Probably a good location, below average facilities

We only stayed 1 night and it rained pretty much all the time. The location appears good for visiting the Loire valley, but perhaps not a lot to come ‘home’ to. Toilet blocks and showers grubby and slippery and not a lot of care seems to be given which means us campers probably don’t clean our bit either so it leads to a general grubby feel. Motorhome service point and chemical toilet could do with being a bit further away from some pitches as the traffic tends to build up and a few odd smells we can all do without. Having said that pitches are flat and location a real positive, just recognise a bit of compromise needed when it comes to showering etc.

Delightful site

Lovely site in a great location. The pitches are spacious, albeit oddly-shaped in places. The staff are friendly and helpful. Fresh bread can be ordered daily. The on-site restaurant is excellent, although booking is a must as it is also popular with locals and can get really busy. Perfect base for exploring the Cher and Loire valleys. Amboise is a particular gem of a destination. The only slight downside is the toilet blocks which are a bit rudimentary. Toilet paper has to be collected from a dispenser on the way in and there is no soap for hand washing. There is, however, plenty of hot water.

Good location, facilities a bit tired

We arrived on the Friday of the Whitsun BH weekend, but rang before to check there were pitches available, which we were assured there were. On arrival check-in was a little slow; we had the impression the young lady checking us in was fairly new to the job and being trained up. The previous English owners have left, and it seems so have some of the English customers who we have seen on the site on our 2 previous visits. The site certainly was never full over the BH weekend, nor at any time during our 5 night stay. We were told to choose a pitch and come back to reception. Plenty to pick from, there are no chalets at all on the site, there are only touring pitches. There are 2 toilet blocks, which appear a bit tired now. Only used the main block, which was clean. Showers were quite hot, as was the water for washing up. Toilet paper is on a huge dispenser at the entrance to the block, not in each cubicle. There is a hairdryer in the ladies'. Pitches varied a bit in size, most have some shade, the pitches directly by the river Cher appeared rather on the small side; there are quite a few people who use the site as an overnight stop. Bread etc can be ordered at reception for the following day. There is a pool, which was a bit chilly when we were there, but very welcome as we had some hot weather. There is also a restaurant, which is open to people from outside the site, but we didn't try it this time; it has a good reputation. On our first night there was some sort of disco from across the river, presumably from the campsite which is more or less opposite this one. This site itself has musical entertainment on Saturdays, finishing at 10pm. There are good cycle routes directly from the campsite along the river Cher. There are some waymarked routes as well. We cycled a long way in each direction, and also to Amboise, by following part of a waymarked route and a different route back. And of course there is Chenonceaux very close to the site; we didn't visit as we've visited before, but the view of it from the riverpath is lovely. We enjoyed our stay here very much, had intended to stay just 3 nights but extended it to 5. The site was quiet during our stay, apart from the first 2 evenings as mentioned above, there was no evening entertainment at all and no noise. The site accepts the ACSI discount card during the off-peak season.

New Owners and a Different vibe

We have stayed here many times over the years and used it as both a stopover and a longer stay site as the site is very relaxing and in a convenient location. I was surprised to see a sign saying that the site was full at the entrance, this was not strictly true but it was pretty full, something I had not seen before. This was our first visit since John and Sarah sold to the new French owners and were looking forward to seeing what changes had been made. To be honest nothing much has changed except for the introduction of a first class restaurant . On arrival we were advised to book for the Restaurant which we did as it was an easy option. The food was great and fairly priced. The Restaurant was full, even locals attended which meant some campers were turned away. The site used to be predominately British with around 85% and around 10% Dutch with a smattering of other Nationalities. It was very noticeable that there were less Brits and lots of French on the site as well as other nationalities , which was nice to see. Whilst the staff in Reception spoke good English the male bar staff did not and made no real effort to do so and were even sullen, this frustrated a Spaniard and Dutchman so it is not just a Brit thing. For an International site I would have expected basic English. Although it was not a great issue as everyone managed to get by in Pidgeon French. A smile goes a long way and sadly was not to be found on the faces of the male staff in the Bar, just felt they could have been more welcoming. There has not been any obvious investment made on the site and it is desperately needs updating, particularly the toilet blocks and electricity supply. Having said that everything is clean and functional, however, whilst I had a hot shower every time my wife endured a cold shower every time! The pool was cloudy for the first couple of days but was rectified afterwards. The site is conveniently situated for Chenonceaux Chateau and the towns of Amboise with its fabulous Sunday morning market and Loches with its Wednesday market. The Zoo at Beauval is well worth a visit and is without doubt the best one I have visited.

