Not one of our better experiences and a disappointment

Well, a sight of utter disbelief and dismay. Been to Putts Corner numerous times before. A site situated amongst fields, wooded areas and very rural indeed. Nearest building the Fox and Hounds pub, a quarter of a mile away. Nothing else for miles. Caravan and Motor Home club policy makers, bluntly what have you done? What are we faced with now. From a well-cared for and pristine site, a very successful transformation to one of an appearance of neglect, being run down, even abandoned due to a complete lack of any ground work attention. It looks untidy and unkempt. The site is quite frankly a mess and the powers that be up the chain of command should be ashamed of themselves in adopting a ‘No mow May, (now the end of June) and "Giving wild life a chance" in such a rural area. It is not necessary. It has ruined a lovely site in a nice location. It is though the lunatics have taken over the asylum. Come Autumn when the leaf’s begin to fall the site will be a nightmare to return to some semblance of tidiness and normality with its long grass and overgrown hedgerows. Such a shame.

Very disappointed with the upkeep of this site

We have stayed at Putts Corner many times; it is one of our favourite sites. Although inland, there are a lot of nice places within easy reach, either by bus or car, and there is a nice pub if you don't mind a short walk through the woods at the top of the site. So we were looking forward to being at Putts Corner again. The site is usually very well kept; grass cut, hedges trimmed, nice flower beds etc, tidy. Now this is not the case! The grass and hedges have been left to 're-wild'. In other words the grass and hedges are no longer trimmed. Hedges are overgrown, there is no control of brambles or nettles. The grass around the pitches is long, soon to be hay. I become worried about the risk of fire around our pitch. An fire would have easily set fire to the awning and possibly the caravan (like most caravans we have a gas bottle - even worse consequences!). Also there were long brambles growing out of the hedge next to the pitch, (which my husband trimmed to ensure that we were less likely to catch ourselves on them). A notice at reception said that the wardens welcomed feedback on the re-wilding. I approached the wardens (now managers) with my safeguarding fears about this. My concern was that people smoke and use barbecues on sites so there is a risk of fire. Any fire could impact on my safety, my outfit's safety and the safety of other campers as it could easily spread. Their response was aggressive to say the least. One warden asked me how long I would like the grass to be, asking me to specify a length! I explained again my fears of the fire risk causing a safeguarding issue to all campers. Eventually he said he would take a look at it. We went out, and came back later to find that the grass directly around our pitch had been cut back to about 6 inches, long lengths of the cuttings were strewn everywhere. What a mess. I have 2 more bookings at other CAMC sites in the near future so phoned ahead to these sites to be reassured by them that 'No Mow May' was not extended to 'No Mow or tending the site all year' for all CAMC campsites. We looked at other sites for our next visit to this area and found more than a few that were excellent, very neatly kept and cheaper than the prices now being charged by the club. Due to all of the above we will not be staying at this site again.

Peaceful site

A lovely peaceful site. The layout is good with the site rounds meandering around with hedges creating different areas. Other reviews have been critical of the mowing, but we were there in early June 2023 and the wardens were getting it back in control. There are two toilet blocks so you are never left without one open during the day. The only problem we experienced was that due to the near drought conditions the hard standing pitch we were on was absolutely rock solid. Even with rock pegs we couldn't put an awning up and broke our mallet. Be warned, unless it has rained if you need an awning get the sort of peg you can put in with a hammer drill. On balance a lovely site in a good touring location which we wouldn't hesitate to go back to. The wardens were nice and friendly and we had no problems apart from not being able to put an awning up and that was just down to recent weather conditions.

10 - 15 June

Booking in and pitch selection was completed without any problems and during our stay all the facilities were clean and serviceable. The site is easily accessed from Honiton using the A375 and is well positioned for visits to the coast and all the various local visitor attractions. Much of the grass and hedges had not been recently trimmed so if you are expecting the normal CAMC manicured grass and hedges this site isn't for you, but that situation didn't impact on our stay. Yes there was occasional road and aircraft noise but the main source of disturbance was caused by inconsiderate dog owners and their barking mutts. Will we return - yes but with fingers crossed that the doggy visitors will be a little better controlled in future.

