Good for families

Be warned!

A word of warning if intending to visit this site! During the day the site is perfect for families. However, that can't be said during the hours of darkness. Woke up at 03:30 by a group of yobs in the country park directly behind our caravan. Thought nothing too much of it at the time but woke up later on to find my carrera fury bike had gone (locked to caravan wheel) with the lock on the floor which had been cut through. Reported it to wardens who confirmed that at least 6 others had also been stolen during the night and a large number of masked youths had been seen in and around the site. Decided not to stay another night due to safety concerns but wasn't allowed a nights refund as the warden didn't have the authority to do that. He advised me to contact the club on monday . Discretion should have been used under the circumstances?. The biggest fear for me though was that masked youths can happily roam the site stealing bikes at will. What would have happen had my wife disturbed them had she wanted to visit the toilet block at the time doesn't bear thinking about and the site has a responsibility for the welfare and safety of its visitors. That was sadly lacking last night though and I for one will never visit Ferry Meadows ever again as I value the safety of my family above all else. Think very seriously before visiting this site!

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review. This sort of incident is an unusual occurrence at this site and for this to have happened at all, the Club is very sorry.  The site team is working in conjunction with the local Police team and will be putting further security in place for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

I am currently staying at this site and am aware of the incident last night.  Yes bikes were stolen by 4 youths, yes this shouldn't happen on a campsite but theft happens everywhere.  I do not think it warrants '   Be Warned' for an isolated incident, which has been reported to the police.  There is CCTV at the site and a barrier controlled access and egress to both sides of the site. This was out of the control of the wardens. The site is secure. This one incident needs to be kept in proportion.

In regards the wardens they are friendly, professional and visible.

This site is fantastic for the following reasons: Very family friendly, large pitches, clean facilities with lots of showers. The play area is fantastic for kids of all ages and the location to the country park is ideal.

I will be returning to this site. Please do not let the negative reviews put you off.  It is one of the best sites I have stayed at.

You are course are entitled to your opinion but I'm sticking with mine thank you.  How can the site be secure when bikes are being stolen.  I won't be visiting again. I' m  not so sure the incident is an isolated one but the wardens may well tell you differently

I agree that theft shouldn't happen, but it does happen and it could happen at any campsite.

I feel for the victims of the theft, however this isolated incident must be kept in proportion.

Nothing can ever be 100% secure but I think the club has taken reasonable precautions here.

I can understand how upset you are, Bazza, but sites near towns and those in country parks such as this, Clumber, Edinburgh and Pembrey are always going to be at higher risk of attracting intruders. We can only take sensible precautions and buy a good insurance policy.

The warden didn’t have the authority to apply discretion but I hope the club looks favourably on your claim for a refund.

Dont let one unfortunate incident put you off.

Just  what would it take for the clubs faithful to accept that there are problems at a site? Possibly  theft  of thier own property rather than that of someone else.

The OP deserves  the thanks of other potential visitors for bringing this to their attention

There are a number of sites where such thefts do occur and this, on occasion is one of them

We have been useing this site several times a year since the mid 1980s  And although there have been recently notices adviseing to keep cycles secure, those have appeared on numerous sites, but have never had any problems noted at this site on any of our visits  I understand the upset of having property stolen, but to make out that there is not enough "security "is a bit OTT  ,what else can be done two deture  the oportunist low life's

I can also understand your frustration about the refund, and am sure the claim will be treated simpertheticaly when by the club, it is out of the hands of the site staff to go against company policy as with any large organization, without the "nod"of higher graded staff

We visited Ferry Meadows earlier this year and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  We will most certainly visit it again and won’t be put off by the title of this thread.

Thank you for all replies and i do appreciate, and accet, that others may have differing opinions on a subject.  My post was simply to warn others of an incident that happened to my family, and others, who stayed had Ferry Meadows last night.

As the saying goes "to be forewarned is to be forearmed" and I sincerely hope others are more fortunate than we were last night.

Without detracting from the severity of last nights thefts, if nothing else I guess at least I get a new bike out this unfortunate incident.
