A proper CL

We stopped here while breaking a journey to France. It also had added advantage of being close to our son who lives in Ashbourne. The site is quiet and well maintained. Mrs White ( who took over the site a couple of years ago) is very welcoming. The facilities are what you would expect from a CL( not the modern thing of fully serviced and toilet and shower block). So if you want peace and quiet and access to the Peak District this is the site for you.

Little Gem

We had planned a longish trip to Scotland before the virus started ramping up so we changed our minds to use hotels. This changed again when a certain Scots lady started to lock down Scotland. My wife and daughter had stayed at Woodside Farm some weeks ago and raved about the place so a quick call and off we went. There are 5 pitches, No 3 is the choice one as the tap is right by the pitch so you can have a direct water supply. The grass was getting a bit long but not a problem and the site was kept neat and tidy. A credit to Mr Mrs Billings who were always busy in the farm even though she is awaiting a new arrival in November. Just in time for lambing. No need to repeat all that has been said about the concrete works, its there, its has no effect on the site save for a few, and l mean few lorries driving past Monday to Friday. Loads to see and do in the area but we stayed local, been there, seen it, done it. Well apart from Wirksworth. The local preserved railway is well worth a visit and they are hosting a GWR tank engine from October. Great site, great people.

Back again :)

We’ve returned again to this charming little cl and in these strange COVID times found a small piece of normality. The site is peaceful and convenient to Ashbourne and Carsington water . Further afield is Matlock, Rowsley and Bakewell. There is a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Ashbourne and the CAMC Carsington site is nearby for replacement gas canisters. I like this site for its simplicity. There are 2 hardstanding pitches , 3 grass and taps between each 2 pitches, 16 amp hookup, easy access from the road and fresh eggs available . There is information available by the gate and if you require more information the site owners John and Rose are very helpful. We will definitely return again.( If you look on google earth there is a cement works nearby but it really doesn’t impact on your stay as the lorries go the other way and there is no noise pollution from them.)

Lovely little site

We have just returned home from a long weekend at this site. It’s very well maintained and the owner Mr Billings is friendly and helpful. We found the pitches were well spaced out with a pleasant outlook. Although there is a nearby cement works we didn’t find the noise too intrusive and was actually helpful as we followed the cement work signs to get to the CL. The site is conveniently situated for Carsington waters and Ashbourne, If you drive a little further you can explore Bakewell, Chatsworth and Matlock. We had an excellent time despite the weather and can’t wait too visit again.

Tranquility in Hulland Ward

We have visited this site three times now, once in October 2017, Easter this year and again in mid-August. Nice easy access, very friendly and helpful couple. Water taps between two pitches very useful, reliable 16amp electricity supply. There is a box on site with lots of information on what to see and do around the area. When we visited at Easter, on Easter Monday we awoke to snow and when we got our 4x4 stuck, Mr Billings came with his tractor and towed the car out and then the caravan, we hadn’t approached him for help he came to offer help. Yes, other people have commented about the concrete works, but this didn’t bother us at all, you can’t expect there to be no noise at all when the CL is close to a road. This is a working farm so there are going to be noises associated with that, this is what the countryside is all about. We certainly will return as it is near enough to home for a long weekend and easy to visit the surrounding area.

well located for Derbyshire base

A lovely little cl site, well positioned for touring round Derbyshire and the dales. The entrance to the site is easy to find and access is very good. A little post box is sited by the gate with loads of information leaflets. Owner is very nice and welcoming, came to see us the first night and didnt see him again until just as we were leaving. The quarry/concrete works just up the road didnt bother us but if you are looking for total peace and quiet you wont find it during the day, a lot of road noise in daytime along with noise from the farm. Evenings were very quiet though so no issues there. Lots of sheep around so if your dogs are reactive to livestock you will have a problem. The grass could have been cut more regularly and cleaned away as well. It was a little problematic finding yourself covered in long grass cuttings as the grass was always wet and long. lovely areas to walk but be aware that although there are grass verges the traffic also thunders past as you are walking, cars as well as the lorries. We will visit again. The site also needs updating as the prices are now £12 per night for 2 adults.

Lovely site

We stayed her for a week in July 2018. Great little site close to Ashbourne, Matlock Bath and Wirksworth. Having a water tap between each pitch was very convenient. The owner was helpful, available but not intrusive. The location is close to the concrete works on Smith-Hall Lane, but don’t worry, we didn’t hear any noise, in fact the site is very peaceful. The cost is £12.00 per night, not £10.00 as stated here, but is still great value and we would definitely use this site again if visiting the area or for a stop-over.

A gem

We booked here whilst Mr Billings was away but he told us what to do when we got here. Very easy to find with a big entrance so your rig is not sticking out into the road while you open the gate. The chemical waste just off from the gate and fresh eggs just outside the gate. First we set up on pitch 2 but the slope at the back was a bit too much so we recanped to pitche 5 which was better though the front of the caravan was nearly to the ground. One tap for each two pitches which was good with plenty of space between. Uphill view across a small field to the woods and side view to the right. Although there is an aggregate plant about 400 yards up the road you can't see it and we never heard any noise and 99% of the traffic went the other way and not past the site. The location is great for all the places you want to visit e.g. Bakewell with its market day on Monday, Buxton, Ashbourne, Belper, Matlock to name but a few. We found an idyllic little place called Milldale with a stream, totally unexpected and on another trip came across Hettys Tea Shop in Froghall. We had perfect weather which does help. We would come back if in the area again.

Ideal site - warm welcome

We visited this CL originally for 10 nights 19th May - 29th May. Unfortunately after travelling from Cornwall we broke down 3 miles from the site and had to be recovered there by Greenflag. We let Mr Billings know and he came out to check we were ok.and offered to get us any essentials like milk etc. The site was lovely, flat, quiet and well kept with very easy access. There is a convenient shared water supply between two caravan pitches and reliable 16 amp electrics. There is a convenient wooded dog walk nearby (access by a short roadside grass verge which Mr Billings kept trimmed). Both Mr and Mrs Billings were very friendly and helpful. We had to extend our stay by 9 days until 7th June awaiting a spare part for our car. In all, we spent 19 enjoyable nights there. The CL is within easy reach of Matlock Bath (Heights of Abraham cable car), Cromford Canal, Crich Tram Museum, as well as the magnificent Peak District. We would highly recommend this CL. We definitely hope to return at a future date (without the car trauma!)
