pleasant stay at Uttoxeter

Just returned from a very pleasant 3 night stay. We deliberately chose to stay when there was a race meeting (but no evening events). We are not really interested in racing (except via Dick Francis novels) but just fancied the experience of seeing a racecourse in action. You can obtain different tickets for going into the various stands/enclosures on race day from the site reception. But you can see a lot of what is going on from the site itself as you are pitched i the middle of the track - which is what we did. From the site you can hear the announcements etc so you know what is going on. We did find it really interesting - seeing build up, the racing, and the departure of outside broadcast and huge TV screen lorries. Site not quiet on race days - obviously, but was on other days. Uttoxeter itself is quite interesting with a good little museum - Redfern's Cottage - outlining history of the town and its industries, including JCB. Do not go expecting a normal cloned Club site. Facilities adequate, & very clean - but racecourse (who own the site) could do with putting a bit of investment into the site. Roadways on the site have a few potholes - but absolutely no worse than approaches to many CLs. Beware 2 levels of electricity - 10 & 16 amp, dependent on pitch. Wardens helpful & friendly. We would visit again if in that area.
