Slightly Disappointed Unfortunately

We originally booked for 7 nights at Uplands but after contacting Clare & Colin we were able to start the break three days early. We weren’t blessed with very good weather unfortunately as it rained on nine of the ten days which as it happened turned out to be a good thing as we felt there was no real space to sit out comfortably after the caravan (average length single axle), car and porch awning were set up. We can understand why it’s not been done but Uplands really need to change the photos on the CAMC listing as our pitch which was on the right at the bottom of the drive is not now grass as shown. This grass has been removed and replaced with a full hard standing for two pitches. It is not gravelled however, it is a compacted hardcore with some rather large sharp stones on top - our awning carpet has been damaged by a couple of these and they really are very hard and sharp underfoot. Due to the rain, we ended up treading in red mud from the the hard standing into the caravan. We do feel a little misled as the pictures on the listing don’t show it as it really is. Everything else is positive with the ‘Stable’ which is the washroom block being immaculately kept and a bit of luxury for a CL. The Exeter Inn is a few yards down the road and the food is excellent there - we also visited The Bell at Chittlehampton which was lovely also and has a much larger menu than the Exeter Inn. For Golfers, the Highbullen Hotel Golf & Country Club is half a mile down the road but due to development of 58 holiday lodges, this is only a 9 hole course now which is across the road from the hotel. Be aware that it is a half mile walk to the first tee because of this! Surrounding roads are very narrow but there are plenty of passing places so get used to stopping regularly to let vehicles pass, but this is the same in many counties and certainly not unique to Devon. We shopped in Barnstaple which is around half an hour away although there is small community shop in the village for essentials and a few houses have eggs for sale at the end of their drives with honesty boxes - lovely golden yolks! There is a lovely dog walk mown into the tall grass on the hill in front of the pitches which our Labrador loved! In conclusion, it is a lovely quiet site with immaculate facilities and really friendly owners, just make sure you ask for one of the better pitches.
