As the saying goes one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Some will love it, others hate it and everything in between. Park Coppice is very different to the run of the mill, bowling green flat, regimentally arranged pitches which could be anywhere you find on a typical Caravan Club site. So I will try to stick mainly to the facts. The approach on the A5084 from the A580, which is the recommended route, is twisty, undulating and quite narrow in places. Meet another van or motorhome coming the opposite way (as we did) and life can suddenly become very interesting. The journey home leaving early was quieter, which made things a bit easier. With such a road though I find it strange the site allow arrivals from 10am. Once on site the check in, with the usual friendly welcoming staff is straightforward enough. Finding a suitable pitch less so. Pitches vary considerably in size, ease of access and degree of slope. Yes, there are some huge, fairly level ones but a fair number slope in various directions. Levelling blocks are a must-have bit of kit. Driving all the way round to have a look is not a good idea if this is your first visit. If you see a reasonable pitch grab it. You might not find it again. With that in mind it is worth studying both the site layout plan and Google Earth street view before you travel to get some idea what you are up against. It is also worth considering where the service points are. Lugging 40l of water up hill is not easy. The lake is 5-10 minutes walk from the site, depending where you are pitched and Coniston an easy 30 minute walk. It can also be a good walk to reception to collect your keys etc. The pitches are in woodland so it can be quite dark. But most pitches are very sheltered. You do have to put up with water dripping off the trees when it rains. Because of Covid we didn’t use the on site toilet blocks but they looked typical of CC sites. Again, depending where you pitch these can be a bit of a walk. We spent a week there and didn’t use the car once. There are so many good walks from the site and other attractions on the lake we didn’t need to. The site is full of birds and squirrels. We hung a feeder up on the first day and it was empty within an hour. Plan your visit carefully and in my opinion the site is well worth a visit, if nothing else but to experience the beauty of the Lake district. Which, in the end is why the site is as it is.
