Beautiful location, & so quiet

We discovered this site as I wanted to explore the north of the Lakes. This sight does not have facilities but that was fine with us. Its location is amazing, and so quiet. The wardens were so friendly and helpful, suggesting walks for us to do. There is a beautiful walk directly from the site, round Congra moss and up Blake Fell. Views from the top of Blake Fell were stunning. Well worth the climb. The site is also a short drive away from St Bees, which is an RSPB site. A beautiful cliff top walk to see nesting sea birds.

Campervan Visit September 2021

Excellent site which was well maintained by very friendly wardens. Pitch size variable and some pitches shaded. Very quiet and were regaled by the Tawny Owls at night. Sadly no red squirrels seen as they seem to have been put off by some of the tethered dogs! Useful information on local short walks and good access to the high fells above Cogra Moss for longer excursions. Surrounding roads relatively quiet so walking to and around Ennerdale Water was not a problem. Easy access to site as only a short distance from the main road.

amazing

so my second visit here this year and already booked for next, this is the kind of site i like very rural and quiet. you use your own facilities in you van, the way camping should be and well done for keeping this site this way. there are really good staff who are very knowable on the local area. within easy reach of Whitehaven and other local villages. the site itself is well lade out and so full of wildlife it truly amazing and together with the dedicated staff makes it a lovely place to visit. there are many lovely walks with beautiful scenery in this area really worthwhile visiting here. we have found everyone on this site each time we have come here very friendly just like all the club sites. so if you love peace and quiet with lovely walks with bundle of nature especially those crazy squirrels you will love it here.

Peaceful site

Lovely peaceful site immaculately kept by the wardens. Some of the pitches were not that big to get a 7.4 m motor home in and could imagine some larger caravans would have the same problem. Phone signal was a poor and no tv signal where we were. However the site was lovely, right by a babbling stream. We took a car and was glad of it around a lot of the narrow roads in the Lakes. The site was in a great location for the Western lakes including some of the quieter places like Ennerdale water. Also walked to Cogra Moss reservoir from the site Will definitely go again.

Ideal for caravanners

Very peaceful site but probably more suited to caravanners than motorhomers as there are only a couple of available walks which don't require road access. Worth making the trip to Loweswater for the circular walk along one side. Although peaceful, the site is very open with 3 rows of outfits facing one another. Ennerdale Craft Brewery Tap is excellent, dog friendly, and great beer and food. Again, you will need to drive to reach it, there are no pubs in easy walking distance.

First Time on non Facilities.

As previous member this was first time on non shower block site for 20+ years. Although that was not a problem using our own on board bathroom in c'van - the only gripe would be be another water service point on site or water/grey waste to each pitch would be lovely( lugging the grey waste gets heavy and constant water topping up when both showering every day). it's probably why not many families use it - a bonus for many ?? Not sure about the grass being left to be "meadow" effect around back of pitches & in the centre - it just looks messy and unkempt. There are plenty of hedgerows/meadows in surrounding area. The dog area is not very big on site - ok for first & last thing - took dog off site to the field on opposite side of road (over stile by static caravan park) to have an off the lead run. Having said that nice quiet site, no major traffic on road which passes site - just locals taking a quicker route. It was some members who drove around the site at speed (both cars & motorhomes) who should know better that were the problem. There is a walk from site to Cogra Moss reservoir which is not strenuous, drove out to Buttermere & pleasant walk around lake (last there 25+ years ago) beautiful place with new cafes now added for a much needed cuppa. Plenty to see & do in the area depends how far you wish to travel out. Friendly stand-in wardens were on site the week we were there with helpful suggestions and a cheery smile... had an enjoyable week in a beautiful part of the country.

Good Location & very peaceful

This was my first stay at Dockray & whilst I would normally prefer a site with full facilities I am glad I chose to go. The setting of the site is lovely with excellent views & it is so peaceful. There are walks directly from the site & a must visit is Ennerdale Water just a 4 mile drive to Bowness Knott car park. The car park is accessible to Motorhomes & can accommodate medium size units though it can get busy. A circuit of the lake is about 9 miles. The area is away from the main attractions of The Lakes & as a result is not as busy though it is by no means less beautiful. The site itself is well kept. There is a small dog walking area with the novelty of jumps etc. I will definitely return to further explore the area around this hidden gem.

Few days away

Lovely peaceful site and helpful staff. There are no toilet block facilities on this site which may put some people off but we didn't have any problem with it. It was good for our family but it depends what each family wants from a site. Good walking and you can cycle around the site. There maybe other cycle areas but we didn't have time to explore these. We were unfortunate that we needed some medical help however, the surgery and the chemist within the surgery in Cockermouth were excellent unlike the Boots pharmacy in Frizington. The shop sells the "around and about" maps which are great for finding walks of all sizes and abilities.

So peaceful

What a fabulous find. We are a bit reluctant to disclose how wonderful this site is for fear of it becoming so busy that we can’t return. The site is easy to find and easy to access, particularly if you follow the instructions given carefully. The wardens are super helpful and incredibly low key. The site is kept to an immaculate standard but without the constant noise of a lawnmower often found at other sites. The pitches are roomy and well spaced and the lack of facilities actually means that the footfall is probably less around the site which adds to the total peace and quiet. That said, everybody we spoke to on site were incredibly friendly and happy to share local knowledge. The area is full of things to do but on one day we ventured a bit further afield (about a 20 minute drive) and climbed Scafell Pike and on another we popped into Keswick. Cockermouth was a pleasant surprise and there were plenty of National Trust places to visit. We are not interested in TV particularly when on holiday so no idea about signal, we did however have mobile phone signal through our entire stay. Maybe the beautiful weather allowed it to work. Overall we would say that this is one of the nicest, most peaceful sites that we have visited and we will definitely be looking to book again in the near future.

Perfect Haven for Peace and Quiet

Thanks to lovely, approachable, friendly Arnie and Stelle who work all day keeping the site in tip top order without disturbing the peace and quiet. After 20+years as a CMHC member, we have just spent our 1st time staying on a site with no shower block, because of Covid we thought we'd stay somewhere quieter. Wow what a lovely surprise, after our 6 day stay of peace and quiet, we left feeling so relaxed and rested it felt as if we'd had 2 weeks holiday. We will certainly be searching out other sites with no facilities. What have we missed all these years, we are converted. Using our own facilities on board was much easier than tripping all weathers to the shower block several times a day. Please Please don't spoil these quiet retreats by installing extra facilities. We even found members staying the same time as us extremely friendly and wanting to chat. Something that doesn't happen very often at the larger sites. Heard owls softly hooting some nights, lovely, the stream babbling as it moved pasted the edge of the site, no traffic noise, lovely places to sightsee. A must is a circular drive through Whinlatter forest, Buttermere and Honister Pass. Thanks again. We will definitely return to this site, for a complete chill.
