Good for families

Shame about the Travellers!

We arrived on Sunday 16th June. Lovely staff member advised us on a nice quiet pitch ( we haven't stayed here for a few years). Pitched up and had a walk round. We noticed several caravans of the same make pitched by the children's play area. After seeing several Van's coming and going with men we realised they were traveller families. I have no problem with anyone as long as they abide by the rules, something Travelling families find difficult. The Van's were driving round the site offering people various boxes of gardening equipment and one even offered a generator! The toilets were cleaned and within half an hour the children were using the ladies as a play area, running up and down screaming and banging doors and toilet seats. The toilets were littered with knickers, bras, shampoo, toilet paper, wipes and dirty nappies. We reported this, the poor couple running the site were tearing their hair out. The atmosphere was tense at best all weekend. Having read Google reviews this seems to have happened in previous years. We are really worried that the relaxed rules allowing commercial vehicles will mean travellers are welcomed at all the club sites. We will not be renewing our membership if this is the case! So in all, the site is in a great location, have a great team running the site and would be great if travelling families not permitted which is the case at most caravan sites.

The area where the travellers were pitched is normally the area we'd try and get a pitch, but when we arrived there was around a dozen traveller vans up there spread out leaving probably every alternate pitch empty so we headed to the area to the right as you enter the site. Strangely as had the majority of other people. Can only comment on what we saw which was the ladies toilets a mess on the Tuesday morning, and quite a few bottles of shower gel etc lined up by the sinks that people had obviously moved. The rest of the week they were tidy. My husband said the gents were fine. Yes lots of vans 'coming and going' throughout the day but they didnt drive around the area we were. Did see washing lines up strung between trees which i thought was against the rules. Unfortunately travellers come with a preconceived 'reputation' but to be fair the wardens had had words when it was appropriate and according to one they were very tidy and werent leaving any mess/rubbish around. And as this is a members only site theres not a lot anyone can do but i didnt envy the wardens their job one bit last week!!

Both my wife and I were on site for the weekend in question, I must admit we were very surprised when the travellers arrived, I counted seven twin axle caravans in their group with associated transit vans. We found it quite disconcerting that the travellers clearly had no respect whatsoever for the site facilities. It was also quite apparent they were conducting work activities in the surrounding area as the vans were constantly coming and going and continually moving items between each other.

The club must look at this issue and make amendments to the rules to avoid this type of occurence. Many private sites do not allow commercial vehicles particularly those with sign writing, many also stipulate that groups of vehicles are not allowed, i.e. they would not allow seven travellers vans on site together. I feel very sorry for the site wardens as they were placed in a bad position. We will not be returning to this site.

I wholeheartedly agree that this behaviour is not welcome on our sites but being someone who drives a commercial vehicle as my everyday vehicle because with two kids, three dogs and a disabled wife there just isn't a car big enough to comfortably carry all we take with us when leaving our house. Not everyone towing a caravan with a van is a traveller and I for one would hate to not have the opportunity and peace of mind that staying in some of the lovely and safe sites that the club offer. I would hope the club can find a way to eradicate this without penalising people like us.
