Fakenham

Spent 6 nights here in mid August, location is good, however facilities are not up to Caravan Club standards, whilst we were there a number of people asked for refunds as the toilet facilities were dirty. I cannot confirm to as we use our own. Over all staff were helpful but it’s facilities need up dating.

Another pleasant stay

We spent four nights at this site last week; we try and get up to Fakenham Racecourse at least twice a year as it is so convenient as a base for visiting the coast and other local market towns. The facilities are clean, the pitches of a good size and the staff always very helpful. We have been visiting this site for at least 10 years and always enjoyed it. The site is primarily a racecourse and allowances must be made for this fact. However the site itself is very pleasant and is within easy walking distance of Fakenham itself. There is a golf club by the racecourse with a clubhouse, which is open to caravanners and serves meals and a selection of beers etc. There are also plenty of pubs/restaurants in the local area.

Big Disappointment

We only booked this site at the last minute, so we were limited to what camps were available for the Easter weekend, so we ended up with fakenham. We booked our pitch online, and after our booking had been placed and our money taken, we then received an email to state that we had to be off the pitch by 9 on Monday due to a race taking place. Next, we then received another message to say that due to heavy rain, our chosen pitch was flooded and for us to choose an alternative option to either another grass pitch or hard standing. Obviously due to the weather we chose the latter. After arriving later than usual to the site, we were greeted by a gentleman who showed us to our pitch - next to the Bet Fred shed, and on a slope, Well, what a disaster, as it was difficult to get the caravan level. All other caravans near us were all over the place, no proper pitches. The facilities, i.e., waste and water and chemical point are all over the place and not near one another at all. The toilet block was adequate but could certainly do with updating and visiting at night was creepy as the site does not have lights at night. As previously said, site out of the way and every day we ventured out, it was over an hour away each way. Very disappointed and would most certainly not recommend or visit again.

Lovely Overnight Stay

We decided on the Saturday Morning to take our dog away for the first time , so rang the site and the lady was very helpful , she reserved me a pitch right by the Grandstand with no one else around , pitch 35 which was right next to the race course lovely spot. As she told me when we arrived Saturday afternoon the office was closed but a welcome pack was waiting by the door , and we were greeted by the Warden , who was a friendly old chap and very helpful , there were only about another 6 campers there when we were , so it was very quiet and peaceful which suited us with the dog , we had a lovely pitch , hook up for electric and TV and free wifi with a good signal ! The toilet block which was accessed with a fob was basic , but big , very clean and heated .We used the showers in the morning and the hot water and power was fine. Dog walking area (basically a big field) was close by and it was interesting to walk around the racecourse when it was empty. There is a social club near the entrance which we didn't use this time , but I believe they do meals and cheap beer which is accessible to campers. All in all we really liked it there and will probably use again , it was ideal for us taking our dog with us for the first time to get him used to motorhome life ! Thumbs up from us !

Handy Stopover, but you wouldn't want to stay long

We stayed here for one night in November 2016, as a stopover after visiting the Pensthorpe Nature Reserve. It's one of the few sites open at that time of year. The layout was peculiar, for a caravan site, in that in pitches were in odd places, dotted around the racecourse. The facilities were all there - hookup, water, toilets, showers. The problem was that the washroom facilities were all dual-purpose, so not ideal for motorhomers or caravanners. The men's toilet block was cold and cavernous - not at all welcoming. Wash basins were open. The shower looked stark and uninviting. The location was OK, but you couldn't really get anywhere easily with bicycles. Nothing was within easy walking distance. We wouldn't go back there, unless it was as a handy stopover to get somewhere.

A very enjoyable stay

I was rather worried after reading other reviews of this site but we had an excellent week in our caravan. Yes there are some very noisy birds in a copse close to some of the pitches but our pitch 102 was large and well away from the trees and with a lovely view over the rails across the course. From our pitch bird noise was definitely not a problem. As this is a racecourse the pitches are very varied and I would recommend calling the office and talking to them about your preferences before you book. The staff in the office were very friendly, you can buy milk etc from them and have your papers delivered. Although the toilet and shower blocks are rather old they were clean and not a problem for us. It is a pleasant short walk into Fakenham which we found to be a quaint little place. I would recommend the Wisteria tea room and we also enjoyed an evening in the old fashioned cinema. The real strength of the site is how well placed it is for seeing the North Norfolk coast. We had a wonderful time exploring kings Lyn, Sandringham, Blickling, Sherringham, Cromer and numerous other places.

