Great site well positioned for Rutland Water

Rutland Caravan and Camping Site
A lovely well kept site, we had 2 weeks here in November, so it was lovely and quiet. The toilet/shower facilities were fabulous, with underfloor heating and space. We were well positioned to visit Rutland water and surrounding areas. The Plough pub, a short walk through the back of the site was a real find and we thoroughly enjoyed a bingo and quiz night and the food was FABULOUS... AND it was so dog friendly too. However, there are a few things that could be improved to make this site even better. 1. We were so excited to see that there was a swimming pool on site and booked here specifically for this. However, the cost was too prohibitive, £16 for half an hour (regardless of how many of you are swimming in your party, so for myself, or my husband it would have cost £32 as we can't leave our dog!!) VERY DISAPPOINTING. Why not offer an off peak fee? Or a sign up sheet so you could join others to reduce cost? We understand that the pool is used by many outside clubs/schools, but surely a 'reduced fee' for club users could have been offered? 2. Allowing you to drive around and select your own pitch - we've never had a pitch allocated to us on a club/affiliated site before. We would not have chosen where we were put, especially being there for 2 weeks. Most sites allow you to select your pitch then let the wardens know. I did question this and was met with a very defensive response, which tells me that this point has been obviously been raised before! 3. Considering the charges for this site, the entrance to the site is VERY poor with some very large pot holes...these really need to be addressed.

Great place to stay

Rutland Caravan and Camping Site
A very nice site to stay on. The showers & toilets are very clean. The wardens are very welcoming & helpful. A good dog walk which leads into the village of Greetham via a locked gate which you are given a key fob for. There are two pubs serving food. We had a really nice Sunday roast in The Plough Inn. There is a bus stop which goes to Oakham & another one to Melton Mowbray. Also on the site is The Rutland Kitchen open 6 days a week. The food is excellent & well worth a visit. Stayed 9-14 Sept 2023

Travelling North

Rutland Caravan and Camping Site
Nice stopover site, well laid out and managed. Friendly wardens and very clean facilities. Didn't use the swimming pool as we felt it was a bit expensive for a half hour slot. The farm next door was a bit little noisy at times and one night a thick smoke cloud descended upon the site. We walked into the village from the site, very sad that the local Post Office/Store has gone out of business but the pub does a takeaway service, which was handy and very reasonable.

Nice Site

Rutland Caravan and Camping Site
We spent 4 nights over the August Bank Holiday weekend here, overall very good, the Adult area of the park has an excellent facility block, very clean and warm and no problem with hot water at all. The site has great dog walking areas. Great location to the village where it is an easy walk to two very nice dog friendly pubs. We had a warm welcome from the park wardens and presented with plenty of local information. My only slightly negative observation was the occasional noise that could be heard from the adjacent farm type buildings that has squeaky conveyors running during part of the day. Also you need an extra long water hose to reach the service point from our pitch. We would return if needed to stay in the area.

Not for us

Rutland Caravan and Camping Site
A rather underwhelming welcome set the tone for our stay. The bathrooms are very fresh and clean and well tiled. Good hot water. This site has plenty of open space and when we arrived we were told to park on a pitch facing a weedy bank which was designed to nearly block the view of the intensive chicken farm bang next door. We asked if we could turn around for a different view and so make use of the service pitch which had cost extra, we were told flatly no! what ever side ones services were they required the door to face right all around the site for fire reasons, ( so we would have to reverse out)! We understand the 6 meter rule but have never come across this before. We explained our extensive pipes would not reach but no luck, they offered to sell us more. We didn’t bother. I then took our energetic dog for a walk in their large lovely wooded areas only to find notices everywhere saying dog must stay on leads. So I tried to get off site to with him and found even to leave on foot required the card to open the gate. Eventually I managed to get out and play ball with my dog on the village municipal field. As I walked around the perimeter of the site and farm on designated footpaths I found the general mess, old tires, broken boxes, machinery, and in one spot grain leaking out of the base of an old barn depressing. There was something smelly burning for most of our short stay, emanating from the chicken farm just meters away. Before we left passing reception my dog and I met a very nice man dressed in yellow work clothes, somewhat covered in very fresh blood ( not his) we said good morning but my dog refused a pat. Later on leaving the barrier descended on our motorhome, perhaps we were too slow. There were many reasons I didn’t feel comfortable at this site, I felt like a profit centre not a happy camper, but some people I met loved it.
