, it's very popular so book ahead. We recommend staying here and hope to do so again ourselves in future.

Short stay at Town End Cottage CL

This is a very well maintained, quiet and spacious site, with easy access from the M6. I stayed for 3 nights, using it as a base to visit relatives living locally, but equally it is very handy for the North Lakes and the Eden valley. I'd have no hesitation in booking again.

Well kept and tidy CL

This is the 3rd time we have stayed at this site. We usually stay here when heading south to the ferries as its so convenient for the M6. This year we were heading home from the south. We really should spend more than one night as its a great CL with plenty to do in the area. As usual the grass was freshly cut, the pitches are a good size and the stay was relaxing. There is the odd tractor going up the the nearby farm and depending on when you stay you may not even hear one. What more can I say, we will stay here again and would recommend it to others.

The best CL we have ever stayed on.

We have returned from a week away at this CL during the half term holiday. The CL owner greeted us on the first day with a warm and friendly welcome. Siting was really easy with the field being so flat and loads of space for us to pick our own pitch. The site is absolutely beautiful with lovely views all around and extremely peaceful with nothing but farming and the sounds of nature. The upkeep of the site was second to none, very clean, very tidy and very Covid safe with plenty of space for children to play safely. Our daughter started calling it her garden, and our son perfected his bike riding skills well away from other caravans. We also enjoyed a walk around the perimeter of the site each night and got to watch the most stunning sunsets. We bought fresh eggs most days as they have free range chickens on site (some of the nicest eggs we have ever had), the chickens are no bother and there was no mess left from them at all. We were very lucky with the weather, but even on the day it rained the field stayed very strong and firm. Even if it had been typical British rainy weather all week we would have still loved being on this site and staying in the caravan. Something to note if you are coming with children - there is a near by open air heated swimming pool. Unfortunately we only found out towards the end of the holiday so didn't get chance to try it out, but it sounds as though it may be worth packing your swimming kit - we will next time as we will most certainly be returning to this site. A huge and massive thank you to the owners, we have already recommended your site to lots of our caravanning friends.

Tranquil and not far from M6

Lovely site. Plenty of room to pitch 5 vans easy manoeuvring. You must arrive in the described way otherwise you will get stuck! We missed the sign about ringing on arrival and seemed to be no one at the house. The chickens checked us out and I think we passed. Site is flat and wide. Lovely views and dark skies. No noise except the odd tractor passing but not disturbing. Very near to Bunkers Hill where you can get fresh pure natural milk. Also their eggs and a selection of cheeses and other farm produce. Sorry but Town End Cottage do eggs too. Not far to Penrith’s lovely shopping centre with Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s. The castle is worth exploring. Also Brougham Castle is nearby. Not too far to Appleby with its lovely independent shops. The other way is Keswick also worth visiting. All the Lake District is accessible. I could go on and on. We will be returning, very surprised we were the only van that weekend.

I think we chose a bad weekend!!

Reading the other reviews if this CL I think we may have chosen a bad weekend....not aided by the appalling weather!! We arrived late Saturday afternoon on our return from Scotland, fortunately we have a Caravan Club satnav with sites programmed in, as only saw one sign to CL as we approached it. Nobody met us on arrival, we had to go and search out owners in the nearby cottage to find out where to pitch in the VERY wet field ( caused by the torrential overnight rain they'd had, which continued that night and all the following day!) I think we disturbed the owner who was working on his computer...he came to door as if he wasn't expecting us - despite previous booking and email correspondence - quickly told us to go choose a pitch, briefly pointed out chemical waste disposal and waste bins and left us to it! It wasn't many minutes before we were stuck in the waterlogged field and needed to "disturb" the owner again to get some matting and assistance to get sited. He came out with some plastic matting that aided us to get to a pitch, then we never saw him again for the two nights we stayed. Fortunately we managed to hitch up and vacate the site on Monday morning with limited wheel slip and went to find the owner at the cottage to pay our fees. A pleasant lady answered the door, although again looking surprised at our presence. I advised her we were departing and asked if I could settle up with her...paid and left. I'm certain that in mid summer this could be a lovely peaceful grassy site, with chickens and fresh eggs on hand, but I have to say we were not impressed on this occasion. Will we try it again?....hmmm? Maybe if we can guarantee no rain in the weather forecast!!

Lovely CL handy for motorway and north lakes and amazing value

Stayed here summer 2019. Site very easy to find from M6 on easy access roads. No road noise & very tranquil. Nice pub just 20 min walk/5 min drive with good food & beers. Handy for Ullswater and north lakes attractions. The price is so cheap for what you get too. When weather dry enough they open their 2 fields, so you have a lot more space (all grass pitches so can't always open 2 fields, but top one is still spacious). You can also go anywhere in the big field for privacy if you can go without electric. Nice countryside views. The toilet is in an outhouse away from field so private and is clean - door shuts so not spidery! No showers so need own. Choice of books available too. Chickens roam free in the field all day, which we found cute but they do come round the van begging so not for you if you don't like chickens. They left a lot of poo around though which may have become a bit smelly if we had stayed for longer, but we loved them. Grass just mowed when we were there and owners said they rarely have issues with soft ground (despite being in Cumbria!) All in all a little gem at a great price - we will be back.

Spacious Cl with entertaining chickens

A large CL with electric hook up points along a fence line in the centre. The chickens were a great source of entertainment! Fresh water was from a tap near the entrance and the chemical toilet point behind a gate and near the toilet for use by motorhomers/caravaners. The grass was short and the entire site looked well cared for. We stayed here for ease of access to the Skelton Agricultural Show. We found a circular walk to do that was slightly over grown, and attempted another which a farmer advised us not to do (it went through his farm yard so maybe not keen to encourage walkers or else it really was a walk that had not been maintained) - nothing to do with the CL but for information really. The Cl was peaceful and a lovely place to stay.