Very, very poor site.

This is nothing more than a very basic site with minimal facilities. The site is next door to a nesting site for crows in huge numbers which were very noisy throughout the day from 4.00 a.m. onwards until very late at night. Even in the night there was noise when they were, I guess, startled by something. The answer of the site management was to let off huge bangers to scare the crows from their own nesting site; all day! As the crows flew off they covered cars and vans in droppings and were back in a few minutes anyway. The toilets are far from the hard standing as is the disabled toilet and the wash-up "shed". There was plenty of mud still about on the "hard standing" which was basically a well used shingle bed. The toilets and showers were distinctly uncared for - dirty floors, one working light between five toilets in the ladies, no shower curtain or splash containment so that anything on the floor of the cubicle got thoroughly wet. Why don't these people try out their own facilities and discover just how user unfriendly they are? If the management want to improve this site I suggest that they get some club members in there to show them what is required. Also, LEAVE THE CROWS ALONE place the vans and motorhomes on the other side of the site. The crows were there long before those wishing to make money out of the land.

Horses for Courses

This site is perfectly placed for anyone exploring the Norfolk coast as it's only around 20 miles to the likes of Cromer. You have to bear in mind this is a racecourse and accept as thus. We had a hardstanding pitch right in front of the grandstand and it was excellent. Loads of room to ourselves. The facilities are a bit basic but perfectly adequate, cleaned every morning and loads of hot water. No kids playground obviously, but a grass area set aside as a play field. Dog owners like us have loads of space for the pooch to run around if you move out of the main area to what would be a car park during race days. Office closed when we arrived but welcomed by a very helpful chap who kindly fetched our welcome pack and asked to come back when the office opened. Very trusting. Not everyone's cup of tea but perfectly acceptable and probably somewhere between a full CC site and a CL. We'd be happy to use again if need be.

Visit: 2/8-16/8/2016

On arrival, reception was closed but I was greeted by a very friendly older chap who lives on-site. This was as good as it got. From there, it was all very poor. After setting up and, within minutes, having my unit MASSED in thunderflies, I went to reception and asked if an alternative pitch was available. The woman now on reception (dyed-blonde hair, unsure of name) was the most unhelpful, unfriendly and belligerent individual I have ever met in many years of travels. "This is a farm in Norfolk - what do you expect ?" was the response. Well, 1) it's advertised as a racecourse and not a farm and 2) I lived in Norfolk for many years and never encountered thunderflies. They are everywhere and are so small that they appear in all places despite netting, screens etc. It was even suggested that, because I have such a large unit, I couldn't help but attract them ! Like a previous reviewer, I was pitched along the bank of conifers and was greeted every morning from 4.00am from the cacophony of rooks flying around the trees above. Incessant and extremely loud noise, repeated every evening between 6.00 and 8.00pm. Facilities are cleaned every day but are very tired looking and always full of webs and insects. Although the location is very good for exploring the North Norfolk coast and other towns and villages in the area, you must factor in all of the negatives above and weigh up whether it's worth looking at an alternative site. I certainly wouldn't visit here again and, from looking at a site a third full for a fortnight in early August, it would appear a lot of people have felt the same. Book elsewhere.

Good central location

I stayed over Whitsun Weekend, when the site was busy. I had a pitch on grass, overlooking the racecourse itself, and was impressed by the amount of room I had. Although the office was closed when I arrived, my welcome pack was left out for me in a little box by the office door, and when I went back to pay the warden was lovely - very friendly and helpful, as you would expect. Since I don't have children, I'm not able to comment really on how good it is for families, but it had everything I wanted. The little club in the building next door served no-frills, reasonably priced food, and again they were very welcoming. Yes the washrooms are a bit tired, but spotlessly clean and perfectly adequate, and it needs to be remembered that these belong to the racecourse, not the Caravan Club. It was good value for money and I will gladly stay there again in the future.
