The direction are right but a little miss leading in the site book. It talks of crossing Lairs Bridge but we could not see a name marker on the bridge, it talks of 4 roundabouts we counted only 3 before turning off and the right hand turn at the garage is at the top of the hill and is being redeveloped into a Co-op garage (Warden has placed a temporary sign to help what a great bunch they are). The bend goes left meaning you can not see the garage.Stayed here during some great July weather and the site is very well kept and the wardens give a very good welcome and site tour. The site has a very good dog walk, the beach is a 20 min stroll away & the local shop is 10 minns walk into the small village. The approach in the site book talks of narrow lanes but these are normal Devon lanes and are only 3 or 4 location.The site is well worth a visit would we return than the answer would be yes as the views are excellent.

Excellent site

We stayed for 8 nights on this site and loved every second of it. Lovely and peaceful, Wardens where very helpful and had lots of local knowledge of places to visit. Site very clean and the dog walk is lovely. If it a warm day and you want to take your dogs for a walk Saltram House is excellent, they cannot go in the house but there is a lovely walk which is shaded by tree's. My three Westie's loved it. Thank you to the Warden for recommending this one.

Lovely Site Fabulous Wardens

This site is a credit to it's Wardens who manage and maintain it impeccably. The approach Road is very narrow for the last mile, with a few passing places. If you look up the hill you can see large vehicles approaching and take avoiding action. The same is true of leaving when your field of view is enhanced. Beautiful views of Plymouth Sound. There are no facilities i.e. toilets or showers but is very well used despite this, if there were you probably would never get a pitch!! Great club wifi connection. 5 mbs download 1mbs upload. Mobile reception is very strong there is an adjacent mast. Easy drive to Plymouth, a local shop within walking distance. The local pub is currently up for sale. A very quiet tranquil site with panoramic views. I loved it.

The wind dath blow

Stayed 2 nights , scenery wonderful, lookout to sea , watched a submarine go out to sea . It is a windy site , with very narrow lanes on the last bit of the approach, take it slow and with care you can do it . Chatted to wardens , said where to go for a walk , and had one of the pasties on sale ( made by lady in village ) very tasty, recommend them. Would go back as relaxing, there is a bus service if you wish , walked to shop ( 10minutes ) sells papers, groceries, open all day . My 2 dogs loved the dog field , and pleased to say owners cleaned up . Thankyou .

Good for walkers

The site is fairly remote as Down Thomas village has a shop but the pub has closed. The next pub further on has spectacular views, from it's veranda, but is not recommended by us. We found it fairly easy to access the coastal path from the site, where you can walk east or west. By driving just a few miles to a free carpark at Mount Batten you can take a short ferry ride across to Plymouth Barbican where you then have easy access to Plymouth Hoe and pubs, restaurants and shops. The site is all grass with terrific views over Plymouth Sound, for those interested you can watch the Navy Ships come and go plus all the other sea traffic. We Spent a great week here but felt a little trapped when we wanted to get further afield as getting on to Dartmore, for example, meant a fairly time consuming drive around the outskirts of the city. We do however recommend the site as it is so relaxing.

But!

Beautiful site and location. Wifi is not free. £10 / 7days. However, I'm on the Three network. 3g is good. So for me wifi is not an issue. For some it might be. No loos/shower's, Comparatively Considering those points site is too expensive. I stayed here 50 years ago as a child. I've longed to return since. Now I've made it. I wish the site was worthy of 5 stars. Sadly it won't get them from me for those reasons. Sorry.

A cracking little site!

This is a site we use quite regularly. It is sited overlooking the stunning view of Plymouth Sound. True it doesn't have a shower/toilet block, but what the hell, most caravans & motorhomes have showers and toilets, why not use them. This season's wardens are extremely friendly and very helpful and a credit to the club. There is a very accessible dog walk on site and there is even a playing field for any children that do come. Whilst we were there the Wi-Fi was just being installed. The Digital TV signal is excellent and there is very little need to vary your ariel direction to get a good picture. Although it only has grass pitches they are well drained and if you want peace of mind put mats under your wheels. Sadly the Mussel Inn is currently closed and up for sale, I am sure it wont be long before a new landlord takes it on again. This is a site that encourages walking, however there are steep hills to the sea and one has to get back. So long as you are prepared for this site you will get every pleasure from its unique position.

Dissapointed.

A nice site with great views on a clear day. The wardens were very friendly and helpful. The site handbook did state that there was Wi-fi available at the time of booking, this was not the case. The facilities, what facilities? A definite lack of, no toilets or showers. The approach roads are narrow and care should be taken when travelling to and from the site. There was a lack of signage to the site which may cause problems if a turn is missed with a large motor home or a car and caravan. TV reception was OK. This grassed site would be a nightmare to get onto and off in wet conditions without 4 wheel drive. Very expensive to stay on with so little facilities available, I have stayed on cheaper CL's with better and more facilities. May I suggest the club considers putting a toilet/shower facility on site to provide value for money to site users for the expensive daily pitch charges.

Plymouth Sound, Devon

This is a site we return to, it has wonderful views over Plymouth Sound out to St Catherine's Chapel on the Cornish Coast and, with a steep walk down the lane to Bovisand Bay the Eddystone lighthouse comes into view. The cove at Bovisand is great for all ages with the bonus of grassy picnic areas and a cafe. Walks to Wembury on the coastal path start here. Up on the site the wind nearly blew us away but we still enjoyed our brief visit. There is a very good dog walk and a large playing field on the site. The site is in the little village of Down Thomas which has a small shop and the aptly named "Mussel Inn." Don't expect to see all the views when the site is busy but at quieter times of the year there is a good chance of a reasonable sea view. The pitching price is very good value, we paid £14.50.
