A journey not for the faint hearted, but worth it

Having read the reviews and looked at the last part of the journey on Google Maps we knew what to expect but that didn't really make it any less hair raising with locals who clearly didn't like caravans coming along the A379 from Kingsbridge. It really is vital that you follow the directions in the book/on the website. Off to a sticky start when on arrival we wanted to pay with evouchers - a learning curve for the staff. A large number of units turning up at 1pm also put the wardens in a bit of a spin as it meant the road outside the site was blocked but they did a good job of getting through people as quickly as possible. We had travelled with friends and had already asked to be sited together however we were split up despite there being 3 pitches together. Anyway onto the site - The site is sloped with terraces for the pitches, we were on the bottom terrace, the pitch was plenty big enough for our twin axle caravan and awning. There are plenty of water/bin stations around the site. The facilities block is a bit dated and the hand dryer in the ladies was out of order for the 2nd week of our stay and then one of the hand basins out of use. The facilities are clean though, although the lack of shower curtains does mean that the entire floor of the cubicle gets wet. The site was wonderfully peaceful, there is a farm next to the site and you could hear the animals which was great. The dog walk area is adequate and you can walk to the beach at Torcross from the site, where dogs are allowed all year. There is a farm shop complex a couple of minutes walk away that has a cafe and a bar, there are also pubs that do food in the local village which is also a short walk. We had fish and chips from The Boathouse in Torcross and it was very good. I would suggest this site is for the more mature members and not for families as the location does not have a lot in the surrounding area for children. The beach is pebbly, there are no amusements etc. I would suggest probably Paignton/Torquay would be better if you were after this sort of thing. Telephone signal is very patchy as is the TV reception, although there is wifi available to purchase if you need it. Overall a lovely peaceful stay on a beautifully kept site with friendly wardens.

Lovely Site but not so lovely to get there

This is a well positioned and lovely site with fantastic views of the Devon countryside and a short walk from Torcross and Slapton Ley. The facilities were spotless, as always, but they are a little dated and would benefit from a upgrade. I must admit the roads on the site are a little narrow and in places with caravans and massive motorhomes on either side, especially on the middle level it does get a little scarily claustrophobic and does make it difficult to manoeuvre onto the pitch. The journey to and from this site is a little hairy even for Devon. The road from Totnes to Kingsbridge does have some significant challenges, with tight uphill bends and narrowish lanes. Following the site directory directions is a must but the road from Kingsbridge to site is narrow and it probably is not suitable for a towing vehicle. You really need to leave either early or late, we left at 06:30 and only met on vehicle coming the other way, others too were planning the same.

weather great site not so

stayed for 14 nights wanted hardstanding as we had an awning. were told non available. allocated a grass pitch with a 25 degree slope. you will need leg extenders ,blocks of wood or some means of supporting your legs. imagine our surprise to see 2 empty hardstanding pitches directly behind us!! .another member raised the issue and was told warden allocated!! to rub salt into the wound a VW campervan turned up next day in one of the hard standings lol. it only stopped one night. ridiculous situation. facilities blocks are dated ,no shower screens or stools /bench for clothes, but are kept immaculate. as every one says roads around site are very narrow but that`s Devon for you. seriously considering our membership renewal next year this site needs some investment, not good value for money in these competitive times. some CL`s and commercial sites are better value . the camping and caravan site up the road looked a better option.

Lovely stay but a few warnings

After a very traumatic journey for both of us ( but especially the driver) we arrived at start bay. The last 20 miles of narrow lanes through villages meeting busses, vans, pickup and trailers and trying to manoeuvre the caravan past on a road which is totally unsuitable for towing caravans did it for us. Some reverse but some don’t. A caravan after us had an accident with a bus on the lane. Reception staff were lovely and sensed our stress. The site itself is lovely and kept well except for weeds on the pitch. The showers were always clean but needed a little update. So a little walk about 1/2 mile was Torcross but we thought it was run down, yes the beach is a pebbly beach and farther up it’s shingle, but there’s just not a lot there. A cafe which was sometimes open, a pub on the seafront which was busy as there’s nothing else and chip shop and nothing else. Such a shame as it could be so very nice as the views were so beautiful. The bus to Dartmouth and kingsbridge goes from the village, Dartmouth is lovely with boat trips and lovely shops, worth a visit. We cut our holiday short and left at 6.30am to miss some traffic on the narrow lanes to lessen our stress levels for our 4 hour trip home. Sadly won’t return

Great site, hair-raising final approach!

This is a lovely site, well maintained and friendly staff. Short walk to the pebble beach, Slapton Ley nature reserve and nearby farm shop/cafe/micro brewery. Nice range of grass and hardstanding pitches - be aware that many of the grass pitches are on quite a slope. Easy to get to Dartmouth and Salcombe, bot well worth visiting. The biggest drawback is the awful approach from Kingsbridge, which features a lot of single lane road with limited or no visibility of oncoming traffic. There is a regular bus service so your chances of meeting a bus are pretty high - we met one in a narrow section, both of us with many vehicles behind, thankfully the bus driver was happy to reverse some 50 metres so we could get past.

Great stay at this site

Sometimes you come across Wardens who go the extra mile to make your stay smooth and enjoyable. This was our experience here, and would like to thank Martin, Gerry, Trevor and Judy for their dedication and professionalism . As well as keeping the site immaculate they were always around with a cheery smile and tips on places to visit which you wouldn't ordinarily have heard of, or come across. Well done .

Excellent site staff

We have stayed on this site many times and love the location. This visit was unique as we had a medical emergency with our dog who had major surgery whilst we were there. The friendly site staff were very supportive and helped us to manage our booking when we were uncertain about how long we needed to stay. This was The Club at its best with the staff not just looking after the site and facilities superbly but also looking after those staying there.

A good site but busy, busy!

We visited Start Bay in a 7.2mtr motorhome. The drive from Kingsbridge to the site was a bit of a challenge but would have been worse coming from Dartmouth! The site itself is kept immaculate by the very friendly wardens, however we found it quite a busy site partly, I suspect, due to it’s compact nature. There was a fair bit of road noise especially for the pitches close to the entrance. We also had 2 days of fence posts being hammered in, in the field above the site followed by a day of duelling chain saws in the woods behind! Can’t be helped; the work had to done but it didn’t make for a peaceful stay. The site has a small dog area which has a track leading from it to the excellent Stokeley Farm Shop and Cafe, (10mins), and down the hill to Torcross, (20mins). Torcross has a shingle beach, the excellent Start Bay Inn and a cafe/take away. The bus stop for Dartmouth is also there and is advised; especially for motorhomers! All in all, we enjoyed our stay but if returning to the area might look at other sites first due mainly to the access roads to and from. We actually left at 7am in order to avoid the morning traffic which was a good plan but I hope we didn’t disturb our neighbours!

Lovely place apart from the barking

This was our second visit to Start Bay, it is a wonderful place for walking and cycling (apart from the hills, narrow lanes and traffic). The only thing that spoilt it was barking dogs, which is common to all sites nowadays. If you don't mind being woken up at 06:00 and stay away from the site all day it is not a problem.

Ed’s updating

We have been going to this sight for several years. As alway the wardens were really friendly, no complaints there. The facilities now are very outdated and in desperate need of refurbishment, although still being serviceable. We love the area and despite the last leg of the journey being quite stressful we will doubtless go to this site again. The only query we do have is as to why some caravans and motor homes were allowed to pitch the other way around , I.e. facing inwards , instead of the way the club has always insisted that the jockey wheel/bonnet be facing outwards. We were on the left side , so obviously didn’t get the evening sun but there were others who did !! Despite this we had a good time and will return.
