Pleasant enough.

Nice clean site, well maintained and the shower facilities etc were very clean. I spent the previous 10 days Wainwright bashing and cycling around Derwent water so was looking forward to the 'Flat' cycling however apart from a little around the site which itself is on a hill and Grange Sands promenade all I found was hills! I'm from Norfolk so I know what flat is. Walkers paradise refers to the general Lakes area, not around this site as only 3 little 1 mile there and back walks were offered to me. Other than that I enjoyed my visit but doubt I'll return.

An absolute gem of a site!

First visit to the Lake District and so glad we chose this site. Quiet mid-week, even during August holiday season, and even when full at weekends it is still very pleasant, thoughtfully laid out with lots of smaller areas offering a variety of shadey or sunny pitches. Facilities were beautifully maintained by very friendly and helpful wardens. Yes, the access road is narrow and steep in places but with the club arrival time after 1pm to avoid congestion, we did not have any issues getting our caravan in or out of the site - it certainly wouldn't deter us! Lovely view towards Arnside from one of the two dog walks, both of which dogs can be off lead in. Hotel 5 minutes walk from site is pricey for food but lovely for an evening pint! Great location for both Windermere and Coniston, Grange-over-Sands is lovely with a good variety of convenience shops/cafes/takeways/bakery and Arnside is a must to visit and watch the Boar Tide come in - quite breathtaking! The local village of Cartmel is also a must to visit with a local brewery, cheese shop, lovely cafe, few gift shops and home of the Sticky Toffee Pudding - absolutely delicious. Most places do charge for parking and even public toilets, so be warned! - although they are cash or card. We will definately return to the area and would most definately return to this site - we cannot fault it, and the fantastic wardens are a credit to the network. Thank you!

Great site- advice to head warden

I don’t do negative reviews about sites and I will not be doing one here. But advice to senior warden, if a customer fails to leave anything on their pitch and a new customer pitches up to that pitch, just tell new customer they will have to find a new pitch. Don’t tell new customer that you don’t want confrontational exchange with the original customer. And if you are a member of the public waiting to check-in at office, don’t stick your nose in with worthless advice. All that said we had a very enjoyable stay and can compliment the site on being extremely clean and tidy.

Poor access road

Good site, clean site, but access road is very poor. It’s very narrow with some sharp turns and a very steep inclining right turn where the road is marked in several places because the back end of caravans ground out due to the sudden steep inclination. I won’t return to the site because of the access.

A lovely site - will return

This was our first visit to Meathop Fell and we were there for 4 days. We arrived on the second hottest day of the year and were very pleased that there was a serviced pitch available in the shade and the added bonus of being able to see the River Kent in the distance too. Our pitch was slightly sloping so we needed to use a ramp but others hear us had to lift up their jockey wheel too due to the slope. There was grass between the pitches as well as a large grassed area behind them which was ideal for sitting in the shade of the trees. The wardens were lovely and very helpful and everywhere was very clean and tidy. It was great to have 2 enclosed dog walk areas - one smaller one partially in the shade near the entrance and the other a large field near the grass pitches. This has long grass but wide paths had been cut through it in various directions so you could walk around easily but our dog could have a great time playing too. The toilet facilities were very good and the information room was well stocked. There were lots of hand sanitiser points around the site. There’s a food van on site Wednesday to Sunday who currently only does burgers (beef, chicken & a vegetarian one) due to a problem with his pizza oven. Whilst expensive (£24 for 2) they were excellent and the fries were really crisp. We had a takeaway from Fish over Chips in Grange over Sands which were amazing and well worth the drive. We had a lovely walk along the promenade in Grange. We decided not to walk the 3 miles with our dog as the road is quite narrow in places but we found 1 hour free parking along Kents Bank Road which is ideal for Tesco Express, Co-op, Spar or one of the other shops etc bakery, butchers as well as a walk down to the promenade. There are plenty of car parks for longer stays - the one at the railway station is £5 for the whole day. We got the train to Arnside (£4.30 for 2 return) across the viaduct. We walked up Arnside Knott through the woods (some sections are pretty challenging) and had a wonderful view of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. We’d hoped to see the tidal bore from Arnside Pier but although we were there at the right time, the height of the tide was too low so we didn’t see it. You can hear the warning sirens when the tide is on its way in as the estuary can be dangerous. If you park in Sandscale Haws Nature Reserve car park (on the Barrow Peninsula) you can walk to the lovely Roanhead Beach and dunes next to the Duddon Estuary. You should visit Cartmel too - this is where they make the famous sticky toffee pudding and is a lovely (but busy) village with regular horse racing. We choose serviced pitches so for us the site was great but some non awning pitches were on tarmac and were a little unwelcoming- rather like parking in a car park or lay-by but they’d be fine for an overnight stop. The wardens sell basic items in case you’ve run out of something & you don’t want to drive to Grange. We loved our stay and will definitely return.

