Back to nature

This is our second visit here , this time instead of grass we were on a hard standing ,( ***Tip The hard standings are HARD , make sure you bring rock pins to secure your awning ***) but just as enjoyable The pitch was well drained , had to be , a couple of torrential rain storms passed through . With the forest a few steps away , the site is ideally placed for walking solo or with your dog , and our young dog had the time of her life sprinting around , and I had some much need exercise , bringing my blood pressure down significantly. A real testament to the calming atmosphere if the site . Nearby in the forest were sloe bushes so we now have enough sloes for 3 or 4 ltr sloe gin . As said before , very friendly and helpful wardens. An added bonus was the USAF on exercise and a night time display of a rarely seen Osprey VTOL aircraft with its illuminated rotor discs looking like an UFO passing over, never have my camera to hand when I need it !! Had to dock one point of peace and quiet on account of a pair of noisy families who seem unable to converse at normal levels and keep their dogs under control. Shame And there STILL members who think the dogs on a lead rule does not apply to them. Visited 25/29 September

Sixth stop of our September tour one night 26th September

After a change in our direction for our tour this year and going to The Sandringham Estate we could not come home without a memory lane trip back to Thetford. We spent two weeks here when we had our caravan in 2013 and loved the site and had a wonderful holiday! A few changes since then security barrier and a change of access for the grass pitches near the storage facility no walking offsite by there as before and an updated reception. The wardens were lovely and welcoming. We arrived about 4pm after an on route visit to the brilliant RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Good walks off site and interesting info on the Desert Rats and some amazing aircraft overhead! Well recommended site!

Heaven..

We went here mid September and really needed a complete break and rest with peace and quiet. We could not have chosen a more perfect site. Even as you just drive a short distance down the forest road and enter the site you feel at peace straight away. It is pretty and welcoming, we wanted a grass pitch and had three areas we could choose from. Within 20 minutes we had pitched up, cup of tea and were surrounded by squirrels playing up and down the trees - although we drew the line when one tentatively poke its nose through the open door!! Everywhere was clean and tidy, and unlike many sites that state walks from the site, this one really did - there were several gates leading direct into the forest, and although the same forest each time (obviously!) each one meant you could go a slightly different route for a walk. The wardens were very friendly and helpful. My only disappoint was to find out that the site would be closing for the winter - I would dearly have loved to have come back in the frost! We will definitely be visiting again.

Thetford Foest idyll

This is the fourth time staying here and it’s just a wonderful non facilities site to stay at. The wardens were not only efficient but friendly and informative. Since our last visit there are now security barriers installed. If your a bird watcher there are plenty of sites with in a 15 mile radius.

Peaceful

Fantastic site for a relaxing break perfect for walks and if you have dogs it’s ideal. trails through the woods if it’s hot plenty of shade and the bonus of seeing deer close up and also watching them come on site early in mornings from the forest also rabbits.Birds singing really back to nature..Very quite site not much to do for children as no play area but there are acres of wood to explore and make dens .ideal spot for days out. staff very friendly lots of advice when needed can’t fault them very helpful.Even when nearly full it’s quite so if you want to relax unwind can’t think of anywhere better get a book and chill out. No toilet or shower block so have to have your own

We said we'd be back

They say the proof is in the eating, and for the second weekend in succession we spent nights here. This being where The Desert Rats trained, on the Sunday there was a special commemoration of the 75 years since the Normandy Landings, old vehicles and tanks, jeeps whatever, lindy-hop, stalls selling memorabilia, a parade and service of thanks and commemoration. There is an annual commemoration here and you might like to put it in the diary for next year. I spoke before about the excellence of this site and do not intend to repeat myself, all was confirmed this time too. There is a trough herb garden, members are invited to help themselves if desired and as we were leaving I exchanged the suggestion, very much tongue in cheek, that it would be good to have a vegetable garden too!! Well a man can dream.

We'll be back

Just spent 3 nights here and what a super place it is. Quiet if you exclude the birdsong and the identified and unidentified sounds of the forest. We had a hard standing and most seemed to be level. We spent Saturday in Thetford and visited the Dad's Army Museum whilst there and what fun that is if you are of a certain disposition with several characters from the program wandering about. No visit to the area, for us, is complete without at least one lunch in Browns at the roundabout on the main road at Mundford. This site as others have said is ideal for walkers and cyclists alike and it is a good approximation to dog-heaven if you are a dog owner. On day 2 we walked amongst much else the Desert Rats walk, reading the information boards as we went, learnt a lot and felt some pangs of pride and gratitude. Back to the site, very clean and the staff are really helpful and friendly without being at all intrusive....just the right mix for us. In addition to much else that we saw including a Muntjac deer wandering through the site one evening we also photographed our first Painted Lady butterfly of the year finally here after a long migration from Africa.

An excellent weekend

Just returned from a wet weekend at the thetford forest club site, a lovely site for a peaceful few days away. The site as stated has no shower facilities which did not bother us, hard standings are very level, and you will need rock pegs to put up an awning. Mainly couples with dogs on this visit. Great for walking the dogs through the forestland the surrounding areas including the desert rats memorial on the approach road to the site. We will go back again, hoping the weather will be kinder to us next time.
