Uninspiring car park has so much to offer

On arrival I was disappointed by my first sight of the campsite that looks like a large uninspiring car park, without the feel good factor you get on some of the other CAMC sites. But then things started to change: 1. A very warm welcome by the lovely staff; 2. The usual high quality facilities and cleanliness that you get on CAMC sites; 3. The great location which is quiet and peaceful and yet just a short walk from the centre of York, which is the very reason we came here; 4. Then we discovered the Rowntree park just beside the campsite - great for walking, cycling, children etc. 5. And the bonus was out of the back gate of the campsite, you will find Bishopthorpe Road - a small buzzing community of shops and restaurants right on your doorstep - the icing on the cake. This campsite has so much to offer - we will definitely be back to have more time here to better enjoy all the opportunities.

WALK FROM YOUR PITCH

Some folk have said this site is a bit like a car park but do not be put off by this. With mature hedges between many pitches and lots of trees bordering Rowntree Park there is a pleasant outlook. Obviously busy as you would expect on arrival but the warden was genuinely welcoming and helpful. Even if you are not a great walker the route into York and all this wonderful city has to offer is not outfacing as it is all on the level. Top tip if you are thinking of visiting the iconic Bettys tea rooms we set off walking from our pitch at 8.30am and arrived at Bettys 15 minutes later and 5th in the queue for opening time at 9am. After a full day enjoying the city a stroll from the site to the Millenium Bridge is a relaxing end to the day. Kayaks on the river and a fox walking by made an interesting walk. We were pleasantly surprised how quiet the site was at night.

YORK AUGUST 2023

Very busy little site - not particularly attractive but VERY convenient for York. Large pitches with hedges around the majority which gives you a degree of privacy. Facilities immaculate and wardens are friendly and helpful.

Convenient location but pricey stay

As frequent visitors to the Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Rowntree Park in York, we find ourselves drawn to its excellent location and proximity to the city. However, our recent last-minute booking for a one-night stay left us with mixed feelings. Undoubtedly, the site's biggest selling point is its convenience. Situated close to the heart of York, it provides easy access to the city's charming attractions, historical landmarks, and bustling streets. The park's serene setting amidst nature offers a peaceful respite after a day of exploration. Regrettably, the price for a one-night stay came as quite a shock. At £56, we found it to be rather expensive. While we understand the value of prime locations, we believe that the Caravan and Motorhome Club should re-evaluate their pricing strategy. Such costs can add up quickly, especially for those who prefer spontaneous getaways or shorter stays. On a more positive note, the facilities on the site were well-maintained, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The clean amenities, reliable electric hook-ups, and water supply were appreciated, as they contributed to a pleasant camping experience. We hope that in the future, the club will consider providing its loyal members with greater discounts at this and similar sites. A more budget-friendly approach could make it more accessible for enthusiasts like us to continue enjoying the benefits of membership without worrying about steep fees. In conclusion, the Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Rowntree Park in York remains a preferred destination due to its convenient location and well-kept facilities. However, we cannot overlook the rather hefty price for a one-night stay, which we believe merits a reassessment by the club. For now, we'll still return to this site for its convenience, but we hope to see more member-friendly pricing options in the future.

Just an average club site.

Stayed for 4 nights beginning of July. Saw a lot of "rave" reviews about the site but in all honesty just a standard club site, nothing special. The pitches are large but the positioning posts are such in the corner making it very difficult to position the motorhome. The pitch directly opposite was in use so very tight, so much so that when leaving there was not enough leeway and the side of the van was damaged after scraping the hedges. Speaking of hedges these were very untidy and had not been trimmed resulting in either scratching yourself when hooking up, the alternative being walking into the next pitches personal space. Very little grassed areas which made the site look more like a car park. A small problem which was mentioned to the warden I think was dealt with but I'm not sure as I had no feedback from him. If you need anything from reception it needs to be early morning or afternoon as it is closed most of the time. The only good thing about the site is it's location to the city.

Great location!

Great location for access to York. Easy to use site, although tricky filling MH with water, need a longer hose! Facilities were lovely and clean. Staff very helpful. We would have tried out the cycle route however our bikes were stolen from York city centre, take note if you are cycling in to city. We will be back…with new bikes!

Fantastic

We are complete beginners to this, and I must admit I was a bit nervous about hiring a motorhome and then driving it into York...but getting here was easy, and the welcome we had on site was brilliant. Thank you to the wardens (sorry, I'm no good at names), you guys are doing a great job and helped make our visit really enjoyable. We will be back!

NO SITE SHOP HERE

No longer a shop on site - apparently wardens have to pay for their own insurance etc now - another Club cost cutting measure which disadvantages Members. Shame - but my next Club Site (Hawes) has as fully stocked Shop - well done them! Yes there's a good variety of local shops nearby, but a long walk if it's wet!

Great site

We've been coming to this site for many years because of it's convenience to York and being close to areas of the Yorkshire Moors and Dales. The site itself is more than adequate for us, and the staff, new this year, were as helpful as they could be when needed. There are perennial problems though, not confined to this site I might add. Many people continue to arrive too early (hooray! turned away by the wardens), many people decided 5 mph was too low a limit and, out of site of the wardens decided that 15-20 mph was more suitable, ( and I include MH, caravan outfits and cyclists!), and a number of MH members determined it was a better idea to ignore the one way system when trying to approach the Mh waste disposal point ( the wardens know about this). Other than these points, it was quite a pleasant stay, though the wifi, if you needed it, was only available if you stood by or in the toilet block! We have booked again for this time next year, but it might be the last time we book for as long because the cost of staying has risen significantly, a complaint made my many people offering reviews this year.

Great site and perfect for York sightseeing

Great site and friendly welcome, the wardens couldn’t have been more helpful. Plenty to see and do, good bus routes if you don’t want to move your outfit. City is within easy walking distance. Spotless facilities, nearby pub and local shops accessible from the back gate of the site. The early arrival brigade were out in force again on my day of arrival, the queue just after 1pm was long and completely blocked the approach road. Quite a few had arrived by 12:50. It mattered because the people trying to get out before 1pm from the park next to the site (12 cars) couldn’t get through. A few of us did manage to back up sufficiently to leave the narrowest part of the road clear but they still had to wait for a dozen or so units to clear the entrance. It really is about time the club took action against early arrivals, there is absolutely no need.
