The Lacals do Local camping

We must have driven past Stover a million times as we only live in Plymouth. Not put off by the distance 😃 Or lack of toilet block , we decided to give it a go,as we are normally CL types. The access is easy and the hard standings are nice and level. The country park was another first for us, and very enjoyable. The local co-op was handy for food and alcohol re supply as was the Shell petrol station for fuel. Yep, a bit of road noise from the adjacent roads ,but off set by the extremely well kept site and friendly helpful staff.

Lovely site - shame about the road noise and clay pigeon shooting

We booked this site for 12 days but knew on arrival we couldn't possibly put up with the constant road noise 24/7 although we did stay for 6 days after which we moved on to a very peaceful CL with sea views for the rest of our stay....Bliss! There is nothing in the club write up to suggest there is a problem with road noise although it is mentioned in a couple of reviews. We pitched as far away as we could at the far end of the site but still experienced noise from both the A38 and the A382. Not sure where the people who describe this site as peaceful and tranquil were situated. If peace and quiet is high on your agenda, this site is NOT for you. Shame really because it is a lovely site and the wardens are very helpful, it just needs to be somewhere else. As already mentioned in another review there is also the clay pigeon shooting which unnerved our dogs. Stover Country Park is very nice but if you have dogs beware, they are not allowed off lead around the lake and water courses which doesn't leave a lot where they can safely be let off lead. Our dogs found an open farm gate in the country park that had been left wide open onto a road! 10 out of 10 for the campsite and wardens.

A Delightful site

Access to this site, even with the largest of outfits, couldn't really be easier. A wide entrance gives access direct off the A382. The site has no toilet block, and the friendly wardens are keen to point this out on arrival (do some people not check the details before booking?) The site is well kept and is beautifully set surrounded by mature trees. Service points are conveniently located and were kept nice and clean and tidy. Excellent 4g coverage on EE and the TV booster system worked perfectly, picking up a wide range of channels. The site has a good dog walk, but longer walks are available in the adjacent country park, with a pedestrian gate just a few yards from the entrance. Road noise in unavoidable. The Devon Expressway gives off a constant background hum and boy racers opening up their throttle on the adjacent A382 would bother some visitors. A large Co-op at Trago Mills is available for provisions just 3/4 mile away.

Lovely, quiet site

This is one of our favourite sites for a quick getaway. The site is spotlessly clean and well cared for, with Stover Country Park a 5 minute walk away. The pitches are mostly level, well maintained and feel larger than some sites we have stayed on. The site has a lot of wildlife in and around it and quite often you can be visited by friendly ducks and squirrels. The only reason I have rated it down for families are the lack of toilet block, showers, play area and laundry. For us, this is not an issue and probably makes the site more appealing as it is never overrun. The nearby town of Bovey Tracey is lovely with some independent shops and a Coop and Tesco Express. There is also a large Coop at Trago Mills, a 5 minute drive away. Newton Abbott is a larger town with large Asda and usual shops /banks you would expect in most towns. Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Dartmouth are all less than an hour drive from here. We return here a few times over the season and even after only a couple of nights genuinely feel like we have had a break.

Wonderful site

This is our last day here. We have been extremely lucky to have had lovely warm weather, no rain at all. It's a good site with easy access from the A38, no single track roads. The site is kept in fine condition. The wardens are great. We didn't miss the toilet or shower block as we used our own bathroom. It quiet here just the birds singing and here at the far end of the site we count hear any road noise. Nice to see the ducks wandering round the vans and the squirrels in the trees. This is our 2nd visit of 9 nights and won't be the last. The dog loved it too because he was able to walk from the site into the HUGE STOVER COUNTRY Park.

Peaceful week at Stover

We had to postpone our arrival for two days due to the windy weather but on our arrival on the Sunday we were met by Kath with a smile and details of where we could pitch. Access to the site is easy off the main road into Newton Abbot. Leaving the site and turning right can be a bit of a challenge with a caravan as it is a busy road. We stayed for 8 days which, despite being near a main road was fairly quiet from traffic noise. The only thing that shattered the peace and quiet for us was that there is a clay-pigeon shooting range nearby and operates on a Thursday and Saturday with shooting going on for most of the day. Other than that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and we will return. For us the site was ideal, easy to access, good clean service points, no toilets or shower, but we have on-board facilities in our caravan. Lots of wildlife in and around the site, visiting mallard ducks, Grey Squirrels visiting the pitch, and lots of small birds flitting around visiting the bird feeders set up around the site. Tawny Owls calling at night too. There are no facilities for children on site but there is a lovely Country Park adjacent to the site. Although it was quite busy during our stay there was little if any noise coming from the park. There is a nicely stocked information room and Kath and her partner are on hand if you have any queries. Within 4 miles there are three major supermarkets, Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco and a little further out is Morrison's. Close by the site is Highbridge Caravans if you need some assistance with your van or have forgotten something. There is also a mobile engineer who will visit the site if you need one, even on a Saturday afternoon. All in all this is a site that we will return to for exploring more of south Devon and Dartmoor.

Peace and Quite

If you want to rest and relax amoungst the trees and parkland, with a nice golf club next to the site, a dense forest and huge lake 200 yards away with an abundance of wildlife, come to Stover It is a clean well maintained site, all pitches EHU, but no toilet or shower block, but who wants these when most modern caravans have been fiited out with showers and toilets. If this is what you're looking for, then this is the place for you - nice friendly Kath to greet you and her husband warden to help you settle in. Newton Abbot is just 4 miles away. Trago mills is 2 miles away and for caravan spares a dealer 'Highbridge Caravans' is close enough to walk to. Leave refreshed - we did 4 times this year!¬

An Ok Site

Having been members for over 26 years we've stayed on fair few of the clubs sites. I wouldn't say for us this is a returnable site...mainly because of the road noise which is why I've rated three for peace and quiet, if you are going here to relax and re-charge the road noise is a nuisance, and so is the Park noise, the Park is a busy place for families so you a hear a lot of people calling children and dogs etc. the Park is a lot smaller than expected, we were looking forward to maybe a Pembroke type park or like Cirencester where could walk among the trees and explore. We loved watching the cheeky squirrels and rabbits inches from our feet on site, and the call of the owls at night. A friendly clean site, wardens do their thing well.

Still a superb site

Stopped here again for a few days on the way back from Wales and I am pleased to say that the wardens are keeping the place as good as ever. Extremely helpful on check in when owing to an error on the club system I had two bookings for the same days. No trouble to sort and resolve all in a friendly and helpful. Sadly for members, this is the wardens final year as they are retiring, so my thanks to them for all the great years they have given the club. The site has a very nice dog walk beside a river, but this is surpassed by Stover Park which is located next to the site. Easy access on a wide footpath from the site, just enter the gate by the bus stop. The pitches nearest the road could be noisy, but overall the site is very quiet and tranquil.

Little Gem

We stopped over for just a couple nights mid week in August and were surprised how peaceful the site was. An ideal location for the beautiful Stover Country Park (just two minute walk away) and an ideal location for exploring Dartmoor and the Coastline. Fantastic site if you're after somewhere quiet and enjoy walking and nature. Simple, clean, well managed site with friendly helpful staff - perfect for a chance to wind down from the stresses of the day job!