Beautiful site with lovely dog walk field

First time we have stayed at Meathop Fell and we had a lovely stay. Access was easy once off of motorway but the lane leading up is quite narrow . It was very quiet and peaceful. It had a great dog walk field to take your pooch for a quick walk first thing and before bed time. Toilets as usual were clean and well looked after. The shop had a few groceries which was very handy. Very pleasant friendly staff. The site was very near (3 mile walk) to lovely towns such as Grange over Sands and the Lakes themselves (short car journey). I was also very struck by the beautiful hedgerows on the walk to Grange Over Sands, there were so many wild flowers within them, so pretty. Definitely want to go back again.

One of our favourite sites..superb location

This is the site we’ve visited the most. Easy access off the A590. Yes there is one bad turn going up to the site but we’ve always managed to get round with no issues as the road is very quiet. We’ve stayed on numerous pitches at different times of the year and they have all been great. Toilet block is beautiful, nicest I’ve seen! Great walk into Grange down a quiet road straight outside the site. Grange itself is lovely with shops and cafes. We’ve also cycled from here to Bowness. Would recommend this site to anyone.

Meathop Fell - July 2022

We used this site as a one night stop over and it provided easy access off junction 36 on the M6. Check-in was easy, and we were happy being pitched in the tarmac area (perhaps not so if we had been staying longer). Small enclosed dog walk and a larger field available, which was great. Toilets spotless. Woodlands Hotel is a 5 minute walk and we booked in there for our evening meal, dogs are allowed in the conservatory. Meal was lovely, they also do takeaway. Would use again as a stopover

1st time, 6 days in July

Stayed here 6 days in July during the heat wave. This was our 1st time at this site. The route into the site is quite narrow and at one point I did think we had taken a wrong turning, Turn off the main 'A' road and go down a narrow lane with passing places, at the end is a sharp left turn up a steep slope then after 100 yards the site is on the left. We arrived around 1.30pm and were quickly on our way looking for a pitch. The warden did say that someone had arrived at 12 noon and was told to turn around and come back later which I fully agree with - Well done. The site is set on several levels with hard standings and grass pitches. Some of these are very unlevel and require wheel & leg blocks. We initially pitched next to the play area as we were waiting for friends and were told other plots would be available near-by, however although kids don't bother us we did feel a bit like fish in a bowl as children & parents walked past. We moved the following day to a pitch at the other side of the site which was much quieter. The site was very clean, the facilities immaculate and the views stunning. I do agree with a previous review that a couple of areas on the site do resemble cars parks made up of chippings and tarmac and not the usual club standards so I'm unsure why they took this approach to make pitching areas. Other than that we had a very enjoyable stay with easy access to all areas of the Lakes.

Two weeks of heaven at Meathop Fell

Just returned from two weeks at this beautiful site. The views from the excellent dog walk area are breathtaking. Facilities excellent. The whole site was well maintained. The toilet blocks very clean and spacious. The wardens worked very hard and all were very friendly and helpful. The pizzas from the "van" were so good we tried a few! Saw many families with young children happily enjoying the play area. Great access to the whole of the wonderful Lake District and Grange over Sands is delightful - a walk along the Prom is a must. Hoping to return again. We had the perfect holiday and would recommend this site to anyone.