Perfect location by the river Cher for exploring Chenonceaux

Great site for exploring the Loire. Don’t forget your bikes! Handy to get to Chenonceaux castle. As we’d visited before this time we hired a boat from the other side of the river from the campsite. Pool great - if a bit fresh!! We ate at restaurant on site - very popular and food good though mussels dissapointingly small. Staff mostly very helpful but the odd one needs yo work on his customer manners!! Facilities kept very clean. Stayed two nights.

Nice site but needs a facelift.

Welcome on arrival. Very good Good flat level pitch on grassy area close to amenities and good size. Good view of the site and near to the river Cher FACILITIES Toilet and shower block- these were the same as I remembered 4 years ago. Clean and maintained but need upgrading Washing up area- as above . Lots of hot water and kept clean but a lot of “chips” on the draining areas. Laundry area.- as per the washing up Fresh water- easily available Waste water- drains around the toilet blocks but not easy to empty grey waste from our waste containers. Okay if you have a bucket Chemical waste.- available at the rear of the toilet blocks Bar- bar not used but was available and lots of people using it Restaurant- seemed to be very popular. Basic menu but we felt that the prices were a bit steep Pool- not used but it certainly looked cleaner than last time we were here. Entertainment- no entertainment LOCATION Supermarkets- an excellent Leclerc Supermarket near Amboise some 12 miles away but a very good Intermarche at Blere 3 miles away. Aldi at Blere was overpriced and certainly limited choice. Attractions- Lots to see and do in the area. We had visited Chenonceau previously . Some pretty towns and villages with plenty of chateaus and vineyards. Great area for cycling and relatively flat. Large city of Tours not far away. Amboies is worth a visit as is Loches Petrol/diesel- at the local supermarkets This site is living on its past reputation. When we last visited I commented that it needed a facelift and money needed to be spent on upgrading facilities. Apparently, the new owners took over in April this year from the previous British owners. It is in a good location and perhaps the nesw owners should be given a chance to see what they can do. I would recommend it but hopefully new the owners will give it a new lease of life. 3 star is probably the right rating at present.

Nice site but a bit tired

Lovely location by the river and close to plenty of chateaux and vineyards. Friendly and helpful staff, pitches fine. As mentioned, electricity supply and washrooms badly need investment.

Great site

We've visited a number of times over the last few years. This year we stopped over one night in early August and then for a week on the way back at the end of the month. It's a lovely personal site with much to do either walking or cycling from it. The river next to the site and Chenonceau a little further are easily accessible. Other chateaux are within reasonable driving distance and Tours can be accessed by train from the nearby station. The English owners create a friendly atmosphere and put on regular events with an inclusive meal and sometimes live music.

First class again

This was our second visit to Moulin Fort and we were not disappointed. We had booked a river pitch which was wonderful and had some shade which was essential as it was so hot during our 9 day stay. We had a mechanical problem with our motorhome which meant we had no water functioning on board. We had to use the site washrooms, something we do not usually do. They were wonderful. Clean, functional and hot. We were so pleased. We attended some of the site dinners which were wonderful. Its a great place to cycle from. We completed the 20 mile circular route a few times and it was super, stopping along the way for coffee and or wine tasting. We fully recommend Le Moulin Fort. We shall be booking again. If you are heading en route north or south, its a super location to break the journey.

5 night stay September

Stayed here for 5 nights first part of September-2 adults no children. Campsite easy to find and lovely riverside setting. We were lucky with a riverside pitch which appeared larger than other pitches elsewhere. Pitches are not clearly delineated and some are not so easy to access. Facilities were basic but adequate. They could do with updating but were kept nice and clean. Campsite only has 6 amp electricity and we were aware of others tripping their supply. There was the occasional train noise but it did not bother us. We didn't use the restaurant so can't comment on it. Staff friendly and helpful Campsite is ideally placed for visiting Chenoneaux and the Chateau as it is less than half an hours easy walk to access both. Other places we visited from there were Amboise and Chambord (slightly further away but well worth a visit). We enjoyed our stay here and all in all a good site as a base for visiting the area.

Response from the Site:

Many thanks for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your time at the site. We are not allowed to delineate the pitches due to the restrictions put on us by the local community in regards to flooding - as we are very lucky to be directly on the river if it floods we can have nothing that can collect the debris from the flood water -if there is a serious problem with electricity please speak to us at reception and we can try and help.
