Le Château des Marais
Not booked through the Club. Stayed 2 nights in September 2023. Seemed a convenient stop on our tour and was featured in the Club’s overseas site book. Quite a busy site, with temperatures in 30 degrees. Went to the takeaway as it opened up in the evening. Male staff member loading up a freezer with ice creams. Appeared distracted. Ordered burger and frites. Returned 15 mins later to collect and noticed that crepe hot plate was disgustingly filthy, old batter hanging off the sides and a large open tub of Nutella on the counter nearby. The frites were in a basket above the hot oil, not known if fresh. No other customers nearby.Very hot inside the large shed that formed the takeaway facility. Whilst waiting to collect the order the same staff member had continued to carry heavy packets from the main building into the facility. No sign of personal hygiene anywhere. We collected our food and deposited it immediately into a rubbish bin and made do for our meal. The pool area also looked grubby, water murky, and the footbath was empty. Wouldn’t return. Nearby municipal site looked a better bet.

Wish we had read the reviews

Le Château des Marais
For us, this site fell far short of its 5* rating. We had booked for 7 nights stay & were looking forward to all the facilities that the site advertised. However, we were met with disappointments from the start. On arrival we asked if we were near the facilities, but the receptionist advised us that the site was full & to change pitch would incur an additional fee. As this was an expensive site anyway, we accepted the pitch she gave us. Unfortunately, our pitch was in shade from overhead trees, the ground dusty, table & benches on our pitch covered in bird droppings, our shared serviced pitch was only just acceptable & behind us was the site’s ballpark. The ballpark was in use from morning until after midnight with balls pounding against metal frameworks & against the fence which divided us. Apart from the constant noise we had a football kicked over onto the car on 3 occasions & once when the car was in motion. There seemed to be no night-time security to enforce quiet from 11pm. so noise went unchallenged. The toilet & shower facilities were less than satisfactory with missing toilet seats, shortage of toilet paper, dirty walls & floors in showers, 1 mop between two shower blocks. These facilities were insufficient to meet the needs of the number of people on site. The restaurant, bar & take-away were expensive, with limited choices, so we did not use these. The pool & slides looked inviting but on closer inspection the pool needed cleaned above the water-line, also the foot bath leading to the pool was dirty and blocked. As the site opened to the public at weekends the area was crowded. We didn’t use this facility as a result. There was a wellness spa on- site but the prices were expensive, so we didn’t use these either. Rubbish & re-cycle area full & disgusting with piled rubbish, flies, wasps, broken glass etc. Some on-site roads narrow and busy with buggies, scooters/electric scooters, bikes, cars, motor homes & caravans. Pulling out from pitches onto these roads requires extreme caution. Our complaints to site staff were not addressed during our 7 day stay. This is not a site we would recommend. A nice municipal campsite is located nearby on the banks of the river Loire which we would use if we were to return to the area.

Worse site we have ever visited

Le Château des Marais
Looking forward to 7 nights at a 5 * site. What a disappointment nothing like the description in the CAMC. Our pitch was situated next to the ball park and car park. We asked to be moved but was told the site was full but at a push could find another pitch but would have to pay extra. This was already on top of a very high price. Where to begin dirty stained toilets and showers. Recycled area rubbish piled high with open bags, broken bottles and dirty nappies. The grassy pitches had not seen any grass in years. Nor had any maintenance for years. Still debris from previous occupants. The wooden tables on all pitches had been pushed aside as covered in pigeon and bird poo. Please note this site is open to day visitors at a charge of 6 euros. If the site was supposedly full why were day visitors allowed in to use the swimming pool facilities. The area around the pool was dirty. The walk in area to get into the pool area was blocked with debris hence dirty water. No one was monitoring these day visitors are site and the nearest toilet block to us was absolutely unusable at the end of the day. We has constant excessive noise from 8 in the morning until 23.45 from the ballpark. On numerous occasions ball's coming over the boundary fence hitting cars and caravans and my wife was actually hit by a football kicked out of the ball park onto the pedestrian and vehicle area. On speaking with reception pointing out the above issues together with photographic evidence we were offered a voucher for a pizza and was assured the points would be looked into and rectified. Five days later on our departure date the toilets and showers were still as bad as when we arrived. Altogether a very bad experience and one we will definitely not be repeating

Stop over

Le Château des Marais
We used this site twice this year as a stop over . A superb site with plenty of shade. The facilities were clean and the staff help full. The only comment is that with a large outfit, 7.97m caravan some of the access roads to the pitches are narrow and negotiating the junctions can be an issue. Great care is needed. Otherwise a definite for future trips to France as it is handy for the A10 motorway

Very poor choice - avoid!

Le Château des Marais

Is the standard of overseas sites similar to that of the UK? European sites are star-rated by local authorities and will have different standards and regulations to the UK. The Club's site inspectors ensure they are of a high standard for our members. Not on this site they didn’t! We booked the standard pitch and were given a small, rutted and untidy pitch at the end of a row of Eurocamp chalets, surrounded by others, and more or less underneath one of the tree cabins. The next door chalet was right up against the boundary and so very close to our caravan that we needed to keep the blinds shut on that side. The pitch seemed to be covered in charcoal and other rubbish. When we asked for another pitch we were told none were available and then, after we asked for a specific pitch in another line, we were told we could have it for an extra 10 euros per night. We were then also offered a choice of three other standard pitches that were worse and smaller than the one we had been allocated, so we reluctantly stayed where we were. We were also directly opposite the toilet block and playground, so noisy all day and evening. Washing machines in the block were regularly used (more noise) from 7am to late at night. There also didn’t seem to be much effort by the site management to stop rowdy teenagers late at night or ensure a peaceful stay. CAMC should make it clear in the booking process exactly what you are booking and where you are likely to be so that a true informed choice can be made. On a safety note, there was a speed limit of 10kph but the electric golf buggies used by the staff whizzed around much, much faster than that and took little care at junctions. Many small children were wandering around (unsupervised) by themselves and so it can be only a matter of time before a small child is mowed down by a buggy. Our advice – don’t use this site.

Response from the Club:

We are sorry you were not happy with your pitch. We advise our members to contact our Travel Service directly if they are not happy with their pitch and the campsite will not help. We will call the site directly. All French sites are star rated on a National level and health and security to European standards.
