A surprisingly lovely area and fabulous site with far reaching views

Meathop Fell CAMC Here for 4 nights in May 2022 Lovely site on different levels with a mixture of grass and hand standing pitches. A few trees so a mix of sun and shade too. The grass pitches are pretty dry as it’s quite rocky beneath the surface. There are about a dozen pitches with views, both at the top and bottom of the site and around the edge of the dog field. There are a lot of non awning pitches: some of these are on tarmac. Fabulous views from grass pitches next to the Dog field. We were lucky enough to get one- pitch 58 so parked nose in to make the most of the views. The dog field is massive with fabulous views on a clear day. We needed levelling blocks as a lot of the grass pitches weren’t level. First evening had a lovely walk along the 1 mile promenade in Grange. It was very quiet with lovely views over the estuary. You could walk to Grange from the site but it’s along a quiet country road rather than footpaths. There is a footpath to the nearby pretty village of Lindale which has a pub, the Royal Oak. We didn’t have time to try it unfortunately. Took the 5 min train ride to Arnside over the estuary and walked for about 5 miles around and over Arnside Knott. This is national trust land and dogs can be mostly off lead which my dog loved after a lot of walks on lead through fields of sheep. Found a great cafe, Sandpipers as we walked back towards the station. Great coffee and cakes( incl gluten free) and dog friendly. Visited Cartmel ( can recommend Cartmel Coffee in the square) with its interesting little shops and did a circular walk to Cark. As we passed the Holker estate we stopped there for a delicious lunch at their Courtyard cafe. You can also walk in the deer park for free, with dogs on leads. We liked this site more than we expected and also loved Grange over Sands. There were some nice cafes in Grange that we didn’t have time to try.
