Two night stop on our way to Suffolk, just off the A1 with some road noise. Narrow approach road but with passing places with care. Allocated a pitch on arrival with £10.00 deposit on barrier card. Great site if you are a fisherman, so ignore the good reviews if you are not! Half the site is lodges around the fishing lake, the rest looked like seasonal pitches. The site access roads and pitches were constructed of a very sharp gravel and glass which will chew your flip flops into shreds after a couple of days. Poor dog refused to walk on the roads after a day.
Lots of insects and wasps as the bins were not emptied during our two day stay. The farm at the end of the site road also had two rubbish burning fires during our visit and we are still trying to get rid of the smell from our van. Limited toilets blocks in need of a deep clean and not just a loo roll top up.
The site was very disappointing and not worthy as an affiliated site. We tried to leave at 0830 but had to wait for the staff to let us out at 0900 or lose the barrier deposit. What a shame as we will not visit again even for an overnight stop,
Perfect
Just spent 9 nights here. a very peaceful and well kept site. Excellent fishing in the visitors only lake, the site and facilities are spotless and there is a nice dog walk around the perimeter of the site. Sue, the manager is an absolute delight and so helpful. we also liked the more relaxed feeling about the place unlike some club owned sites ?
It is a little remote so make sure you take all you need although the site shop has a good selection of basics and other things including fishing tackle and bait. If you do need to get supplies then Grantham is only a 20 minute drive away.
We can't recommend this site enough and will be returning in the near future for sure.
Thank you to all at Wagtail who made our stay so enjoyable.
Fantastic site for adults
Pretty site, well maintained with good clean showers and toilets. Ideal for fishing with a well stocked lake and lakeside pitches. Visited Belton house just 10 mins away which is one of the best National Trust properties. Great farm shop on way to Belton with lovely cafe and pick your own strawberries.
Ramada hotel on Toll bar road offers a good swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi for £10 a day or £20 a week. Just mention you are staying at Wagtail. They also have a range of treatments. Again ideal for adults. Will definitely visit again.
Well maintained site with a few drawbacks
We visited this site midweek for four nights in June. It is large, clean and well maintained. A team of grounds staff was always busy. There is a mix of tourer pitches and large static cabins. A large central fishing lake is surrounded by an immaculate green with ducks, coots and geese which are quite unfazed by humans and we were fortunate to see several young broods close up. A group of ducks adopted us and visited our pitch daily for some food ignoring our terriers.
The site is quiet. Although less than a mile from the A1 it has a feeling of isolation. There are only limited footpaths in the immediate area, a bit disappointing as we like walking our dogs. After walking round a nearby field boundary we happened on a track. Within a minute we were met by a woman and told (politely) it was a private road so had to make our way back over stubbly field boundaries again. Unsettling for me, just up the track, a full size model skeleton swung from a tree by a rope. Weird.
The toilet/shower and other facilities are very good with a small laundry in the main toilet block. Car access to the site is by a barrier and a card is needed (£10 deposit). A handy dog walk surrounds part of the site. Sadly, at least one owner did not clean up after their dog so care was needed.
One significant concern is the surface used for the roadways. It is sharp gravel with bits of pottery and glass. Walking in my Crocs, I got a small sliver of flint in my sock that almost penetrated my foot and one of our dogs became lame after a day. He then refused to walk on that surface though would do so on the grass areas. Clearly he found it uncomfortable. He recovered quickly after we left.
While the site itself is lovely, the warden was excellent and it is ideal for trips to Grantham and lovely Newark, the limited nearby footpath access and road surface means that we won't return.
Back again!
We have returned again, I love this site. It is so peaceful and quiet, I can just sit here and drink it in all day.
Yes it is a bit of a drive to the nearest shops but I don’t care, the people are really friendly and helpful. They have just started having a fish and chips van visiting, we have all enjoyed our portions. We enjoy our trips into Grantham and we both enjoyed our visit to the market at Melton Mowbray. We will return again
Beautiful site
Cant book through the caravan club online but on contacting the site direct they allocate you a pitch themselves (we asked for a map to be emailed to us first so we could look at the layout and request a pitch number) - on arrival was allocated the pitch next to our chosen one but was fine. Its a shame all sites don't just let you choose on arrival where you wish to pitch like most caravan club sites do - its just as easy for the owners to run with pitch numbers/keys .
Anyway back to the site, it is beautifully laid out with lots of pitches overlooking the water. Lots of good lighting (we went in nov so this was important as dark 5pm). Lots of nice touches with uplighters and benches make it pretty. Pitch sizes brilliant 10 x 10mtrs on all and all have border of shrubs between, little extras like that go along way to making it a lovely site. Wet rooms were clean and warm and nice showers. Although think in busy months, the toilet ratio may be stretched with 2 of the 3 toilets in the wet room block being in the wet rooms. There is a 2nd shower toilet block on the other side with 3 seperate showers and 3 toilets.
The dog walk on site is lovely and many longer lovely walks in surrounding area too did a good circular one from marston/houghton 7 miles.
Will definately return really lovely site .

Get booking confirmation in writing!!!
Booked one night here by telephone call. Drove down from Scotland only to be told they had no booking for us. Make sure they confirm in writing so they same doesn't happen to you.
Very nice site
Very clean, very tidy, warm welcome and good facilities.
Had a very pleasant stress-free long weekend
5 days in Lincolnshire
The site overall is smart, clean and tidy and the staff were friendly and helpful. The toilet blocks are modern (block to rear of the site) and have good finish and facilities. (however the tap in the gents cubicle was a little like the tap version of Arkwrights till... you never knew if it would dribble or give a full force supply when you pushed the button!) All other facilities drinking water taps, waste points etc were well maintained.
I would recommend the site for adults without hesitation, however children are not catered for. On the down side we couldn't get good TV reception at all while we were there even though the site boasts the reception as good. The shop had very little supplies and the gravel used all over the site for roads, walkways and pitches is a little annoying continually crunching under foot and tyre! (also there seemed to be a lot of re-used broken crockery in the gravel which was a cause for concern with regards to possible cuts etc)
Would I visit the site again, yes I would!
Nice site
Stayed Friday 17th until Sunday 19th Feb
Nice welcome when arrived on site
Pitches are a good size
We had lakeside pitch & fished on the Saturday....£6 for 1 rod
Kids loved the wildlife... and feeding them, and the walks around the site
Facilities clean all weekend
Will definitely visit again
