Great for any lovers of the outdoors

Stayed here in March 2024 for our first weekend of the season. Lady on reception (sorry I didn’t get her name) was very helpful in suggesting and recommending pitches. Pitches are really well set out and very spacious and the wardens do a great job keeping the site clean. We found a suitable pitch and the gentleman walked up from reception to give us a barrier key to save us the walk back down as it was raining. The site has great access to Carsington Water. We walked the full trail round which works out about 8 ish miles and is largely on gravel tracks. The site is very quiet in the evenings and there is a fish and chip van which visits the site as well as a pizza van. On different evenings if you want a night off cooking. We didn’t try them ourselves but seems a very good option to have. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would definitely return

First Break of the year

This was our first trip of the year in March,Would have liked a good walk around the reservoir but unfortunately the recent wet weather had made the paths very wet and muddy. I did venture onto some of the trails with my mountain bike the views are excellent. The site is in a beautiful location easy access to carsington water and the high peak trail. All in all It was a nice relaxing week will return at a different time of year when hopefully things will be a lot drier.

Beautiful

First time we travelled and stayed here. Will definitely go back. The site is beautiful and the location is stunning and peaceful. The staff are very helpful and facilities are good. Highly recommend a walk around Carsington Water as a lovely steady walk, 7.5 miles round the lake. Only advice would be for the site to level the services pitches area as the slope front to back is very steep. If staying on this are you will definitely need blocks until they level it better.

Peaceful stay

my husband and I spent 4 nights here in October. Although it is quite a large site and was busy, we found it peaceful, with the pitches grouped into discreet areas. The shower block was modern with ample facilities. I would prefer a flexible shower head, but these seem to be available only in the disabled showers. The nearby watersports centre is within 2 miles and we had a lovely breakfast there overlooking the water. My husband hired a boat for trout fishing, whilst I launched my own paddleboard. Paddleboards , kayaks and also bikes are available for hire. We cycled around the reservoir and found the paths were fine for our 20 inch wheels. We also cycled on the Tissington trail a short drive away, which is fairly flat and well surfaced. the Barley mow pub at Kirk Ireton was our favourite, selling excellent beers (4 in total including 2 from Thornbridge brewery in Bakewell) and serving food on Saturday and Sunday (pre booking recommended). We cycled there from the site , approx 2 miles with some inclines. This area is just outside the peak district national park, but there is still some really nice countryside to explore, whilst not being overly touristy.

Thanks

Excellent wardens and great location - Carsington Water is a fantastic facility and good for cycling around although hilly in places. Plenty to do locally and good pub nearby "Black Horse Inn" - with reasonable prices and good food. Will go to this site again.

Top Marks!

We need to start by saying a huge THANK YOU to Mark the warden and his wife. We stayed at Carsington Friday to Sunday and on arrival to our pitch at around 5.30pm the caravan wouldn't unhitch, disaster! I went to ask the wardens for help and Mark came along to investigate. Yep, the caravan was definitely well and truly stuck onto the car! Mark rang an engineer for advice and we tried tirelessly to unhitch but it wasn't budging. Mark was so helpful and understanding, he allowed us to pitch up across a pitch and a parking space still attached over night with an action plan for the morning. Sure enough true to his word Mark was there in the morning for round two. Marks wife also came to check the kids were ok and offered them a couple of places they could wait in the warm while we tried to unhitch. Finally, after nearly two hours, success!! An event that could have easily ruined our weekend turned it into a very memorable one. It was a real team effort but we couldn't have done it without Mark. Every site needs a Mark! Thank you. Quiet during the week

We stayed Monday to Friday in August. We were surprised at how empty the site was but it meant it was lovely and quiet. I’m sure it’s very different at the weekend. We took bicycles as there is a cycle path around the reservoir and access to National Cycle Routes - we went on the Tissington Trail. There are not any pubs or food shops within walking distance so you need to be self-sufficient or have transport. Some food vans come on site but didn’t while we were there. Some of the pitches (especially in the serviced pitches area) were sloping (some in two directions) so you’re likely to need ramps. Some long, twin axle caravans struggled to get level. Outside of the serviced area, the pitches looked more level. The site is set in woodland and there is no noise from traffic. We would return. We can’t understand why it was so empty.

Excellent Site

Booked 3 nights. Two adults, two children. Needed accesible pitch with hardstanding. Superb location of accessible pitch opposite shower block. Weather dry, pitch was fine. Others who had been during earlier heavy downpour said it had been flooded in some areas. Not when we were there though. We packed late on 3rd night as heavy downpour predicted and we didn't fancy our chsnces packing away drenched awning with 2 kids. Left around 11.30pm. No issue. Security tags to get onsite provided security and peace of mind with secure deposit box for checkout. Very quiet. Great facilities. Two children's areas. We were conscious they were near other campers so limited play. (No footballs). Didn't take bikes but will next time as near to Carsington Water sports where we spent our days. Lovely walk in surrounding woods. Not wheelchair accessible but good steps with rails. Showering/Washing facilities great. Clean. Pot washing facilities good. We used indoor, had to queue as only space for 2. But that wasn't an issue. Only downside was no disabled assisted shower for our son other than in main block ladies (Dad wasnt with us, so not sure if one in mens). So he had to come in ladies with me. That was OK as he's 10 but not ideal for when he is older. Would prefer separate unisex accessible shower. Visiting burger van was very welcome after day kayaking. Great value/quality. Warden Lois was lovely and very helpful. Will definitely stay again.

Excellent site

Excellent site with welcoming staff. Quieter in the week with more families on the weekend. A lovely relaxed and safe feel to the site. Good quality food outlets invited into the site on certain days which were a welcome surprise. I’ve already recommended the site to friends and will definitely return in the future.

Only one night

We stayed here for one night in mid- May to break our journey to the Peak District. The site was very quiet and peaceful, set in trees and we chose a pitch with a view of the Reservoir. The facilities were clean. We had a lovely walk along the dam path to the Carsington Visitor Centre. We will be back to stay for longer.
