Not 5-star pitches

We spent just over a week here at the beginning of June after booking through the Club. We found the directions given in the 2016 CCAMC handbook misleading and took several goes before we took the bull by the horns and ventured down quite a narrow street entrance in Les Mages. We later discovered an exit off the Ales ring road which would have been less stressful and we used this route for our departure. We rejected the allocated pitch since it was on the small side, rutted and contained sawn off tree stumps which may have got in the way of pitching the awning. We walked downhill to reception and were given a number of alternatives which were available for the duration of our stay. We also asked about the apparent lack of service points for water and waste and were advised that they could be found at ground level. On choosing a pitch we found these beneath a covering of soil and other debris. Their maintenance guy later came to sort out the necessary connections. All that aside, we found the facilities very clean, staff to be friendly and helpful, indoor and outdoor pools very good. We didn't get to use restaurant or snack bar, but did order bread from the well stocked shop. We didn't care for the number of cats that wandered around the site and through our pitch. We had to shoo them away on a number of occasions and we noticed a distinct 'catty' smell. We spotted cat food scattered on steps in the nearby village which had obviously been put out for them. Reception advised that the site does not encourage them but they cannot stop them wandering. The surrounding countryside is very pretty and picturesque so worth exploring. Our favourite was Barjac, about 20 minutes away and the Friday market was excellent, as well as several restaurants and shops. After a far from satisfactory start, despite the favourable points, we are unlikely to stay here again since we now prefer smaller, owner-managed sites.
