Our first trip as new caravanners

This is a great site. We are new to caravanning and it was a great experience for us. Nice large pitches. The wardens Sue and Brian were very helpful. Barnard Castle is a lovely town. We would recommend the chip shop called Number 149. The Bowes museum is well worth a visit and High Force waterfall is a must. Thanks. Bob and Jenny.

A great site!

This was our first visit to this site and what a little gem! We were slightly apprehensive about booking after reading some comments about the road noise but we selected a pitch down the dip for our Motorhome at the far side of the toilet block overlooking the treetops and it was perfect! Level, quiet pitch with easy access to the toilet block. TV reception was 'ok' and walk into Barnard Castle was really quite pleasant, although up hill on the return for those less fit/mobile. The town is fab with lots of shoos, cafes, pubs and boutiques, as well as the Castle to visit and lovely river walks. We will definitely return!! (Even though the club prices seem quite expensive now £80+ for 2 nights stay - and that's both being members & 1 of us a concession!)

Final trip of 2021

We visited this excellent site again for 7 nights on a serviced pitch and once more enjoyed the location and facilities. The wardens maintain the site and its facilities to an excellent standard. The location, 1/2 mile from Barnard Castle and in the beautiful Tees valley make this a wonderful destination. The extension of the site with a further 10 fully serviced pitches and 10 standard pitches will further increase its popularity in 2022 and we shall have no hesitation in returning.

Wardens

Just wanted to thank friendly wardens Chris and Carol who were absolutely brilliant and helped us get through a situation last week when we had problem with our caravan which resulted in needing a recovery back home. Chris and Carol were both very knowledgeable and helpful and are an absolute credit to the Caravan Club. Thank You !

A great site in a wonderful area

We spent a great 4 nights at this site and loved every minute. Having read reviews that mentioned building noise from the site being extended, we chose a pitch at the other end of the site, and it was perfectly quiet. We walked into Barnard Castle via the woods, a lovely way to access the town and not muddy when we were there. We’ve been to Barnard Castle before and really like all the independent shops and friendly vibe. On the day when it was blowing a westerly gale, we caught the 95 bus to Middleton in Teesdale from outside the site (you just flag it down) and walked back via the Teesdale Way, a wonderful varied walk, partly on the banks of the Tees and partly up on the hills above it. Halfway back we had a great lunch at the Coach House in Eggleston. The other two days were fine, dry and sunny – and still – so perfect for cycling. One day we retraced the bus route via the pretty villages to Middleton where we can recommend the Tees Pot café – very friendly staff and customers, had lunch and stocked up on cakes for the way back, on the slightly busier B road back to base via Eggleston. The last day we ventured north of the site, to the Hamsterley Forest, a hillier ride but with magnificent long views in all directions. There’s plenty of parking in the Forest and bike hire – we saw lots of families enjoying the trails on foot and on bikes, and for the more adventurous (ie not us!) there are loads of challenging mountain bike trails. Ours are hybrid bikes and we kept to the well surfaced main ‘Forest Drive’. So with so much to do in the area on foot and 2 wheels, we’ll definitely be back before too long, and look forward to stocking up again on local produce at the excellent Mainsgill Farm shop on the A66 between Scotch Corner and the site – look out for the resident camels!!

No peace for the campers (at least if you're near the building work)

A reasonable site, and reasonably well located if you want to walk into the town of Barnard Castle to get your eyes tested or just to visit the castle. A word (or two) of warning though. The walk along the busy road can be quite dangerous due to a very narrow path and the alternative walk through the forest can be.... muddy. Very muddy. There used to be a large meadow here at the site that was an enviable dog walk area, but this is currently being transformed into extra hardstanding pitches. There doesn’t appear to be a replacement planned, which is disappointing. The work on the new site commences at 0700 and goes on until 1800, so expect a full day of noise if you chose a pitch nearby.

One of the best

This caravan park is a first class site .clean and tidy and although the dog walk meadow is closed whilst the alterations are being done its a great place for dog owners . The wardens are helpfull when required and a low profile when they are not. The pitches are good but a bit noisy near the road. If I had to nit pick in the pot washing area they have supplied a paper towel dispenser I assume to wipe down the sinks after use but no waste bin to put the paper in after . Its a nice walk into barnard castle whether through the wood or via the road its a pity the pavement isn't all the way down the road though. So take a torch. Few years ago a mobile chip shop used to come to the site on Sat evenings its a shame that's no more because it was brilliant. All in all I'd recommend this site
