First visit to Berwick

We have just returned from 6 nights at Berwick Seaview and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The train line does run just behind the site and we were pitched just in front of it but after a while you don’t really notice the trains too much. Also the site is strangely situated in a housing estate with a football pitch in front of the site where surprisingly people play football !? but we looked on Google earth and were aware of these factors before booking. What more than makes up for these two slight negatives is the view from the site out over the estuary and the sea beyond the pier and lighthouse with ever-changing views depending on the tide. Our motorhome is less than 6m so we didn’t really find any difficulty manoeuvring and didn’t really feel that the pitches were close together but if you have one of the bigger motorhomes or a large caravan and car I can see why some people say it’s tight. The site is well placed for easy access to Berwick town on foot or by bus which stops just at the foot of the drive. A short walk away is Spittal promenade and beach which is dog friendly there is an ice cream shop and cafe too with public toilets if your desperate! The site is tidy and well maintained by the hardworking friendly wardens the amenities block is clean and tidy maybe if you’re being picky it could benefit from a facelift that said there is nothing to really complain about it is a campsite after all. This was our first visit and it won’t be our last we loved it.

Not Good - Worst Site So Far

This site has been squeezed in between a football pitch, a housing estate and the main east coast rail line. We arrived around 4pm and although there were six available pitches, there was only one that we could fit on as all of the remaining pitches were far too short. Due to a bike rack, we measured 7.4m which isn't usually hugely excessive. The whole site felt very cramped and well below the standard that we have experienced elsewhere. The pitch that we were on was on grass, parallel to and within 6m of the rail line and on quite a slope. The trains were fast and frequent up until 11pm. Dogs are welcomed but there are no facilities available on site. There is however a small grass area outside of the entrance gate with a dog bin. There is a nice view of the pier and the beach which is dog friendly but this view is not visible from all pitches. Needless to say, we certainly wouldn't come back to this site again.

Late Summer Break

Had a lovely break here, would recommend yes there are trains running close to the site but they've gone in 5 seconds if that. no less annoying than yappy dogs barking. The town is a 15 minute walk away, some lovely places to eat would recommend Limoncello. Only a 40 min train journey into Edinburgh if you fancy as well. The pitches beginning with 7 were the best ones with lovely sea views. With this site patience is your friend, don't go charging down a road as there are a lot of dead ends, unless your ace at reversing. Do your homework first. :-)

Amazing view

Well kept site with regular bus to Berwick from foot of driveway. Good shower block and facilities. Nice to see a small space for tents but happier now to enjoy the comforts of our van! I quite like to hear trains passing infrequently so not an issue. Will come again.

Fabulous Views

Fortunate to pitch with probably one of the best views we’ve ever had. Easy walking in to Berwick and to the bus stop for the Holy Island service (Route no. 477) - check internet for times or there’s a useful App which seems more accurate. A site we have no hesitation in recommending - wardens well worth a mention, very helpful, particularly when we had a fuse go on our camper and whilst we have spares, unfortunately not the one we needed. In our experience it’s rare to find an unhelpful warden. Thanks to all the hard working CMC wardens.

Beautiful Views

We stayed at Berwick Seaview site for 9 nights including over the August Bank holiday weekend. It is clearly a popular site and was full or nearly full for most of our stay. Pitches were limited on our arrival and the site is terraced, long and thin and not the easiest to negotiate. The wardens offer sound advice on which pitches are available and how to negotiate the site so you don’t end up down a dead end. We were on the top terrace and had wonderful views across the harbour and out to sea. This came at a cost though as we were beside the train line which has regular trains from early morning to about 11.00 at night. We didn’t find this too intrusive though. Our pitch overlooked a local football pitch and this was where most of our disturbances came from on an evening. Boys/ young men playing football was fine and it was quite nice to see young people enjoying themselves however, one evening there was a training session with teenagers and the language, screamed at the top of their voices, was outrageous! This is not within the sites ability to monitor but is something to be aware of especially if you have children with you. The site is kept neat and tidy but the pitches are very close together leaving a 3 ft strip of grass to sit on if you have an awning. The facilities were spotless but rather tired and in need of an upgrade. The site is in the middle of a housing estate and a short walk into the town which is lovely with lots to see and do. It is also a very short walk to a beautiful dog friendly beach where you can walk for miles. Ice cream on the prom is a must. Coast line nearby is beautiful, especially St Abbs. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay however we would be reluctant to return as the site is too busy/ crushed/ noisy for our tastes.

Pleasantly surprised

We stopped here on our way up to Edinburgh, only stayed one night but absolutely loved it, wardens were very friendly and helpful explaining all about how to access the different parts of the site, we had a fantastic view of the waterfront, not lucky enough to see dolphins but they had been seen the day before! The site is on a gradient but most of the pitches are level, it is a narrow site and you need to listen to the wardens and read the signs or you could end up struggling to turn around,yes there is some train noise but not enough to be of concern. We will definitely be back as the town itself is very beautiful and has plenty to offer,the site is only a short walk from the town and also from a lovely dog friendly beach, plus we would like to see the dolphins!

Worst site I’ve ever been on…..

The noisiest site I’ve ever stayed on, main east coast train line is about 20ft from the back of your caravan if your unlucky enough to pitch up on one of the top ones, that’s was all that was left when we arrived, trains hurtling by at 125mph just feet from your caravan, 1st one at 6.15 am last one 11.30pm every 10mins duration , site very poorly set out, on a steep hill, lots of dead ends that it you go into to initially to find a pitch you have to reverse out off, pitches very short, resulting in the narrowest access roads I’ve seen on a site…. Definitely won’t be back here

Fabulous, we will return

A short drive from the River Breamish site saw us pitched up at the Berwick Seaview site, the third stop on our tour. Our pitch, 89, had views of the lighthouse, and a large area of grass in front of us. During our stay we both walked (15/20 minutes) and caught the bus (stop at site entrance) in and out of Berwick, soaking up the history, and enjoying meals out. We also walked down to Spittal beach, which was a leisurely 5 minutes. The Wardens were very friendly and helpful. We loved it at this site, and will definitely return.

Spent 3 nights as part of our Northumbria tour in July. Very easy to find as very close to the A1 and other main routes. Site is accessed via a steep, though short, drive (be aware if you have a long over-hang beyond your rear axle- we witnessed several caravans grounding as they started to make the climb up to reception). We generally do not comment upon the wardens as we feel this is not helpful; however in this instance it was refreshing to be greeted by a younger couple with enthusiasm, who were chatty and helpful throughout our stay. There are some biodiversity 'no mow' zones sensible placed around the site creating the natural habitat. This is the correct balance unlike Teeside Barnard Castle who seem to be leaving wide expanses of 'no mow' zones everywhere; this makes the site look untidy and unkempt. Site is terraced, therefore most pitches are afforded an ever changing view across the North Sea and the Estuary, or in the other direction, towards the town/railway viaduct. Yes, the site is bordered by the East Coast Main Line and we enjoyed seeing and hearing the trains go by, but can appreciate this may be an annoyance to others. They do cease overnight and the railway certainly did not disturb our stay or sleep. There is a bus stop at the site entrance which takes you into Berwick town (day rover was £3.00 per adult, no charge for the dog) or to Spittal in the opposite direction. Nearer to the site there are a couple of pubs, a small convenience shop in Spittal and a walk along the green at the seafront takes you to a chinese restaurant and other eateries. You can walk into town from the site - 30 minutes at an easy pace. A walk to the seafront is approx 5 minutes and further along at Spittal there are sandy beaches, where dogs are allowed, plus a cafe/ice cream outlet. Overall, we enjoyed out stay and hope to return.
