Croatian Crossing
This story happened on: 11/09/2015
Despite our having recommended a night halt at Aquileia(in a previous thread), we pressed on and stopped at Sistiana (Camping Mare Pineta) which allowed us to travel along the E61 and into Croatia in time to catch the 12.45 ferry to Cres from Brestova to the island of Cres.
The road down to the ferry is very steep in places (8%) and we stayed in second gear all the way down. You join the queue on the hill and then buy your ticket from a kiosk. We paid 281 Kuna one –way but our campsite deducts the one-way ferry fare for 10 nights stay and both ways if you stop for 18 nights.
Waiting in the sunshine for the next ferry is no great hardship.
The ferry loading and unloading is very quick.
It's mostly motorhomes on this route.
The journey time is about 20 minutes.
Landing at Porozina, you have to negotiate your way past the vehicles waiting in the queue to board,
and then off up the hill hoping that nothing big comes the other way.
It’s the fourth time we’ve taken this crossing and each time we say we’ll take the ferry from Krk to Merag next time! That might be a wise choice for caravans and larger motorhomes. The views are spectacular as are the thousand foot drop-offs from the edge of the road.
The road improved
and eventually our destination was in sight, Cres and Camping Kovacine.
And here's the ever delightful Cres
