Alderstead Heath vs Crystal Palace as a gateway to London

This story happened on: 26/02/2015

Last time we needed to get into London we stayed at the Crystal Palace CC site, which was extremely convenient due to its location in South London. A ten minute walk across the park takes you to Crystal Palace station where there are regular train journeys on the Southern line into London Victoria. There are also buses that run regularly from stops outside the caravan site. Alternatively, if you fancy walking its only 11.5 miles to get into Hyde Park - we tried it, we know! The site is nestled away amongst busy surroundings and you could easily forget where you are.

Alderstead Heath, further south in Surrey, offers the same convenience but also an escape from the city into countryside. It is extremely popular with tourists, particularly in the summer. The site is larger and surrounded by country lanes and woodland (which are rumoured to contain large white snails!) There is a more family feel with playgrounds, a trim trail and plenty of space. A trip into London will require leaving from Coulsdon South; you can drive there and park in the car park for about £6 a day (but be warned there is a height restriction and not a lot of space) or get a taxi for £6 one way. Regular trains depart from Coulsdon South for London Victoria or London Bridge and the journey takes approximately half an hour.

Both sites offer easy access into London. Crystal Palace feels more central with a city buzz; getting there towing a caravan can be a hair raising experience, combatting the London traffic! It doesn't feel like the London attractions are very far away and they aren't; it just takes travelling time. The site is compact, convenient and very popular for good reason. On the other hand Alderstead Heath offers more space, country air and a more relaxed feel. I think the latter is ideal for people wanting the best of both worlds, those wishing to explore the surrounding area as well as occasional trips into London. Although it is convenient to get into London from Alderstead Heath it is not as convenient as Crystal Palace.