Very peaceful site

Arrived for the Bank Holiday weekend . We found the staff to be welcoming and helpful, and were pleased when they told us there is a bus stop at the end of the road which was a welcome surprise! It was clean and well kept, they told me they had just mown the grass as it was not in a good state when they inherited it, so they left it to grow and recover. Now they were pleased it had grown back lush and thick. The birdsong is lovely here , and although there are a lot of trees, the site still was bathed in sunshine. Nice to have a toilet / shower block open all the time as they rotate the cleaning times - I found them to be very clean as you would expect on a club campsite. We had a lovely grass pitch although blocks were needed as a bit sloping, but there are lots of different sized pitches to choose from. Nice few minute wander to the pub nearby. Thank you, we will return.

Nice site but untidy

We have used this site several times and always found it clean, tidy and good location for the area we like, but this time we arrived in May to find grass pitches uncut and grass a foot tall, due apparently to no mow May. It made it uncomfortable to walk around pitch especially in shorts getting bitten by bugs as did several other people, and it made the site look very scruffy. The water temperature at the dish washing facility was obviously turned down making washing greasy dishes difficult. Will come again but not in May.

WHAT A WELCOME

We arrived at the site at 1pm, the first sign you see is telling you, ‘Arrival time is 1pm, if you arrive before then leave the site and return at 1pm’. what a welcome to your holiday. The next sign reads ‘Pull your vehicle forward, the driver must stay with the vehicle and the passenger to book in’. My partner is disabled so I always book in, so ignored the sign, parked up and booked in. (Rules rules rules). The disabled shower/toilet facilities were not cleaned daily and certainly not kept at the standards we’ve come accustomed to at CMAC sites. We’ve been visiting this site for many years and it was very very untidy, so sad to see it in such a state. The wardens unlike sites we’ve been visiting over the last 20 years were hardly visible, not out working as you’d normally see.

The best Club site we've used in 7 years

We really enjoyed our six nights at Putts Corner: it's not too difficult to get to, despite Devon's narrow roads (in places); the pitches are varied and not in serried ranks like many Club sites; the trees are beautiful; the site is peaceful with little noise from the roads; the staff are helpful; the facilities great and modern . . . . . . and we'll be back.

Shame about the Staff!

We stayed here over Easter and although it is a lovely site, the staff are so rude. As it was Easter there was a queue when we arrived to check in. A warden was asking the drivers ' have you paid'. We had paid in advance, so very loudly, the warden said, 'I love it when people pay in advance, you get to jump the queue and get in front of this lot'. We would of happily waited in line, but embarrassingly overtook everyone and entered the site. Whilst setting up, a warden came over to us and told us off for not letting them know which pitch we were on and gave us a key fob to get out the gate..........the fact that they had a queue in Reception and we were still setting up was not considered a good enough excuse. My wife used the toilets during the cleaning of them, oh my goodness note to self, we must wear watches when staying at Putts Corner, so we know what the time is so we DO NOT ENTER the toilets at the wrong time and get told off. People started to leave, so they locked off toilets and showers, so we couldn't us them, therefore they did not have to clean them. Another camper questioned this, then surprise surprise they then placed signs on the doors saying closed for maintenance. After 6 days of staying there, a warden came banging on our door to inform us that we had not parked between the white pegs and we needed to move.........?. By this time there were only 8 campers left on pitches, as everyone quite rightly left this site. We had no one else parked near us, but yes we moved 3 inches to the left. At this point we decided to leave, so cut our stay short. Shame - although it is a lovely site, the staff don't want you there, we will never return.

Great site, excellent welcome from helpful wardens

This is a site that we use often, sometimes as a location in itself, but also as a stopping off point between home in West Cornwall on our way along the South Coast. On this occasion we stopped twice, over night on the way out and way back home. The new wardens were cheerful, smiling and joking as they coped with the 1.00pm stream of arrivals and were fast tracking those who had paid in advance to reduce the size of the queue which can soon block the narrow road leading to the site, and dealing efficiently with those, like ourselves, who had opted to pay on arrival. We lost our grey water drain down pipe from our Camoer can as we left the site and did not realise until we arrived at the next site, so left a phone message asking if the wardens could keep an eye out for it. On our return visit we arrived in the pouring rain and the wardens were again very welcoming and helpful, we were soon checked in and on our pitch. Later when I enquired as to whether our waster pipe had been found, the wardens said they had looked around for it and kept their eyes open and one warden had discovered it lying on top of a waste bin and he had saved it for us - thank you so much. We will continue to use this lovely site and wish the new wardens every happiness and success.
