July visit

This was the last stop on our tour of Wales. The site was completely full as there was a music festival on over the weekend. Nevertheless, the wardens were welcoming and cheerful. The site comprises a series of glades and circles with one central shower block. This meant that if you were the far side of the site, you had a long walk. We had come from CLs so continued to use our own facilities so we were fine. Also it is a big site. when it is full, I think there are probably queues for the showers. Some of the hard standings were a bit public but we chose a grass pitch and had plenty of room. Usual information room - not much use to us with two dogs. Quite a bit of distant road noise - it wasn't awful but having come from some really rural CLs and living in a quiet rural location, we did notice it a bit. No problems at all with access - you should try Bolton Abbey!! Although there is a very nice and secure woodland walk for dogs, plus the big bonus of a key to go into the nearby playing fields, we were very disappointed to find that the parts of the Welsh costal walk close to the site were all on roads - often very busy roads. And there was very little parking to allow you to join the path in more rural settings. Another thing - this site isn't close to the Gower beaches. You have at least a half hour drive along some very twisty roads to get to a beach. Finding dog friendly beaches means an even longer drive. Rosilli is wonderful, Free to NT members and the most amazing beach. But nearly an hour's drive and access to the beach down an incredibly steep path. Not too bad going down - awful coming back. Anywhere else we found the parking charges to be a bit steep - especially if you were not going to stay for a whole day. Shops nearby are ok. There is an expensive Tesco express within walking distance, a co-op in Gowerton and a Nisa not far away. So you won't starve. We enjoyed ourselves very much, the weather was great, the site is well maintained and the wardens were fantastic. But we were disappointed by the area - it wasn't really what we were expecting and we won't return. But you'll have a lovely time I'm sure. Oh yes, and to the people who left their two dogs howling for hours because they were shut up in a caravan on a sunny day whilst their owners went out (the wardens took it very seriously I'm pleased to say) - shame on you!
