Well done wardens re. early arrivals

I would endorse previous comments about the site and its location. In addition, from our pitch we had a front seat view of the entrance barrier and how the wardens dealt with people trying to beat the 1pm arrival time. I do wonder why a strict adheral to the arrival time is necessary at some sites but it is essential here because of the narrowness of the approach roads to the site and the club makes this clear in the information about the site so there is really no excuses for people who try and arrive before 1pm. We watched a unit arrive at 12.40pm and were made by the wardens to go back out of the site. Somebody else arrived at 12.50pm by which time the wardens sensibly decided that it would be too difficult to make the people leave the site ( which involves going round half the site on the one way system ) in the time left to 1pm but they made the people concerned wait at the barrier until 1pm before allowing them in. So well done wardens for the way they dealt with what can often be an awkward situation. For the benefit of dog owners, note that the adjacent Rowntree Park is a pleasant area for dog walks but dogs must be on leads and the park gates do not open until 8am. The closing time varies but seems to be after dark; when we were at the site ( April 17th to 20th ) the gates closed at 10pm which was well after dark. You can gain access to the park via a gate at the back of the site but you must take with you the key you receive on arrival to unlock and lock the gate. If you are on one of the pitches near the front of the site as we were, it is easier to go out of the main suite entrance and walk along the riverside track to the park car park and enter the park there.

First big trip in our Moby

Fantastic site to visit York. Lovely, clean campsite on the lovely River Ouse. Easy access to the city. Excellent instructions (via the club) to get to the campsite Thank you for making our first excursion a memorable one!! We booked for 5 nights, but 3 would have been enough.

Great site for visiting York

Returned again to York Rowntree, most I’ve ever paid this time, but it’s an easy walk in to the centre and the car can stay where it is, so no parking fees, bus tickets or taxis required. Lovely facilities as always.

Location

Brilliant location for visiting York. Yes it was expensive but no hassle of having to park, chain up bikes, work out public transport etc. For a city centre site it was quiet and peaceful.

Great site but now way overpriced !

Visited this site a few times and found the site well laid out with friendly staff and great facilities. Only a short walk into town. I would have liked to see the book in time earlier than 1pm as half the day has gone by then, 11am would have been much better as that gives you more time in York. The first time we went the price was reasonable for a city site £37 but it has now gone up to £58 for members ! Will not be visiting again and to be honest if prices are going up this much we will be cancelling our membership. Shame as it is a great site but there is others near by at more than half the price.

central location

We stayed here for a second time and love the location in the centre of York. It is expensive compared to others which are relatively close to York but the convenience is worth it in our opinion and so peaceful which is surprising given the location. Follow the instructions in the handbook to reach the site not satnav

Fantastic location, but at a price

We've been regular visitors to York, using Rowntree Park as our base since becoming members over 8 years ago, but unfortunately this will probably be one of our last visits due to the prohibitive high nightly costs of the site especially when there are at least two alternatives further down the road for almost half the price, even taking in the cost of bus/taxi travel to the town centre if required

Disappointed

We've visit this site several times a year and are aware of the site rules and arrival time. We arrived 20 minutes early and were told we couldn't wait in the usual arrival area. We were told to leave the site and park in the park and ride car park. When we returned at 1pm, there were several vehicles in the waiting area. We were then told our new vehicle was too big for the site, it is 29cm too big. We had updated our details through head office and the app was upto date. The warden was quite abrupt and said he'd let us on this time but this would be our last stay, we pointed out we'd be to this site only a few weeks early with the same vehicle and no one told us the vehicle was too big. The warden said the reason was because a child had been killed on site, when I went online, the accident was caused by a towing vehicle and not a Motorhome. That night we noticed 3 other vehicles on site which exceeded the size limit, one vehicle was bigger than ours. We asked for a late departure as it would be our last time at the site, the answer was no. During our stay, we noticed the wardens pointing towards our vehicle as they drove past, and as we packed away on our departure day, a warden went behind our van to reposition the wooden stake, but we hadn't hit it. It felt as if we were being intimated. If we had known the arrival area was not to be used, then we could have avoided the first problem. If we were told our vehicle exceeded the site limit, we could have avoided the second problem. Instead our holiday was ruined. We will no longer be able to visit that site.

fantastic stay near the centre of York

We've just got back from a 3 night stay at Rowntree Park. This was a bit of a last minute change of plan due to the snow forecast, so we decided to stay somewhere a little closer to home and a little less 'out-in-the-wilds'. This was our first stay at this site and will definitely stay again. Arrived and was greeted by a friendly and helpful warden, who gave us a helpful plan of the site. The site is quite compact with about 100 pitches, the pitches are a decent size although I can imagine longer units and caravans might find it a bit tight in places. There are lots of hedges between pitches that give some degree of privacy which is good. The pitches seem flat, tidy and the whole site is well maintained. The one-way system is bit convoluted but it does mean you have to drive right round the site to reach the motorhome service point but you can use this time to view and choose your pitch. Due to the location, the access roads are a bit tight, so its needs some care driving through the local streets. There is nowhere really to wait just prior to accessing the site so you do need to plan to arrive after 1pm as stated on the booking information. The shower/toilet block is excellent, very clean and in a very good condition and although the site was full when we were there, it never felt too busy or overcrowded. The other facilities incl, MSP, CEP, dishwashing area, and information point were also excellent, very clean and tidy and perfectly maintained. Only slight negative comment is the absence of free wi-fi across the site, something I think should be included in the price. The site, is obviously popular due to its close proximity to the city centre, only about a 15 minutes walk in, there is also a lovely walk along the river and to the local park. A nice touch is a pedestrian gate at the back of the site allowing easy access to a local parade of shops, bars and cafes - so we didn't always feel the need to go into town. We'd never really considered using our motorhome for a 'city break' but this was ideal, and we look forward to returning soon.
