A little closer to home with a UK staycation

Glasgow

As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow offers not one but two Christmas markets to try out this festive season. They are just a few streets apart from one another in the city centre, so it makes getting around them very easy. The first, at St Enoch Square, runs from 9 November to 23 December, while the second, at George Square, is open from 25 November to 31 December. Both offer a wide selection of festive gifts, street food and a welcoming bar with a selection of beverages to warm visitors up on those cold winter days. For the ultimate Scottish winter retreat, combine with a stay at Strathclyde Park Country Park Club Site located just a 20 minute drive from Glasgow city centre. It’s far enough to escape the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers but close enough to easy access into the centre.

Kent

Possibly one of the most hidden winter secrets of the South East, Leeds Castle in Kent plays host to a Christmas market for four consecutive weekends throughout November and December. From 24 November, visitors can enjoy the lead up to Christmas with mulled wine, wooden chalets selling handmade Christmas gifts, reindeer, birds of prey shows and traditional fairground rides amidst the backdrop of the stunning Leeds Castle. Once deemed “the prettiest Castle in all of the world”, Leeds Castle is plenty of fun for the family to enjoy with its rich heritage and fun-filled maze to explore. For a great Southern getaway, why not stay at Bearsted Club Site which is only a 30 minute walk to Leeds Castle. Situated in the middle of open farmland amongst the Garden of England that is Kent, the Site also has a playground making it a great stop for children.

Located in Germany’s south west, Kleinenzhof is the perfect base for exploring the traditional German festivities in Stuttgart. Just under an hour’s drive from the site, Stuttgart welcomes over 3 million visitors each year to its markets and celebrations. With fairy lights on every corner of the town, the scent of cinnamon and villa along every street and the strong smells of freshly cooked bratwursts all set amongst the backdrop of the famous medieval castle, it is easy to see why so many people flock to one of Europe’s most beautiful markets each year. Austria

Possibly one of Austria’s prettiest spots, Salzburg is well-known around the world for its part in the Sound of Music. This winter this famous small Austrian city will be illuminated with its Christmas market as one of the world’s oldest Advent markets dating back to 1491. Held in the romantic Cathedral Square in the heart of the city, the market is a great place to pick up last minute handmade gifts, dine with locals and drink traditional Austrian beers amongst the mulled wine, of course. For those looking for more Austrian winter warmers, why not take a visit to Schloss Hellbrunn too, just 20 minute’s drive outside of the city. For the ultimate Austrian break, combine with a stay at Grubhof Site which offers panoramic alpine views from all corners. The site is great for winding down with a luxurious spa onsite, as well as a bar and games room to keep everyone entertained.
