Discourteous Staff

Loved this peaceful campsite. One of many campsites we’ve stayed at on the way to Devon. Very beautiful/quiet and safe enough to let our 17 month toddler roam. Completely let down by the staff on our last day. My husband and I like to run (taking it in turns to watch the baby). I and the baby took a shared shower after at 10:20. We were in the shower for 5 minutes when a male staff member came in and told me it was cleaning time to which I replied I’d be put in 5 minutes tops. The same member of staff jarred open the door and the window directly opposite our shower. I told the guy we were freezing and he just muttered that it was his time to clean. Nice. Baby caught a cold from a naked change. Another member of staff (female this time) then rudely told me the facilities are closed. I told her that I was sorry and I hadn’t known to which she muttered that cleaning is always 10:30. I completely understand his and her frustration but surely a sign on the door stating times of closure would help? Why is cleaning time also 10:30 when surely it’s logical to have the only facilities here closed at 11am for when the campers leave? Not to mention it’s just disgusting to rush us out by freezing us. Completely rude and unnecessary. Tainted our once lovely stay.

Love the wardens

As a frequent visitor to this site, I am astounded by some of the reviews. Yes, you have to arrive after 13:00 as most sites have the same ruling and most people have enough common sense to plan their routes to take this into account. The toilets are spotless and although the toilets may not have underfloor heating they are more than adequate to use. The current wardens have made some excellent improvements ie the waste and water area. I have always found the wardens at this site treat all visitors with dignity and respect but maybe some visitors expect to be treated as Queens or Kings on their grand tour. The idea for a code to the toilets is an excellent idea as this prevents people not booked onto the site abusing the facilities.

Another disappointing stay.

We echo the review written by “ disappointed “. We arrived at 10.30am having vacated our previous site at 9.30. We where approached by a hostile member off staff telling us we could not park our caravan on the huge empty car park for health and safety reasons !!!. We drove around and returned at the time instructed. This camp site is very convenient for us travelling to Cornwall on a regular basis, unfortunately we have experienced this behaviour before, in terms of the staffs attitude. The idea of having a code for the bathrooms is very inconvenient when travelling with small children. As a recommendation could the staff maybe access training on customer relations.

Disappointed

We have been a member of the caravan & motor home club for 26 years & have never experienced anything like this site before. We arrived early as we had been travelling over night, 11 instead of 1pm. The site was less than half full. We were advised to vacate the site & premises to return at 1pm. We did so, returning as close to time as expected after driving round for a few hours. On arrival another caravan had arrived, the couple told us they had arrived 30 mins too early but were allowed to wait on the premises (on the huge clear drive way). My husband got out the car & was told this couple will be booked in first because they arrived at the right time. Fair enough we thought. Our son was asking for the toilet & with the toilet not being set up he asked could he please have the code for the toilet as he was desperate, he was told no you can't have it until you have checked in. Absolutely disgraceful!. And why on earth they couldn't say park up and come and book in later when reception open. I spent 20 minutes of our stay picking up used cigarette stumps fr thw pitch. The manger of this site made our experience & start of our holiday very unpleasant. Regularly walking around observing what you were doing. Luckily we had only booked on here for the 1 night, we couldn't have tolerated much longer to be honest. The cleaning of the site toilets was 10.30 till 11.30, our friend who was on holiday actually took short, he has a bad bowel medical condition & was told no they will be open in an hr, he said you can use the disabled toilet, so friend asked don't you need a key, he replied yes as he smirked. Saying that the toilets were clean but very dated. If we hadn't have been tied into the policies & procedures of cancellations we would have gone elsewhere. This experience was one of our friends first caravanning experiences & we had reassure them that all sites aren't like this.

excellent value for money

Stayed for 5 nights in July 22. excellent value ,shower block outdated but spotlessly clean, good size pitches. Dont bother with the fish and chip van that visits. It doesn't do fish, just burgers and frozen chips which weren't even properly cooked.Very close to main road but little noise. Was told to fully unwind mains lead by warden which was fair enough even though many others seem to have been overlooked at various times while we were there.

Good location and nice site (can't understand all the fuss about it)

The site is very good and exceptionally well priced for somewhere with a toilet block, less than what most CLs are now going for these days. There are two areas, a huge gently sloping field area with the shower block and a second smaller area in a more secluded wooded setting. The former is in full sun all day and has a nice view across a valley to a huge woodland. There is no vegetation splitting the pitches but they are plenty big enough for privacy. It's on an exposed slope so it can get windy (but then again so can Old Hartley but that doesn't stop us staying there either). The shower block is immaculately clean and the whole site is well kept with mostly grass pitches and some hard standing. The block might be a little dated but it is kept to the very best of standards. There is a service station across the A380 accessible by a few minutes walk with a diner, McDonalds and a well stock Londis shop with a Greggs in the ESSO garage. Friday night saw a fish and chips/burger van on site. Traffic noise from the A38 is not intrusive (only the yapping dogs and thumping music were noise pollution). There isn't anything within any sort of walking distance of the site but everything you could want from beaches to towns to countryside is within reasonable driving distances. We spent 7 nights in the middle of June and did Sidmouth, Dawlish Warren, Exmouth and the Dartmoor Steam railway and river excursion. Paignton and Torquay are also within easy reach. We avoided Budleigh Salterton because it's a pebble beach and Exeter city was disappointing overall. My only complaint is about the behaviour of other Club members. There were a pair of dogs that regularly barked for long periods of time without any intervention from the owners. This included early morning and late in to the evening and for protracted periods of time. When I approached the wardens about them I was told to either find another pitch further away, not that that would have done any good, or to approach the owners myself if the dogs were causing a disturbance. I couldn't find anything on the Club website asking dog owners to be considerate and keep their dogs quiet and there was no mention of this on the information leaflet handed out on arrival. I am pretty sure if I was playing loud music in the same way I would be told to shut up or leave. Or perhaps not, as the same people got away with some thumping music until gone 1am. Perhaps it's the nature and lifestyle of some members that puts them beyond the ability to reproach them; or maybe just this particular group. I think it unacceptable that just one or two members can create so much disruption for everyone else.

Hidden gem

Booked to stay one night on the way down the Devon coastline, ended up booking for two nights and then another night on the way back up. Lovely part of the site in between trees, very quiet, compared to other racecourse sites, you wouldn't realise you were on one! Further from facilities but well worth it. Main part more busy, but seemed spacious. The showers were good, although the floor got really wet. Wardens really friendly and helpful. Fish and chips on a Friday night. Garage and food take out other side of A38, about 15 min walk under A38. Near to Haldon Forest Park for cycling and walking and National Trust properties. Definitely recommend.

Not up to Club Standards

Stayed here overnight as a stopover on the way to Cornwall. Site has easy access from M5 which is really the only good thing about it. It is on top of a hill and it was very windy when we were there. Would be horrible if wet. The site has an extreme lack of investment. The shower block whilst clean is very dated. The dish washing is open at the back. There is nothing nearby so you need a car to go anywhere. The Club can do better with our subscriptions!

Great site with many improvements with the new management

We only stay here for single nights when in transit as the location is perfect for us and we don't live far away.. We used to have some niggles and, in particular, the drive over facility for MH grey waste was a nightmare to get to when others were around as it was just in the wrong place. The new managers are really lovely people and have made a number of improvements including a brand new, easily accessible, drive over facility. We would recommend this site for longer stays as there is great access to many activities nearby as well. We are aiming to attend during a race meeting because, by all accounts, it is a lot of fun.
