Excellent when you get there

A really lovely site but not always easy to get in and out with a large vehicle. We stayed in our motorhome - fortunately with an additional car. The country roads in the areas around the site can be a bit of a nightmare and I would recommend ignoring your satnav and approaching the site from Modbury village - it is only marginally better in terms of passing-places but it at least it is the shortest distance from the nearest A road. If you want to take a motorhome on a visit to Bigbury or Mothercombe be prepared for a lot of stopping and starting, although we did find the local car drivers very considerate on the narrow roads - that said, parking at both locations was not a problem, albeit a shortish walk from the beaches. The staff on site were very friendly and well organised to meet the challenges of COVID-19. All the facilities were immaculately clean, fully functional and not showing any sign of age despite being, apparently, "very dated" - indeed, I believe the well was fitted with a new rope and bucket only last year :-)

Beggars Belief!

It's a pleasant well kept site but as most reviews have stated the approach road is busy and very narrow in places and meeting a large or fast moving vehicle is 'very hairy' to say the least! There is a good dog exercise field on site, where they can run free. There was adequate signage on site regarding the present Covid 19 situation, but no hand sanitiser provided by the tap. We found it unbelievable that in this time of taking extra precautions there was a constant stream of people using the showers and toilets. What is the matter with using your own facilities, thus avoiding any added personal risk? Also creating less work for the wardens. The only people on site who really needed to use them were the campers.

Nice site, shame about the access road

This site is very clean and well kept by the friendly staff. The big problem is the road in and out. Upon leaving we came across a large tractor pulling a large trailer being followed by numerous cars. We also had several cars behind us, complete nightmare !! Eventually the tractor managed to get far enough in to the verge to just squeeze through with our caravan brushing against the bushes. Wouldn't go again which is a shame because the site is quite well located for visiting surrounding area.

Spent over an hour gridlocked on the narrow lane just before the site,

Lovely site and staff, old fashioned shower block that is looking dated but adds to the charm, moved pitch due to farmer on other side of the hedge using tractor in the early hours. Biggest issue was the road just before the site, have travelled to this site before a number of times and have been lucky not to meet much coming in the other direction but this time spent over an hour stuck in a jam on this short stretch as 2 lorries had become wedged.Eventually had to back the car and caravan back down the lane with all the traffic behind having to reverse till I could get to a passing place wide enough for the very large and wide lorries coming the other way to pass and then it was very tight. Bear this in mind when going to this site,be prepared to have to reverse with your caravan !

Quiet peaceful site

First time for us, at Modbury, like some of the other reviews the road in, is narrow and could be a issue, if your were to meet a HGV. First impressions, were the grounds were well looked after, and we received a warm welcome, from the warden. The pitch we chose, was a nice sheltered pitch, which was just as well as it got very, windy during our stay. What let the site down, was the toilet block, which the wardens kept clean, but were very dated, and not up to the Clubs usual standard. For this reason, I don’t think we would use the site again, we expect something a little better for our money. It was a very peaceful site, with no road noise, but that is not enough for us to return.

Very well kept Site with a wonderful dog exercise field.

It was a pleasure to stay at Modbury with our four legged family member who had a wonderful time on the beautifully maintained and extensive dog exercise field. It is ideal for exercising an active dog playing fetch with a ball, and also for socialising with other dogs and having a good game of chase(the dogs that is!) This is very important to us as it provides a safe environment where dogs can have fun off the lead without the worry of long un-mowed grass and undergrowth, which hide the threat to a dog's health from ticks, fleas, grass seeds (these get into eyes, ear and paws) but most dangerous of all provides a hiding place for adders. Full marks to Modbury Wardens for providing this superb area. These days we always contact Club Sites direct to make sure that the on site dog walk is a good field which is properly mowed before we book. We do not go to sites with these dreadful fields with long grass and weeds etc with a few "pathways" cut out. These get worn and muddy and enables the more anti social to leave their dog's mess behind. We know there are other dog owning Club members who also share these views.

Great site for dogs.....

Booked this site as a 'stop over' on our way up from Cornwall and will return! Very friendly and helpful wardens, particularly as we had to get the AA out. Excellent spacious dog walk on site. Facilities were a bit dated but clean and everything worked.

well run site, handy for ferry

We booked this site for just one night as it is a short drive from the Plymouth ferry port. We were surprised and delighted to be greeted by Chris and Tina, who do everything they can to make your stay a happy one. Their common sense approach at Start Bay club site restored our faith in the club. The facilities are somewhat dated (it's been years since I last saw a pink soap dish in the shower cubicle) but are extremely clean. A car is a necessity if you want to get out and about as the site is in the middle of nowhere. However, if all you want is relaxation, it's a haven of tranquility.

High Standard

Returned Monday after a first time visit for four nights and can only compliment the husband and wife wardens who are really bringing the site to an exceptionally high standard. Thank you. On top of that, a quieter more rural site would be hard to find.

Peaceful site But!

Very narrow roads to site. This is a fairly busy road used by HGV,s and local traffic using it as a cut through, there are only passing places on several sections of the road This has negotiated every time you go out which did become stressful at times. The site is kept very neat, wardens helpful and friendly . Toilet block very dated , tired with no benches to sit on and floor gets very wet due to shower angle
