A lovely open site with fell views but you need a car to get around

Troutbeck Head CAMC A lovely open site with views of the surrounding hills. The serviced pitches don’t have any views as there is a big bank in front and behind them. Wardens were happy for us to pitch either way round so we were able to pitch nose in to make the most of the views. Pitched on no 56 ( big grassy area behind us. ) near the activity centre and with some of the best views. Some muffled shooting noises at the weekend but my dog slept outside without it disturbing him. There was a short time when the quad bikes were training some distance away before going off for a longer ride. Didn’t feel any of these noises were intrusive or unusual in the countryside. Nearest pub Troutbeck Inn is walking distance but along an A road with no pavement, so we did not get around to trying it. You can walk off the site from the end of the serviced pitches through the dog walk, on to wide tracks through forestry commission land but it’s a very long walk to get anywhere. So you really need a car here. Pub at Dockray - the Royal is a short ( 5 min)drive with Ullswater a little further on. We walked part of the old railway line ( very accessible as tarmac all the way) from Threlkeld to Keswick ( only half way and back due to knee injury!) We went twice to the brilliant dog friendly cafe at Threlkeld with excellent coffee and cakes and fell views. Another day we walked the other end of the railway path from Keswick. Keswick is lovely but busy and has a farmers market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Very dog friendly, so expect to encounter a lot of dogs! You can walk from Keswick along footpaths next to Derwent water. It’s worth a drive to Buttermere as it’s a beautiful lake and only 4 miles to walk around it. A couple of nice dog friendly cafes in Buttermere village for after your walk.
