Great little CL with good public transport

Stayed for two nights and used bus route just outside site - buses to Derby, Matlock and Bakewell. Site is clean and tidy with everything you need. Check in, at electric gates, was smooth and although never saw hosts, they were always on had (text) to answer any questions/sort issues. Needed extension to reach EHU (pitch 4) and they offered one but carry one, so didn’t need. We will use this CL again!

I’ll be back

This was my first visit and won’t be the last. Fitted it in, not 100% certain what to expect, on a tour around. Once there I extended my stay. It’s great for walking, on the Amber Valley Trail no5. Bus stop outside the site can take you to Crich & back and elsewhere. I choose to walk both ways taking in the Cromford canal and Fritchley tunnel. Was a days walk to the Crich Stand memorial and back. Many other routes to check out though both short and long. Small newsagent & emergency supplies a short walk down the road. Views from the pitches are second to none, and worth booking for them alone. Lovely friendly owners.

Excellent CL!

This CL is excellent. It's spacious, clean and has wide reaching views. The owners are very friendly and helpful and when we had a bit of a problem with the timing of a funeral clashing with our time to leave the site Ruth was very understanding and allowed us to stay a few hours longer on site. Thank you Ruth! The site is close to the A38 and A610 and access is good even with our 8ft caravan. There are keypad operated electric gates on entry giving a little more peace of mind and security. The pitches are gravelled hardstanding and 3 are slightly elevated giving the views. The "facilities" area; water, waste, elsan etc, is spotlessly clean and spacious. The site is within easy striking distance of Crich, Matlock and Nottingham and we can thoroughly recommend the Black Boy Inn at Heage which for some, (sadly not us theses days!), would be within walking distance. The only ever so slight downside was the traffic noise from the A38 for the first night but we found it much quieter once the wind changed direction. Don't let this put you off though as it's a great CL to use as a base for the area and I'm sure we will return.

Perfect C.L.

Very large spacious site with generous room between each hard standing. Extensive views over open countryside. Site is maintained to a very high standard and has a security gate making it very secure. The owner lives on site and is very friendly and helpful. Lots of handy dog walks from the site with plenty of space for our very active spaniel. Being a CL there is naturally no toilet or shower but we prefer to use our own, especially in the current Covid pandemic. We came across it by chance needing to visit relatives in the area and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended, this is amongst the very top of C.L.s

We Will Return

A lovely site that has stunning views, Ripley is an easy walk to with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants and plenty of walks around the area. The owner was very helpful with tips on how to reach the site and very welcoming on arrival. We were looking for a site that was not too far to drive to on a Friday afternoon after work just for the weekend and I think we have found our "go to" site and unwind for a couple of days. SCENIC CL

A gem of a campsite, the owners Ruth and Ian are friendly and super helpful. Our second visit to this lovely CL, easy check in and good access to all the level pitches. all within walking distant to local pubs. Superb walks and good cycling routes.Again we enjoyed the SCENIC views of the countryside and nice to see Crich stand lit up at night.

Scenic CL: with great views

Spent 4 days at Upper Hartshay Farm in mid August whilst visiting friends who live in Belper. Had high winds on the first night from one of the storms, but as the site slopes down ( the hardstandings had been recently re-levelled so the pitch we were on, Pitch1 was flat), we were reasonably sheltered. The views over the valley are spectacular, and the lighthouse-like beacon on Crich Stand (the memorial to the Sherwood Foresters) on the horizon is hauntingly eerie but beautiful. Our friends came and collected us every day (thanks to Ruth for opening the security gates for them each time!), so we didn't try any of the public transport links. However, there are bus stops nearby. Meal on our last night at the Black Boy pub was excellent, with a good selection of ales as well. Facilities on site are well laid out, and were close to us on Pitch 1. Overall an excellent CL, which we will no doubt use again next year when visiting our friends. Thanks Ruth. C & C

Peaceful and Welcoming

Stunning views, warm welcome by Ruth. Immacately kept. The children and dog were made to feel very welcome and the dog walk was very pleasant, overlooking the valley. Buses frequent and easy to use. Drivers very friendly and helpful. Ripley within easy walking distance. On a rainy day we played badminton and went swimming at Ripley Leisure Centre and as a bonus made use of the showers! Crich Tramway Museum definitely worth a visit. Had a great time at this site despite the rainy weather.

Peaceful Stay

My review is a little late, we visited for 5 nights at the end of the last May Bank Holiday. Beautiful, clean and well set out site. Warm welcome from Ruth and Ian which was nice. Electric operated security gates gives piece of mind when on/off the site and welcomed. When we arrived the grass on the side pitches was a little long, but not an issue Ian kindly mowed the following morning which was helpful for setting up our awning. Lots of places of interest within easy driving distance include Carssington Water, Poole's Cavern, Buxton to name a few. There is a convenience store within a 20 minute or so walk and by car there is Morrison's and Sainsbury's. On the site, it's peaceful and the scenery is really stunning, perfect location to switch off and relax. The rubbish, water and waste area is nicely fenced off and kept immaculate. Recycling facilities too. Ruth is a fountain of knowledge of good places to go including local places to eat/drink, we went to a pub she recommended on our 1st night and was a really good choice. One useful word of warning though, the site info does say arrival after 1pm, it's a good idea to follow that because the access in from the main road is a single track road to the electric gates - there is no room for passing vehicles so if you try to arrive early be warned one person will HAVE to reverse. It's also worth bearing in mind that coming from Ripley direction the CL sign does come upon you quite quickly (you come over the bridge over the main A road as on the directions provided and round a sweeping bend and the turning is just beyond a stone wall. Interestingly there is no CL sign coming from the other direction. Would have no hesitation returning to Upper Hartshay, the warm welcome and lovely site and bonus of their beautiful dogs which we had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay. We look forward to seeing you again in the not too distance future Ruth & Ian
